Equity Research job/entry level i banking jobs

helpmeplease Says
what is the hierarchy ?? i thought a person becomes associate after analyst

Well....this has been discussed a zillion times but I will discuss this once more.

In Investment Banking, the designations go typically in this fashion...

Junior Analyst=> Senior Analyst => Associate => Senior Associate=> AVP =>VP => Director => MD

In equity researh in particular, the designations go in this fashion...

Junior Research Associate/Associate => Senior Research Associate => Junior Analyst/Analyst => Senior Analyst => Head of Research/Director of Research => MD

Hope this makes things clearer ! Cheers !

hi tumtum sir

can a person joining as Research Assistant (i.e. basically back end job) move it to front end without doing MBA/CFA and purely on the basis on experience, i.e. after 5-7 yrs . Also provided that he/she performs brilliantly in his role.?

and r there analysts/AVP both for front end and back end or when one moves up in the hierarchy he/she automatically moves to the front office from the back end.

thanx in advance

I hope this thread helps me out.
I want to make a career in financial services domain. I'm a B.Com grad from Symbiosis Pune (5th best commerce college in india). I was the topper in college and 12th all over university. i've 85% in X and 91% in XII. I've a very good extra curricular profile as well. I worked wid a brokerage firm front end for 2 months and currently workin wid an MNC in corporate finance since last 6 months. If everything goes well, I'll be goin for an MBA in finance this year.
I've a few queries:-

  1. are b.com guys preferred in ER/IB jobs, if they dont have a CA degree
  2. if i do an MBA from a top rung institute, but not an established IIM, how bright are my chances of gettin a job in these fields.
  3. I wish to pursue CFA also, but planning to do it post MBA. how feasible is this idea?
If someone could answer my queries, that would be great.. Thanx in advance.

1) U are workin with a MNC in the profile of corporate finance...So already u are in sort of IB field... See being a bcom will not affect u negatively but being a CA will affect u positively... I hope u get the difference...
2) Do cfa simultaneously wit MBA... I m pretty confident u will be able to do it... Give level 1 in dec 10, level 2 in june 11...So MBA from top college (need not be IIMs) + CFA L 2 , will boost ur profile to the extent to land the job in IB.... Just try to find out the profiles of various fund managers in India... by surfing various AMC websites.... U will come to know only ABC thing is not correct... S P Jain, JBIMS are equally and i say equally good...but majority profiles are.. IIT + IIM/S P Jain/JBIMS or CA + IIM/S P Jain/JBIMS....from investment banking perspective, after IIM ABC... top colleges in Mumbai are preferred...

Hi guys , i ll be glad if anyone could tell me whether this idea of mine is sensible.
Well, I am B.Com grad (74.4% from a top college in chennai) wanting to get into ER. I am planning to give CFA L1 this dec and work simultaneously. The reason for choosing CFA at this point is that I could work and expect to benefit from the exposure . And then after 5 yrs or so I would go for an MBA from a top rung institute.
Pls guide me on this.

Also, i want to know if it's possible to get an analyst job (even in a small firm ) after L2.

Dear All,

I would like to warn everbody that if you dont want to ruin your career, please do not join KPO organisations like Irevna. You won't get any value addition in a KPO setup and such organisations are so selfish that they might not even bother to deteriorate your career at their own profit making objectives.

Hi All,

I am CFA level 1. Currently I am having 8 year of IT experience which is mainly in IB domain. What are the prospects of getting better opportuinity in Financial/IT sector after completing CFA level 1. I heard getting into Equity Research is relave easy if I want to move to finance sector. Pls do reply

Hi,

Its a good job. I would certainly suggest to consider it seriously. Have u asked them about ur job profile?

Recently, NSE has launched an Equity Research Course.
Link is: NSE - NCFM Registration Form

Can anyone tell me how useful this course would be for someone who wants to become a Research Analyst?

Hey guys!

I was working in WNS in one of the process called Ameriprise(sister concern of American express). I am also preparing for mba entrance, after disastrous performance in season 2009.

Now I have got offer from Capgemini for Hedge fund process. There my job profile wud be abt gathering information hedge funds from fund managers via emails or calls. I wanted to get into financial research and analysis industry.

Now I m into dilemma whether to accept this offer not or wait till Dec 10 exam. Please reply ASAP.

Hi Tumtum,

Well, i m an engineering graduate with PG from CDAC & currently reaaly looking forward to get into Financial domain. I have been working in an IT Industry in BFSI Domain for past 4.7 yrs. I want to know that whether i can make a shift from IT to Finance , by clearing FRM/PRM certification ?. I mean, do i need an experience in Finance or an IT experience is ok ?.. And, what are the job prospects and kind of packages offered with the Engineer + PRM/FRM background ?...

I have registered for FRM L1 in Nov 2010.
Please do pour in some guidance & suggestion from your wide knowledge base.

Bharat.

Experience in finance is a must- IT experience wont count towards FRM so reconsider doing FRM till u actually get into a proper finance job.

Otherwise even if you will clear FRM, you wont be able to use the degree after your name, which is not what you would want to happen.

It is for this reason that I have mentioned time and again in many posts that one should not do degrees like CFA/FRM to get into IBanking. Rather if one gets into IB/Finance jobs, then these degres should be studied to further one's career.

Hope this helps.
Cheers !

Thanks for your reply, but I have got my Experience validated by GARP People & I can get Charter once I pass L1 & L2.

To bring in your notice, I have come to know that Engineering Stream + FRM is the best combo in Risk Management profiles, which you can later mould in to IB or Equity Research or Portfolio Management , after working in Finance for sometime as there are opportunities available for Risk Management Profiles in AMC's as well.

Reply from GARP

Dear Bharat,

Should you register and pass both FRM Part I and Part II exams, you would meet the professional experience requirements for certification.

Hey Tumtum,

What about those who are not getting it into IB. so this means, is it a waste to go ahead and get these qualifications. I am planning to pursue CWA and CMT. So, if i am not getting a job, I will not get it even after pursuing these qualifications.
Please throw some light on this. Also, please read this post to know more about me and my tryst with life - http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/frustrated-and-i-need-some-inspiration-advice-25049509
