Hi ,
I need an advice.
I have completed some chapters from Powerscore CR bible & nw planning to start some practice from OG - 12.I have to plan my schedule for the same.
So, can someone , who has completed OG , or is doing it pls tell me what should be my study plan ?
I am planning to practice for alteast 2 weeks from OG ( all the sections ),
then will solve one of the mock test ( probably from mba.com) to see where do I stand....
So , can someone pls tell me , hw many questions should I practice in a day ( I can spend 2 hrs a day for GMAT prep on working days & 4-5 hrs on sats & sundays)..
Which of the following statements, if true, most strengthens the authors claim that there are far fewer children available for adoption than there are people who want to adopt?
(A) The number of couples waiting to adopt has increased significantly in the last decade.
(B) The number of adoptions in the current year is greater than the number of adoptions in any preceding year.
(C) The number of adoptions in a year is approximately equal to the number of children available for adoption in that period.
(D) People who seek to adopt children often go through a long process of interviews and investigation by adoption agencies.
(E) People who seek to adopt children generally make very good parents.
Corporate Officer: Last year was an unusually poor one for our chemical division, which has traditionally contributed about 60 percent of the corporations profits. It is therefore encouraging that there is the following evidence that the pharmaceutical division is growing stronger: it contributed 45 percent of the corporations profits, up from 20 percent the previous year.
On the basis of the facts stated, which of the following is the best critique of the evidence presented above?
(A) The increase in the pharmaceutical divisions contribution to corporation profits could have resulted largely from the introduction of single, important new product.
(B) In multidivisional corporations that have pharmaceutical divisions, over half of the corporations profits usually come from the pharmaceuticals.
(C) The percentage of the corporations profits attributable to the pharmaceutical division could have increased even if that divisions performance had not improved.
(D) The information cited does not make it possible to determine whether the 20 percent share of profits cited was itself an improvement over the year before.
(E) The information cited does not make it possible to compare the performance of the chemical and pharmaceutical divisions in of the percent of total profits attributable to each.

There are far fewer children available for adoption than there are people who want to adopt. Two million couples are currently waiting to adopt, but in 1982, the last year for which figures exist, there were only some 50,000 adoptions.

(A) The number of couples waiting to adopt has increased significantly in the last decade.
(B) The number of adoptions in the current year is greater than the number of adoptions in any preceding year.-----here the adoptions are compared, doesn't convey anything bout children
(C) The number of adoptions in a year is approximately equal to the number of children available for adoption in that period.------no picture about fewer children available.
(D) People who seek to adopt children often go through a long process of interviews and investigation by adoption agencies.-----irrelavant

I would go for option (C) in this actually. It is the only one I feel which (if true) really weakens the argument.

There are far fewer children available for adoption than there are people who want to adopt. Two million couples are currently waiting to adopt, but in 1982, the last year for which figures exist, there were only some 50,000 adoptions.
Which of the following statements, if true, most strengthens the author's claim that there are far fewer children available for adoption than there are people who want to adopt?
(A) The number of couples waiting to adopt has increased significantly in the last decade. not saying anything about whether children also increased. so cannot strengthen
(B) The number of adoptions in the current year is greater than the number of adoptions in any preceding year. comparing adoptations which is irrelevant
(C) The number of adoptions in a year is approximately equal to the number of children available for adoption in that period. Almost all children available get adopted in a year and still 2 million parents are waiting to adopt this yr which clearly indicates that children are less then parents want to adopt.
(D) People who seek to adopt children often go through a long process of interviews and investigation by adoption agencies. Irrelevant
(E) People who seek to adopt children generally make very good parents. Irrelevant

