dear vivek,
let me brief you about myself,
i am working as product developer in garment industry from last 8 years,
now i want change from garments to equity research,
last year i joined ICFAI MBA correspondance, now i have to select an elective from FIANCE OR INVESTMENT, i am confused to select from it, so please help me out?
i am sure you will tell me that ICFAI MBA will not help me out much, but still i was passionate to do MBA thats why i joined that.
Now want to change to equity research so what should i do, to get into this.
Tell you honestly its not only money, but growth is the major factor which attracts me to equity research, and in garments i dont forsee any personal growth.
So please dear help me out, what strategy should i follow now?

hii,
i'm a final year electronics engineering student from IIT kharagpur and as usual interested in IB. It's better if i can get into private equity or venture capital. But i feel i need some IB exp before it. I've read through(or going to take courses as audit from VGSOM) derivatives, merger aquisition analysis, corporate finance, risk management....
Though companies like goldman sachs, lehman bros., ML, JPMC american bank etc coms to the campus and recruit btechs as analysts...I would like to know what exactly they seek in a probable candidate.
In fact i would like to try for us or uk based posting as well
and in that case i'll chuck iima/b/c even if i get them through cat06
so guys ,specially those who r already working in IB,PE,VC, plzz help me to aquire the needed expertise towards a career in IB->PE,VC
is it possible to apply for cfa (aimr) now itself..?
and reference to books is very much welcome
by the way what ever i have read abt fin related thngs is not documented coz either i took them as audit or self reading
if possible plzz tell me some internationally creditable course or certification...something i can showoff in my goldman sachs etc interview or will help me get the shortlist
Did they come this time ... hahaha

Dear Niks...in today's times, there are so many "highly qualified" finance professionals around that you won't stand much chance in a core finance job. If you still want to make it to a hardcore finance job then my suggestion is that you complete some strong finance certification like CFA/FRM, else you don't stand much of a chance.
Think on these lines.
I've completed my finals in B.com ( banking & insurance) from Mumbai university. I have no certifications and have not done any courses in addition to my degree.I'm from Mumbai.I've had subjects like security analysis & portfolio management , central banking and financial analysis & reporting in my final year. I've also selected project reports on topics like credit risk management in banking and ALM in insurance. I've tried getting an industry view of Equity research and it seems hiring for interns is completely frozen ( a few are waiting for the union budget , but i guess this is an excuse).
Apart from reading about valuation ( Damodaran's books) , financial modeling (Finance 3.0 - Business & Finance Professional Education Network) and reading a few research reports what should i be doing ?
Anyone on this forum can give any advise for searching internships in small equity-research firms in Mumbai ?.
( i havn't tried cold calling, but this is on my mind if all else fails).
Right now i could probably use Facebook to ask questions, but i guess the replies would be to do NCFM modules and attempt CFA ICFAI/ AIMR. I've read the FA qusetions of the ICFAI syllabus, im using it for understanding a/c concepts (4shared - free file sharing and storage - share folder - My 4shared)
Long term wise i don't see myself at JBIMS or any IIM's because my acads and EC's are next to nothing ( 60% avg. kid). But how is MET , welingkar's and XIMR( mumbai) in terms of getting a internship in ER ?
I guess this a little too much , but i have a few more Q's. I hope to get some great advice , apart from the other replies in this thread. I apologise for not searching for answers to these questions elsewhere, but its really hard to read pg after pg of replies when u have little time.

Well the only thing that comes to my mind is to ask you first of all why you are interested in such jobs.
The main reason is that without a top rung MBA or CFA/CA/FRM/CAIA, you will find it nearly impossible in today's challenging times to get into a good top-tier investment bank in such a role. I have a few CVs of my friends/colleagues who have got good qualifications and yet are finding jobs without much success.
However if you are thoroughly determined, then understand few things clearly.
1. You will need to settle down in Mumbai for good so be prepared to leave your home town for good. The logic is plain and simple- the main business originates in Mumbai and all (yes- all) investment banks have headquartered themselves in Mumbai (Im talking about the front offices and not KPOs), so it just makes sense to be based out of Mumbai or else you will let go all the good opportunities that might have come your way were you in Mumbai.
2. You will have to start small. Forget about earning those legendary bonuses in the first 3-4 years of your career. Most of my friends who started in the front-office did not get paid big till the 3rd or 4th year of their work but yes, from thereon, once your name begins appearing on a research report, you will be recognized big time and get fabulous offers- but till then, its a long and an arduous battle.
3. Start sending your CV to a local broker for junior analyst positions since you dont have relevant experience. This is the surest way to land in a front-end role. You will get the task of meeting the management on behalf of the broker for whom you are working, you will get to attend conference calls and your knowledge will increase tremendously in the early years of your career. But yes, you will suffer a heartburn when you get your monthly pay because it will be inferior initially.
If you dont want to take this acid test and still want to be satisfied calling yourself an "equity research analyst", then join some KPO like Copal Partners, Aranca, Irevna, Progeon and satisfy your false sense of pride !
However if you are serious about a career in investment banking and being in the "front-end investment banking", then go ahead and challenge yourself- try doing these 3 steps in the next 3 months and tell me how it goes for you. Then I can guide you further.
Hope this helps.
