Business Consultant: Some corporations shun the use of executive titles because they fear that the use of titles indicating position in the corporation tends to inhibit communication up and down the corporate hierarchy. Since an executive who uses a title is treated with more respect by outsiders, however, use of a title can facilitate an executive's dealings with external businesses. Clearly, corporations should adopt the compromise of encouraging their executives to use their corporate titles externally but not internally, since even if it is widely known that the corporation's executives use titles outside their organization, this knowledge does not by itself inhibit communication within the corporation.
In the consultant's reasoning, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?
A. The first describes a strategy that has been adopted to avoid a certain problem; the second presents a drawback to that strategy. B. The first describes a strategy that has been adopted to avoid a certain problem; the second is a consideration raised to call into question the effectiveness of that strategy as a means of achieving that goal. C. The first describes a strategy that has been adopted to avoid a certain problem; the second is a consideration the consultant raises in questioning the significance of that problem. D. The first is part of an explanation that the consultant offers for a certain phenomenon; the second is that phenomenon. E. The first describes a policy for which the consultant seeks to provide a justification; the second is a consideration the consultant raises as part of that justification.
Hmmm I can rule out D and E E. The second cannot be a part of the justification of the first one D. I don't think either one is a phenomenon because the author uses words "some" and "can be" Between A,B, and C I can rule out B as the second can't be a consideration against "that goal"(goal of first is communication inside the organization) second one talks about a different thing Between A and C. I think A is better because a compromise can be made between an advantage and a draw back. Also author's tone doesn't suggest he is questioning the significance as he goes on to say a compromise has to be made so he has to view first one as useful My answer is A.
Hi neo,
I too wud go with (A)..Shiva has given a pretty good explaination for this.... But again, looking at the last two Boldface questons, expect the unexpected!!
Thanks for posting these questions on this thread...can u plz share the source of these CRs...

My bet also is on choice A, though the second bold-phrase is not exactly a drawback . My second choice would be "E". E says that the first bold-phrase is a policy, which sounds reasonable. Next, the Author does attempt to justify this policy by explaining the rationale. Finally, if we can consider (with great difficulty due to the two previous CRs) the second bold-phrase as something considered along with (or say in the back drop of) the justification . The author considers the advatage in the backdrop of the problem to arrive at the recommendation (internal - external).
Choices B,C and D look clearly wrong.
B - Author doesn't discuss the effectiveness of the strategy for acheiving that goal C - Author doesn't comment upon how significant is the problem D - Phenomennon must be fact or occurence. The straregy is more of a policy rather than an occurence

I will go by the option B. Well the fight is between A and B but the 2nd sentence begin with "However" and include a word "Can" so it is just a consideration not an emphatic objection to be called as a drawback.
The phrase "Call into question" means Challenge the accuracy.

try this out, though it doesn't come in the league of boldface CRs posted by Neo...
In the past year, there has been a large drop in the number of new cars sold, due to harsh economic conditions in the marketplace and high taxes. At the same time, the average price paid for a new car has risen dramatically. Which of the following, if true, best explains the increase in the average price of a new car? (A) The price of used cars has climbed steadily over the past ten years. (B) There will be a tax reduction later in the year which is expected to aid moderate and low income families. (C) The market for expensive car has been unaffected by the current economic conditions. (D) Economic conditions are expected to get significantly worse before the end of the year. (E) Low demand for trucks and vans has led to lower production in the factories.
Which of the following is the most logical completion of the passage below? Many companies have been pushing for a three-week extension of daylight saving time, which would mean that the sun would continue to set an hour later during the fall months. The owners of a chain of convenience stores, for example, expect to gain $15 million a year in additional sales, mostly from people who tend to______ (A) stay away from these stores after dark (B) stay outdoors during the fall months (C) spend more money in the fall (D) spend less money in the fall (E) shop at these stores when they are pressed for time

The sale has deteriorated due to---harsh economic condition and high taxes. while at the same time average price has increased so harsh economic condition and high taxes will have a say in the sale.
A. The price of used cars doesn't help in predicting the price of new cars. Out of scope B. Taxes will have a say but the data is specific to moderate and low income families so I think we cannot conclude on a general trend C. Again specific to expensive cars and it also doesn't help in anything D. Economic conditions have a say in the sales. What if it is going to worsen? then more consumers will buy it now which pushes the prices. I don't know whether I am assuming too much but one of taxes and economic conditions will have a say and this looks more general than B Looks ok E. Demand on trucks and vans is out of scope doesn't help After ruling out all out others only B and D are speak about with something stated in the paragraph and D looks better My answer is D