It is therefore encouraging that there is the following evidence that the pharmaceutical division is growing stronger: it contributed 45 percent of the corporation's profits, up from 20 percent the previous year.
On the basis of the facts stated, which of the following is the best critique of the evidence presented above?
(A) The increase in the pharmaceutical division's contribution to corporation profits could have resulted largely from the introduction of single, important new product. strengthen the statement rather than weakening.
(B) In multidivisional corporations that have pharmaceutical divisions, over half of the corporation's profits usually come from the pharmaceuticals. Irrelevant
(C) The percentage of the corporation's profits attributable to the pharmaceutical division could have increased even if that division's performance had not improved. It is the answer. Because even if pharma division didnt grow, its %age share in profit grown due to decrease in profit from other sectors.
(D) The information cited does not make it possible to determine whether the 20 percent share of profits cited was itself an improvement over the year before. Irrelevant because its talking about previous yr rather than current yr
(E) The information cited does not make it possible to compare the performance of the chemical and pharmaceutical divisions in of the percent of total profits attributable to each. It itself is against passage

1st CR
Phiroz has explained it quite well
Thanks dear..
OA(C)
2nd CR
The only ones which are close are (C) & (D)
I marked (D)
but now I feel looking at the question :- for a rise from 20 to 45 % contribution from pharma is well defined. So best critique will be either pharma contributes loss or others contribute minimal profit and so among those pharma contributes higher share(even if division didn't performed)
unusually poor show of chemical div. points towards 2nd part and so OA(C)

Parent O: That would be pointless. Technology advances so rapidly that the computers used by todays high schools would become obsolete by the time these children are adults.
Which one of the following, if true, is the strongest logical counter parent P can make to parent Qs objection?
(A) When technology is advancing rapidly, regular training is necessary to keep ones skills at a level proficient enough to deal with the society in which one lives.
(B) Throughout history people have adapted to change, and there is no reason to believe that todays children are not equally capable of adapting to technology as it advances.
(C) In the process of learning to language, children increase their ability to interact with computer technology.
(D) Automotive technology is continually advancing too, but that does not result in ones having to relearn to drive cars as the new advances are incorporated into new automobiles
(E) Once people have graduated from high school, they have less time to learn about computers and technology than they had during their schooling years.

Statistician: A financial magazine claimed that its survey of its subscribers showed that North Americans are more concerned about their personal finances than about politics. One question was: Which do you think about more: politics or the joy of earning money? This question is clearly biased. Also, the readers of the magazine are a self-selecting sample. Thus, there is reason to be skeptical about the conclusion drawn in the magazines survey.
Each of the following, if true, would strengthen the statisticians argument EXCEPT:
(A) The credibility of the magazine has been called into question on a number of occasions.
(B) The conclusions drawn in most magazine surveys have eventually been disproved.
(C) Other surveys suggest that North Americans are just as concerned about politics as they are about finances.
(D) There is reason to be skeptical about the results of surveys that are biased and unrepresentative.
(E) Other surveys suggest that North Americans are concerned not only with politics and finances, but also with social issues.

(B) Throughout history people have adapted to change, and there is no reason to believe that todays children are not equally capable of adapting to technology as it advances.------although closer, but A mentions the relevancy to advancing technology
(C) In the process of learning to language, children increase their ability to interact with computer technology.------no point to show about introduction at schools.
(D) Automotive technology is continually advancing too, but that does not result in ones having to relearn to drive cars as the new advances are incorporated into new automobiles----irrelevant
(E) Once people have graduated from high school, they have less time to learn about computers and technology than they had during their schooling years.------doesn't mention about coping with advanced technology.

Although lil weak in CR, gave a try. Plz confirm the ans.

Which one of the following, if true, is the strongest logical counter parent P can make to parent Qs objection?
(A) When technology is advancing rapidly, regular training is necessary to keep ones skills at a level proficient enough to deal with the society in which one lives. --nothing mentioned about training.
(B) Throughout history people have adapted to change, and there is no reason to believe that todays children are not equally capable of adapting to technology as it advances. --children capability is not the question, technology introduction is.
(C) In the process of learning to language, children increase their ability to interact with computer technology. -- doesn't make strong logical counter.
(D) Automotive technology is continually advancing too, but that does not result in ones having to relearn to drive cars as the new advances are incorporated into new automobiles -- this analogy suggest that even if technology advances, if one has basic skills he will be able to adapt to the advances made.
(E) Once people have graduated from high school, they have less time to learn about computers and technology than they had during their schooling years. --irrevelant
Sorry if my reasoning is not upto mark. I am weak in CR.

