Financial Risk Manager [FRM] by GARP

Hi everybody,
I hve been tracking this forum for the past few week, i m planning to appear in this 07 FRM exams. Thanks to this forum, i been very easy to access the study notes of Schweser.

However, going through the notes, i have covered Quant and VaR, must admit that Schweser is just 'Scratching the Surface' of these topics, there is absolutely no depth, for instance monte carlo simulation, simulating stock prices the stochastic differential equation has not at all been explained, somebody without prior knowledge of Stochastic calculus, under which Geometric Brownian Motion falls, would not be able to make up what is goining on.

to cut the story short, just want guidance from you guys whether Schweser would be sufficient. b'caz i have serious doubts.

Hope to hear from you all

Regards

well buddy...as for Schweser vs Core Readings, if u have time...definitely go thro the core readings.especially Credit Risk and Operational Risk...very useful.
as for passing only on Schweser, it possible.its been done...but u'd be supplementing ur chances by reading the core material surely.

thanks buddy

hi puys..

I talked to the Laxmi copy center guy in Mumbai regarding the material needed for the FRM exam. He suggested the following:

1. Buy Schweser notes + Jorian Handbook 4th edition: said that most ppl buy this combo
(Rs. 1500 + 700 + delivery charges)
OR

2. Buy core readings only (Rs. 1500 + delivery charges)

Could someone please tell me what material to buy (i.e. what will suffice) for the November exam??

TIA!!

Arey bhai, Im sunk neckdeep into loads of work and dont know whether I will be able to finish off schweser notes itself or not and what I see here is that it is being discussed that Schweser is not enough!

Tumtum,
Same is the case here. Last fortnight has been so hectic, did not get to see any FRM study material. Iam yet to complete first volume of Schweser. Whatever I had studied too would have gone down the drain...Nothing under my control....
As days pass by, gets a bit scary...

Shankar.

Hi Tumtum! I have read most of the posts in this topic, but I'm still unable to make my mind, despite your good explanations on CFA or FRM.

Please read my profile and advise.
I'm a B.Tech.(Computers and IT) with 2yrs exp. in swaps & derivatives (mainly forex and interest rate), with a large Indian conglomerate. I did register for CFA L1 (Jun 07) but cancelled it. I also plan to do an MBA (Fin.) from a good B-school, in a year or two. What would you advise me to do at this point? I want to be employed in hedge funds/inv. banking/derivatives, in that order after the MBA.

Others also welcome to advise, I'm in a dilemma.

After all the explanation in the previous posts, I can only say this.

If I were you, I would go for FRM vis-a-vis the CFA considering the profile.
All my posts contain the explanation in vivid details !
Perhaps if you are so confused, then you should continue with CFA only.

Hey there....there are no doubts people have cracked FRM by studying Schweser notes...
If there is a time crunch, schweser and FRM handbook perhaps can do the needful...only thing is schweser sometimes leaves u in the air...for which core readings provides a sigh of relief. Core reading is always worth a look for those wishing to get a better idea.

Has anyone touched Portfolio Management(Second last main topic in Schweser and Book 5 core reading). Anyone looking forward pls beware. Picking up Schweser is a waste of time for that. Its simply indecipherable.
I brushed past the Core Reading but found it to be too verbose and descriptive. Would take a month to go through it. Dont see much RoI in going through the Core Reading full.
Any clues how to go doing about this topic for the people who have?

I am thinking about registering for FRM this year, and this excellent forum has only increased my resolve. Haven't registered yet but would do so before 31 Aug.

Tumtum your posts has really been great and I am waiting for further updates from you. How far have you reached.

I got my hand on Handbook(4th edition) a month back and have gone through first few chapters. Once I have gone through the Credit Risk and operational risk, I would get to know where I stand vis a vis this exam.

I personally did nto find it that bad my friend. I think your background to a great extent defines how much you are comfortable with a topic or not. But yes, if you can go for a combo of Schweser + Core readings, the better it will be for you ! All the best reading !

Thanks dude ! I am halfway through VaR and hope to complete it by this weekend. After this, I will begin with Credit Risk.
hi... just found the link to download the latest FRM books at Kprofessionals: A Knowledge Professionals Community :: Professional Education :: FRM books
hope it helps!
shweta

Thanks a ton Shweta. The link has been immensely useful ! Take care and study well !

Hey there.. Bionic turtle provides free sample video on frm modules. The one on quant and var is interesting. Also u guys can check for stuff on emule. Cheers. All the best.

Hi guys ! Hope all is fine with you ppl.
I had a slack day at work y'day....kaafi aaram wala din thaa and I made the most of itby voraciously reading the Schweser's material!
Now I am on the verge of completing the VaR part and with it my portion on Market Risk Measurement and Management (MRMM) will be complete.
Is tarah tukdon pe pal ke zinda hai meri prep for the exam ! I am sure you people must be much better off!! On second thoughts, VaR is a section that you guys must go through carefully as it carries a lot of weight in the exam too. Be sure to read up a lot of matter when it comes to Methods of VaR and their advantages/disadvantages and that sort of stuff. These guys may ask a lot of conceptual questions on these and if you are not thorough, then you could take a beating. Rest of it is pretty straightforward but can't be taken lightly. I will come out with a list of chapters that I liked and those that I did not like (from Schweser's) once I complete my last chapter.
Till then, please keep studying and if you have any clarifications, please PM me for sure ! Take care and regards to all !
Hedge Fund Section
Has anyone gone through it? I cant find Schweser material understandable enough. Its regular Schweser standard half baked explanations with critical lines missing in between texts ....Anyway the problem is that I cant find Core Reading chapters for it too from the notes I got from Lakshmi Xerox. Am I missing something here? Also the notes do not include the chapter on Style drifts by Moix. Is it the same with all your copies too?

A bit of advice. Schweser has given Risk Management and Investment Management (Core Reading Book 5 material) as part of Book 2 (which I think is just because of the sake of fitting everything in 3 damn equally sized looking books ??:). Just screw Schweser sequence and stick to the one as given in Core Reading and keep tha section as the last.
Credit Risk
I am starting Credit Risk section. Tumtum and Ryan have gone through this I suppose. Would highly appreciate suggestions and learnings from ones who have already gone through it. Is schweser good enough for it and can Core Reading be used just as a reference or it needs a start to end read like Hull did?
The chapter on Securitization is missing from the copy from Laxmi Xerox for now.

Hey guys, does anybody know of a place from where we can get sample papers.
I mean not just old exam questions but actually old exam paper in proper format to try it out.

Also, any suggestion how much does legal and operational risk part has changed to make old question on them irrelevant?

hey all,
