Equity Research job/entry level i banking jobs

Hi ABCLICKS,

That was pretty helpful...Thank You!

You have cleared most of my doubts...just wanted you to ask you for one more favour..if you could put around a few more interview questions they could ask?....would prepare on those lines

puys.. i want some advice..
here goes my profile..
graduation: economics.. DU.. 79.5% till date.. currently in final yr..
class 12 :
class 10:
recently i got placed in a financial advisory firm through the university placements... the company is very young, around 2yrs old.. i am very confused about the profile they are offering.. the company is into designing portfolios for HNIz and other market players. the work assigned to me is to market the customized portfolios developed by their research team. the company will also sponsor some certifications from sebi and irda(names not mentioned oin the offer letter). i was told by the interviewee that this job will offer me a quality experience in the field of finance as well as marketing.. salary will be around 18000-25000 pm(depending upon the incentives)..
now i am super confused about the profile.. as in will this profile be considered good enough at the iims??
PS : though i have preferred finance in most of the forms(b schoolz) that i'v filled this yr, i am still not sure between finance and marketing..

puyss plzzz plzzz plzzz reply.. plzz help me out..

Okay... I will tell from my experience. In my interview, I was asked basic questions regarding how to read annual reports, what are the parts of Annual Report of Company etc. As earlier I was working in Audit Firm, they asked some financial information regarding Companies of which we had done Statutory Audit. Not in detail though. While one of my senior needed to draft a research report regarding a particular company in around 1-1.30 hrs. Yes they provide him with internet connection to compile data.

The Brokerage also recruited from MBA institutes, where they shortlisted some guys and then Every candidate was given one company of his choice among Sensex 30 Companies and asked to compile the information and then they were asked questions on that particular company. But that was a detailed interview.

So I think, u may have got an idea. Read at least one research report on all 30 Companies which constitute Sensex, and that will be enough. Of course, take a look at one or two Annual Reports and make sure you are comfortable with them. :-P

They wont ask u high funda questions on, Black-Scholes or CAPM etcetra... The interview will be mostly on Practical Knowledge.

Buddy , U r in the last year of ur CA  Only one advice, please concentrate on CA Final, clear it . Entire Finance world will be open for you, the day you become one. Make sure in the last lap of CA, your 100% attention is on CA. No NCFM , nothing. U will get many opportunities in this field once u complete the degree.

Well KPO is out the box for making a good career,,,,,,,as a PO you may stick for a longer time into retail, and moving to trade finance, treasury, forex could be difficult....so better way you try to find jobs in these fields in banks......there is one other way to get into your choice of field if you can join any Audit Firm(only those audit firm which are into bank audits),you can get a vast knowledge in each field....by the time you can apply to those banks where you did audit or even others as you got work ex...they may prefer you directly as you were working there.......

Well doing MBA,you try directly for these fields in banks, you may get a chance or the above option can definitely help you to reach the ultimate goal...

hii,

I have appeared for CA Final, now awaiting for results,,I want to pursue my career in IB....I have no knowledge abt this field....I searched in google where i found a site "http://www.analytics.net.in/index.html"

This site gives a short term course in Investment banking....I need an overview of this field...

Can you plz advice how do I proceed...

Thanx in advance......

Sorry for the late reply.
I am not sure what you are trying to ask.
If it is about the quality of job, the profile seems decent. But it is more of a Sales based profile than a Finance one. So just watch for it in case you are fully focussed on Finance.
If you are confused about Finance & Marketing, you need to do proper research and talk to as many people as you can to get a fair amount of information in order to judge without experiencing it.

If you are thinking that after a sales job you will not get admission into MBA Finance and vice versa then you are wrong as most of the people who do MBA do it after different sorts of work x like IT then MBA Finance.

You also need to evaluate available options before you make any decision

I came across a quiz on Equity Research on Finitiatives' website. It's designed to give you a mock interview in the field of Equity Research, Investment Banking etc.

CIMA (UK) enjoys a strong reputation and is actively pursued by many CAs/ICWAs in India.

Frankly, CMA doesn't have that big a reputation in India but is a good qualification nevertheless.

thanks tumtum for the quick reply..
is CIMA recognized by indian companies or by American companies' indian subsdiaries recognize CIMA or do they demand CMA only? Also, for European companies, which they prefer cima or cma?

CIMA provides the ACMA/FCMA designation on passing the course exams and fulfilling work criteria and it has linkages with most of the national management accounting bodies worldwide.

It is actively pursued by many CAs/ICWAs in India to whom it grants exemptions in some of its exams. As a result, CIMA as an institute has a lot of recognition globally.

Secondly it is of late positioning itself as a more of "strategic finance" degree rather than a core cost accounting degree and hence it has managed to position itself as one of the leaders in this area of study.

On the other hand, IMA (the US body granting CMA designation) does have ties with SMAC (Society of Management Accountants of Canada) and a few other countries but they are limited in nature and hence the course does not have that great a recognition when compared to the ACMA from CIMA.

But neverthless, I would reiterate, that CMA is also an equally tough and respected degree.

There are so many examples of American companies recruiting both CMA and ACMA (passed from CIMA). I think you should go ahead and register for any of the courses- but in terms of more recognition, it is definitely CIMA.

Hope I have cleared your doubts. Feel free to ask if you have any more doubts.

thanks Tumtum for the explaination..i m more clear now..

You want me to be frank? Then here is the answer- they are indeed just another way to get the money out of the poor aspirants.

You can never be "taught" equity research, you can only learn it.
Similarly, you can never be tutored "analytical skills"- either you develop it or you dont have it.

Frankly, 1 year in a brokerage firm will teach you a zillion times more than what these courses can teach you. And that education wont have any certification but will stay with you for life.

Now you decide whats worth and whats not.

Hope this helps. Cheers !