Both CRs are heavy ones .. Here they are
Pl. justify your choices... It is a must
A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.
The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(B) Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.
I am confused with above CR can't interpret the ques. asked, all options look same.
Lark Manufacturing Company initiated a voluntary Quality Circles program for machine operators. Independent surveys of employee attitudes indicated that the machine operators participating in the program were less satisfied with their work situations after two years of the programs existence than they were at the programs start. Obviously, any workers who participate in a Quality Circles program will, as a result, become less satisfied with their jobs.
Each of the following, if true, would weaken the conclusion drawn above EXCEPT:
(A) The second survey occurred during a period of recession when rumors of cutbacks and layoffs at Lark Manufacturing were plentiful.
(B) The surveys also showed that those Lark machine operators who neither participated in Quality Circles nor knew anyone who did so reported the same degree of lessened satisfaction with their work situations as did the Lark machine operators who participated in Quality Circles.
(C) While participating in Quality Circles at Lark Manufacturing, machine operators exhibited two of the primary indicators of improved job satisfaction: increased productivity and decreased absenteeism.
(D) Several workers at Lark Manufacturing who had participated in Quality Circles while employed at other companies reported that, while participating in Quality Circles in their previous companies, their work satisfaction had increased.
(E) The machine operators who participated in Quality Circles reported that, when the program started, they felt that participation might improve their work situations.

The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This is my answer because even if more than 20% of the victims wear seat belts, 80% of the severely injured were without seat belts. It clearly indicates that wearing seat belt reduces severe injuries.
(B) Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car. It cannot be the answer because of considering all drivers and front seat passengers. Survey was done only among victims and not all drivers and front seat passengers.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.Irrelevant: comparing front seat passengers with rear seat passengers.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. Repeating origial sentence, it is clearly mentioned above 80% not wearing seat belt because survey was done among victims.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury. Irrelevant, nothing to do with passage

Each of the following, if true, would weaken the conclusion drawn above EXCEPT:
(A) The second survey occurred during a period of recession when rumors of cutbacks and layoffs at Lark Manufacturing were plentiful. It weakens the conclusion by attributing reason to recession.
(B) The surveys also showed that those Lark machine operators who neither participated in Quality Circles nor knew anyone who did so reported the same degree of lessened satisfaction with their work situations as did the Lark machine operators who participated in Quality Circles. It weakens the conclusion due to equal response from both nonparticipants as well as participants.
(C) While participating in Quality Circles at Lark Manufacturing, machine operators exhibited two of the primary indicators of improved job satisfaction: increased productivity and decreased absenteeism. It weakens the conclusion by proving improved job satisfactions.
(D) Several workers at Lark Manufacturing who had participated in Quality Circles while employed at other companies reported that, while participating in Quality Circles in their previous companies, their work satisfaction had increased. It weakens the conclusion by showing improved job satisfaction in other industries.
(E) The machine operators who participated in Quality Circles reported that, when the program started, they felt that participation might improve their work situations.
This is my answer. Since the participants wear expecting improved work situations, they were less satisfied after two yrs. But not all who participates feel the same and become less satisfied.

good dear both are right!!
My understanding from the ques says 20% wore seat belts - yet got injured and 80% not wear - yet got injured
So wearing seat belts is safer and reduces risk is the conclusion, right?
can u plz explain the meaning of
The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
Statement should be or not be true?

Statement should support the conclusion. Both 'not' and 'unless' are -ve, so eliminate both. Now its "The conclusion above is properly drawn if which of the following is true?"

Aise nehi yaar.. As per option A, more than 20%(let say 40%) of victims wear seat belts. So 60% of the victims do not wear seat belts. If wearing seat belts do not prevent severe injuries, 60% of the severely injured victims should be without seat belts. But as per question statement 80% of the severely injured victims are without seat belts, it means wearing seat belts is preventing severe injuries which is the conclusion.

