Hi Asif
Regarding ur query on derivatives I am answering here as this is a better thread
Derivatives are security whose price are 'derived' on the basis of some other underlying security say the equity or an index or something else.
Derivatives in itself does not have any claim on the real asset like equity (share) has.
These are mere contracts that are traded on the same markets where equity is traded and hence its price is derived from these and hence the name derivatives.
There are two types of derivatives
futures and options
futures is a contract that has a maturity date where transction occurs on a future date at a pre determined price.
there is a long and short position of a contract and mostly position are coverdup before the maturity date.
long position is that u agree to buy the share at pre determined price on a future date.
short position is that u agree to sell the share at pre determined proce on a future date.
both of them put some marging money and each day amount is added or deducted from their margin depending on the price of the secuirity on subsequent trading days.
options are two types
call option
call options are where the writer of the option agrees to sell the share at a strike price even if the price in the cash segment is more than the strike price. So if the price is higher he gives u the difference in cash.
put options
put options are where the writer of the option agrees to buy the share at a strike price even if the price in the cash segment is less than the strike price. So if the price is lower he gives u the difference in cash.
no actuall delivery of shares takes place and ur contract expires on a maturity date.
these were first introduced on chicago stock exchange in 1970 i think and have become very popular.
These are used for tow things to hedge ur position and punters use it to speculate cos u have typicaly one mont duration (in indian market)
i think thats enough explaination.
read ET for fundas on companies.
I had posted few links in this thread much before u can see them too.

and NDTV is one good option if u r trying to invest for 1 year.
Thought i will simplify a little bit of derivatives explanation given by ace_bubble(name???)
Derivatives are financial instruments derived from existing instruments such as stocks.
The two main categories of derivatives often mentioned are FUTURES and OPTIONS.
OPTIONS:These are nothing but a contract to buy a stock at a specific price on a future date.We can buy an option to buy a stock at a specific price in the future for an upfront investment. So if we think reliance might touch 600/.....in 2005 jan,i will buy an option to get reliance stock at 550 in dec for a price of 100 rs for 10 shares. This 100 rs is non refundable investment. Now if reliance stock price goes down i always have the option of not opting to buy reliance share but i will loose the 100 / i have already invested.CALL and PUT are the type of options.
CALL is buynig an option while
PUT is selling an option.
FUTURES:This again is a contract to buy a stock at certain price in a future date for a specific price. There are short and long future positions which is nothing but like CALL and PUT.Long term future contract is buying future while short term future contract is for selling it.
The major difference between futures and options is in the fact that option gives you an option and not obligation to buy or sell a stock at a certain price. If u choose to forego ur option u will loose ur investment to buy the option. On the other hand futures is an obligation to buy a stock at a specific price in the future.Option is not an obligation. You can have an option to buy a future.
gud work dudes u guyz been truly helpfull.......but one doubt here in my mind arent derivatives the options executed only by the institutional investors ot big time investors?
do small (individual investors)have a chance here
Hey NTPC IPO hasn't still come in yet ...god knows whats the delay abt ? With raising crude are ppl going to loose more than expected. Any knowlege
Deccan Chronicle IPO on the way. Price band - (164- 192)
Any idea if it's worth applying ?
I've never tracked print and media industry ... so depends on others for suggestion.
Looking at the way the market is responding to IPOs I feel that it won't be difficult to get a return of 10% on DC.
Time to make this thread live 😃
My stocks re underperforming and i m starting to loose money...reason I m pretty scared of falls..so keep pulling out as soon as i make 0.5 % and try hold losses for 7% .....
Deccan Cronicle the paper sucks....I've been reading it for years...It had a healthy run as being leading newspaper in Hyd..people don't it tat much outside Hyderabad. With Times of India giving it a run I don't know if its gonna sustain . Also i\this papper is politically biased towards Congress and puts down heavily the non -congress entities in the state namely TDP and BJP.
If u wanna a buy this at highs of 180..i wld rather caution u ......
