Good news for the candidates whose rank is between 3000-5000. Defence institute of advanced technology (DIAT) Pune has released its notification. They have 75 seats for Ece people in core Ece subject plus a separate branch of sensor technology/laser and electro optics. A total of approximately 100 seats. This is a good option for those who get non-top NITs like NIT Nagpur,Bhopal. Here, you will have real time equipments at your disposal and you can enjoy the subject. The professors here are mainly retired people from DRDO,ISRO and IITs. Though placements are not that great but 50% of students get absorbed to different Government sector, working in the field of defence and space. The advertisements are out. Max age limit 26 yrs. If your score is between 500-600, you should give it a try rather than going to some NIT.

I have called IIT Madras.. They told me to upload screen shot of the result..but if by mistakenly you have uploaded the gate admit card that will be also okay..and research proposal is mandatory for applying ms in electrical Dept ..that is vlsi,signal processing..they told me write anything like what you want to do in iit madras and your interest of research

Giving options to various institutes is very very important. If you donot do it wisely, you will lose money as well as time
I will discuss the scopes versus your rank
1) AIR 1-10 ------------- any IIT/IISc VLSI
2) AIR below 50 ------------- IIT Madras VLSI
3) AIR within 25 or 30---------- IIT Bombay VLSI
4) GATE 'score' >800 ---------(Interview call from IITK or IITD for VLSI )
5) GATE Score> 950 ---------- direct admission to VLSI iit delhi
above statistic is solely for general candidates ... For OBC it is 2.5 or 3 times the general category ranks... In IIT Madras AIR 700 (SC) is their in VLSI (to the best of my knowledge)
You can expect VLSI in NIT Trichy/Suratkal/Calicut/warangal if you have AIR 300-500 (GEN) ... best being Trichy VLSI> Suratkal> warangal= calicut
as i told earlier OBC candidates multiply a factor of 3 with these figures and check1
So VLSI is tough to get in iits. It have the maximum placements among all specializations as of now
Whichever institutes you appy, follow this order 1)VLSI or electronic systems 2)Communication systems 3) Signal processing 4) Control Instrumentation 5) RF microwave 6)photonics.

Upto AIR 750 get interview call for Texas Instruments sponsered MS program in VLSI at iit madras
normal interview call for MS in VLSI is I think below AIR 1500
beside top IIts , VLSI in IITH, IITBBS, IITGn , IIT Indore are also good
those who have rank in 2000 to 4000, try for good government college (DTU, etc), or can apply to VTU, BITS, etc (you have chance for interview call)
IIT Bombay offer 3 year M.Tech courses also and those who have AIR ----------------------------------------PART-3--------------------------------------
Communication Systems Engineering : This is the next option. All IITs and IISc have this stream. My friend with 54 AIR is now their in communication systems in IISc . Closing rank will be within 60 AIR.
In IIT Madras ( I am a student here in communication), the AIR in my batch are 93,96,167,100,135,380(obc),401(obc) , 4 sponsered candidates (ISRO+drdo+Army) ...... so the last rank in this stream as of now is 401 !
if you have a gate score >760, then you are likely to get intrview call from iitd, iitk
In IIT Kharagpur , My friend with AIR 204 got communication in 3rd round, .so closing rank is around 220-240(GEN) ..please note!
IIT kharagpur OBC quota will reach upto AIR 450(possibly)
SC and ST might reach 1500 also (for sure)

AIR below 2000 are likely to be called from IIT Madras for MS interviews in communication. It is a good program, but the duration can extend to 2+ years. Choosing guide is also important. ( if somebody wants any help in choosing a faculty , just message me). During interview at IIT madras, concentrate more on probability, DSP, computer networks... waitage for probability will be >70% ..
AIR within 900 can get a seat in some top NITs.... My friend with AIR 1100(obc) is their in NIT Suratkal
if your rank is > 2500, you have chances during spot round in NITs, or go for good govt colleges .!
One major thing to be mentioned, please note....... If you are physically handicapped/VH, do apply to TOP IITs as well as TOP NITs, 90% you will get, if you have a rank within 10,000...
------------Signal Processing-----------
I dont know much about the statistic. But one of my friend got admission to NIT Calicut with a rank of 4750(obc) in 2011.
Many NITs have the process called internal sliding (read ccmt brochure) . so if you get rank more than 4000, then a wise decision would be applying to inter-disciplinary branches like industrial engg. etc in NITs, yo will get it for sure, and during spot round do an internal sliding to whichever core branch that have vacancy.. Many people do this and i know guys with rank 5000 getting admitted to NITs by doing this .....COOL
IIST is also offering Signal processing and you need AIRI dont know about I I I T cutoffs

This is more or less related to Electrical as well as instrumentation guys, but ECE chaps can also opt it. IIT Madras closing rank is AIR 18(Instrumantation/GEN), 100(instrumentation/obc).
If you have a rank within 250(GEN) and 450(obc), you are likely to get Control and Computing @ IIT Bombay.. y friend with AIR 240(ECE/GEN) is their at iitb
You will get IIt Kharagpur with a rank well below 400(GEN), 600(obc)
my friend with AIR 582(obc) is now their in IITG
----------------RF & Microwave ------------
This branch is their in IIT kharagpur, IITK, IITR ,IITD. The placement chances in India is very very less. If you have a passion to research, it is ok.. else choosing RF is a bad decision.
With AIR Interview calls from IITK/IITR if your rank is Please note, If your intention is to get a good placement , NIT Trichy/suratkal/calicut VLSI is far better than IITKGP RFµwave

PHOTONICS
IIT madras as well as iit delhi have these courses. in fact delhi have applied optics as well as optoelectronics over and above this. I dodnot know iitd statistics. but iitm is having 10 seats for photonics, in which 4 seats are only filled in every year ( means 6 vacant seats after all allotments ).. so if you get a call from iit madras for spot admission in photonics (& if you are interested) , you are likely to get it.
HOW TO GIVE OPTIONS??
Always give options to only those specializations which are core to our stream. That is the safe side. with your rank of say 2000, you are likely to get Clinical engg. in iit madras/ bioinformatics at kharagpur iit, but unless otherwise you are too much interested , dont do that !!!
means doing a VLSI course from NIT Rourkela or Nagpur or bhopal is better than doing bioinformatics from kgp (personnel view). One thing I forgot earlier to say;********** ie NIT bhopal is having very good placemets in all streams for last 3 yrs. please see their brochure********
Special note: In many iits once you get a branch you are supposed to sent the scorecard . so choose the options wisely !! , getting back a submitted card is difficult! ...
one more thing , if you are alloted a branch in n th allotment, then you have for options 1) Accept and upgrade 2) Accept and freeze 3) Reject and upgrade 4)Reject and Quit
in 1) and 2) you need to sent your score card and will be considered in all furthur allotments
in 3) you dont need to submit the score card but,you will be considered only after (n+2)th allotment for upgradation !!!!! TAKE CARE
NITs also follow the above policy... so choose wisely