Archaeologists seeking the location of a legendary siege and destruction of a city are excavating in several possible places, including a middle and a lower layer of a large mound. The bottom of the middle layer contains some pieces of pottery of type 3, known to be from a later period than the time of the destruction of the city, but the lower layer does not.
19. Which of the following hypotheses is best supported by the evidence above?
(A) The lower layer contains the remains of the city where the siege took place------- it negates the evidence
(B) The legend confuses stories from two different historical periods-----irrelevant
(C) The middle layer does not represent the period of the siege.---- it is what the evidence says
(D) The siege lasted for a long time before the city was destroyed----- it cannot be concluded from the evidence stated
(E) The pottery of type 3 was imported to the city by traders.-- it indicates it should be in the lower layer before the siege which is not true
20. The force of the evidence cited above is most seriously weakened if which of the following is true?
(A) Gerbils, small animals long native to the area, dig large burrows into which objects can fall when the burrows collapse.--- it indicates that pottery 3 found in bottom of middle layer was because of this burrow after the dstruction of the city i.e exactly against the evidence stated
------------All other options support the evidence : lower layer, siege , middle layer , city destruction
(B) Pottery of types 1 and 2, found in the lower level, was used in the cities from which, according to the legend, the besieging forces came.
(C) Several pieces of stone from a lower-layer wall have been found incorporated into the remains of a building in the middle layer.
(D) Both the middle and the lower layer show evidence of large-scale destruction of habitations by fire.
(E) Bronze ax heads of a type used at the time of the siege were found in the lower level of excavation.
These are my take they may be wrong I am least bothered I want a correct understanding ,,, what do you say phirozz!!!

Lists of hospitals have been compiled showing which hospitals have patient death rates exceeding the national average. The data have been adjusted to allow for differences in the ages of patients.
Each of the following, if true, provides a good logical ground for hospitals to object to interpreting rank on these lists as one of the indices of the quality of hospital care EXCEPT:
(A) Rank order might indicate insignificant differences, rather than large differences, in numbers of patient deaths.----- directly objects rank order sys.
(B) Hospitals that keep patients longer are likely to have higher death rates than those that discharge patients earlier but do not record deaths of patients at home after discharge.----- objects rank order sys. and no where age diff. mentioned
(C) Patients who are very old on admission to a hospital are less likely than younger patients to survive the same types of illnesses or surgical procedures.---------because young and old i.e the age difference and same kind of illness are compared it clearly indicates this as the answer
(D) Some hospitals serve a larger proportion of low-income patients, who tend to be more seriously ill when admitted to a hospital----- certifies the reason of high rate of death by saying large proportion low income patients
(E) For-profit hospitals sometimes do not provide intensive-care units and other expensive services for very sick patients but refer or transfer such patients to other hospitals.------- objects the functioning of rank order sys.
The following proposal to amend the bylaws of an organization was circulated to its members for comment.
When more than one nominee is to be named for an office, prospective nominees must consent to nomination and before giving such consent must be told who the other nominees will be.
Which of the following comments concerning the logic of the proposal is accurate if it cannot be known who the actual nominees are until prospective nominees have given their consent to be nominated?
(A) The proposal would make it possible for each of several nominees for an office to be aware of who all of the other nominees are--- this is quite possible as it will give the opportunity to give the consent.
(B) The proposal would widen the choice available to those choosing among the nominees.---- similar to (A) but it is not only about choice it is also about consent.
(C) If there are several prospective nominees, the proposal would deny the last nominee equal treatment with the first.---- it becomes more conditional. Prospective nominees need to give consent for all the other last cannot be singled out.
(D) The proposal would enable a prospective nominee to withdraw from competition with a specific person without making that withdrawal known-------- a group of prospective nominees select other actual nominees and arrive at a consensus for this. Nowhere it is given they can back out at own will.
(E) If there is more than one prospective nominee, the proposal would make it impossible for anyone to become a nominee------ the word impossible is a constraint though it is close to answer but we can't accurately say everyone will dissent from others leading to no selection.