The owners of a chain will get 15 million extra, fact--Sun will continue to set an hour late. Additional income here requires someone who earlier did not spend will spend now. And that spending has to be consistent with fact stated A. sun will set an hour late so they will stay an hour more and this can contribute to additional income B.Doesn't contribute to additional income (constant source I guess) C.Doesn't contribute to additional income in accordance with fact stated so we cannot complete this passage with a new fact D. doesn't contribute at all E. Irrelevant, doesn't contribute at all I will go with A

Answer to this question is (C). We need to decipher the logic behind the option (C) and relate it to the premises.
Author says that there was a larg drop in number of cars sold (for whatever reason), but average price paid for new cars has increased. It can happen when most of the cars sold in that period were high-end cars. For example, average of first 10 consecutive +ve integer is 5.5, but the average of five +ve integers starting from 6 is 8...

A- talks abt used cars.We are concerned with new cars. So ignored B,D,E-Dont say any anything about the high average price of new cars
So my choice is C. If total car sales decreases but the sales of expensive high end cars remains the same, average price goes up. So It should be C

Montaqes, Where did you get this question from can you please check the source again. It looks strange if ans is C since no data on number of expensive ,less expensive and least expensive etc are not provided how can we assume anything? what if only a few expensive cars are sold? and the number is negligible to average which is very much a possibility without data I think we can't comment on average. I am wary about choosing her

Hi Shiva,
The sale of expensive cars has not been affected. But the total car sales have come down. The implication is that sales of only the low price cars have been affected/the proportion of expensive cars sold has gone up. So inevitably the average price goes up...

Shiva,
I beleive, no specific data regarding the number of expensive or cheap cars is required. We just need to understand that if a lowest weighted element is taken out from the group of elements, the average of the remaing elements of the group will definately increase (it tends to move towards higher side). You may be correct in saying that the Shift (in the average) would not be significant enough, but other options are also not justifying the given situation as well.
Corporate Officer: Last year was an unusually poor one for our chemical division, which has traditionally contributed about 60 percent of the corporations profits. It is therefore encouraging that there is the following evidence that the pharmaceutical division is growing stronger: it contributed 45 percent of the corporations profits, up from 20 percent the previous year. On the basis of the facts stated, which of the following is the best critique of the evidence presented above? (A) The increase in the pharmaceutical divisions contribution to corporation profits could have resulted largely from the introduction of single, important new product. (B) In multidivisional corporations that have pharmaceutical divisions, over half of the corporations profits usually come from the pharmaceuticals. (C) The percentage of the corporations profits attributable to the pharmaceutical division could have increased even if that divisions performance had not improved. (D) The information cited does not make it possible to determine whether the 20 percent share of profits cited was itself an improvement over the year before. (E) The information cited does not make it possible to compare the performance of the chemical and pharmaceutical divisions in of the percent of total profits attributable to each.

Is the answer E..
My line of thought is chemicals division which contributed 60% had a bad yr.So very likely the overall results were also bad.So even marginal improvements in other divisions may lead to those divisions contributing higher proportions to the total profit.......

I too would go with (E), but the OA is (C)..need ur inputs

I dint read option C properly. Actually Option C states exactly what I said..
The contribution of Chemicals division was at 60% and the chemicals div has had a bad yr.So the overall results take a hit.So even if Pharma results had not increased , their contribution to the overall company results wud definitely have improved. Now there is nothing to be happy abt here..
To better explain , lets use some numbers..
Say total profit is 100 60 is from the chemicals division. 20 is from the pharma division.
Chemicals-bad yr so results come down to say 20 for that division and there is no difference in the results of any other div..
overall profit will be 60 and pharma's contribution will be 20/60 or 33.33 %. This increase is without any material difference in that divisions result..

The answer should be E. There is not enough information to conclude that the chemical's division did not perform well because the Chemical division might have produced the same amount of profits even this year, but since Pharma division's profits grew so much, the percentage contribution of chemical division got reduced.
