12. Are you still reading the other newspaper in town? Did you know that the Daily Bugle is owned by an out-of-town business syndicate that couldnt care less about the people of Gotham City? Read the Daily Clarion, the only real voice of the people of Gotham City!
Which of the following most directly refutes the argument raised in the advertisement above?
(A) Over half of the advertising revenues of the Daily Clarion come from firms whose headquarters are located outside of Gotham City.
(B) The Daily Clarion usually devotes more of its pages to out-of-town news than does the Daily Bugle.
(C) Nearly 40 percent of the readers of the Daily Clarion reside outside the limits of Gotham City.
(D) The editor-in-chief and all the other members of the editorial staff of the Daily Bugle have lived and worked in Gotham City for ten years or more.
(E) The Daily Bugle has been published in Gotham City for a longer time than has the Daily Clarion.
Rohit.

i think the answer is option (D) as it the main statement is that Daily Clarion is owned by in-town syndicate and the other is owned by out of town sydicate so daily clariton is the real voice of the city.
and in option D it is mentioned that Daily bugle editor and other staff members have lived in Gotham and thus weakens the argument given.

what's the official answer?

i also agree with D being the answer..
others are not 100% correct

What could be the fee to be paid for registration/writing GMAT test?

OA is (D). Thanks for the clarification guyz!

Rohit.

Lemme eliminate the wrong answers.

Main stmt concerns about whether the local news is reaching the people of GC.

A: revenue has got nothing to do here
B: doesn't effect the extent to which the local news is reachable to the city's people
C: doesn't talk about the local people
D
E: age doesn't matter

Each of these choices to be regarded as an answer needs additional assumptions

OA is (D). Thanks for the clarification guyz!

Guys,, The main argument being made here is -- which newspaper cares more ? the ans to this question shud be our answer...

bugle atleast prints more papers on Gotham city, which hints that it is more concerned abt the city.

and since it is nt mentioned -- it may be assumed that the staff of clarion has been into printing in gotham for more than 50 years as compared to 10 years of bugle.. so I feel B is closer.

The main argument here is 'Daily Clarion is an out ot town sysndicate & so it cares less for the Gotham people.
If we get any information saying that the people related to Daily clarion are not out of town then the argument can be refuted.
Option D says that the editor in chief & other employees have lived in Gotham for 10 yrs or more, with this the argument is refuted.

Hi,

Isn't the Answers & Explantions section right after the Questions section in the same book?

Rohit.
1. Below is an excerpt from a letter that was sent by the chairman of a corporation to the stockholders.
A number of charges have been raised against me, some serious, some trivial. Individuals seeking to control the corporation for their own purposes have demanded my resignation. Remember that no court of law in any state has found me guilty of any criminal offense whatsoever. In the American tradition, as you know, an individual is considered innocent until proven guilty. Furthermore, as the corporations unbroken six-year record of growth will show, my conduct of my official duties as chairman has only helped enhance the success of the corporation, and so benefited every stockholder.
Which of the following can be properly inferred from the excerpt?
(A) The chairman believes that all those who have demanded his resignation are motivated by desire to control the corporation for their own purposes.
(B) Any misdeeds that the chairman may have committed were motivated by his desire to enhance the success of the corporation.
(C) The chairman is innocent of any criminal offense.
(D) The corporation has expanded steadily over the past six years.
(E) Any legal proceedings against the chairman have resulted in his acquittal.

The OA is (D). What could possibly eliminate (A) guys?

Thanks,
Rohit.

The question states that:
Individuals who want to control the company, have demanded resignation (There might be other ppl who have demanded resignation but for other reasons).
Whereas "A" states that all those who have demanded resignation, want to control the company.
This answer is actually reverse, hence incorrect. I hope it helps.
rajatmeh understood your answer...but a small doubt on the option D...does "growth" and "expanded" mean the same???

The difference between "expanded" and "growth" can be debatable. But given the 5 options and eliminating 4 choices (based on strong reasons), you can assume that expanded and growth are same. That's what I thought, while attempting this questions.

yaa got that..
thanks

A law requiring companies to offer employees unpaid time off to care for their children will harm the economic competitiveness of our nations businesses. Companies must be free to set their own employment policies without mandated parental-leave regulations.
Which of the following, if true, would most seriously weaken the conclusion of the argument above?
(A) A parental-leave law will serve to strengthen the family as a social institution in this country.
(B) Many businesses in this country already offer employees some form of parental leave.
(C) Some of the countries with the most economically competitive businesses have strong parental-leave regulations.
(D) Only companies with one hundred or more employees would be subject to the proposed parental-leave law.ďźˆC
(E) In most polls, a majority of citizens say they favor passage of a parental-leave law.

The choice is obv between b and c. Can someone explain how we should pick between the two?

C is definitely correct.
The argument made here is 'parental-leave regulations harm the economic competitiveness of our nations businesses', correct option should be one which denies this argument.
In option C it says that many countries with 'parental-leave regulations have most economically competitive businesses', which weakens the argument.
In option B is says that many businesses offer employees parental leave but it says nothing about their effect on economic competitiveness

I hope this helps...

The conclusion says that the companies should have the freedom to choose their own policies and no "mandated parental-leave regulations" should be there.

I feel mandated is the key word here.

As (B) doesn't attack the conclusion that way. (B) mentions that if companies are doing they are doing at their own will and not because of any mandatory rule imposed. Hence incorrect.

Also (C) should be correct because even with parental-leave regulations, nations economy can prosper.

hey!!! cn ny1 help me out vid thez cary probs?? n plz do explain also

1. If all statements in the passage are true and if it is also true that a bookstore does not cater to mass tastes, which one of the following CANNOT be true?
(A) The bookstore profitably sells some of its books at below-market prices.
(B) The bookstore does not profitably sell any of its books at below-market prices.
(C) Either the bookstore has exclusive access to a large specialized market or else it does not get a discount from any publishers.
(D) The bookstore does not have exclusive access to a large specialized market but profitably sells some of its books at below-market prices.D
(E) The bookstore does not have exclusive access to a large specialized market, nor does it get a discount from any publishers.

2 Nature constantly adjusts the atmospheric carbon level. An increase in the level causes the atmosphere to hold more heat, which causes more water to evaporate from the oceans, which causes increased rain. Rain washes some carbon from the air into the oceans, where it eventually becomes part of the seabed. A decrease in atmospheric carbon causes the atmosphere to hold less heat, which causes decreased evaporation from the oceans, which causes less rain, and thus less carbon is washed into the oceans. Yet some environmentalists worry that burning fossil fuels may raise atmospheric carbon to a dangerous level. It is true that a sustained increase would threaten human life. But the environmentalists should relaxnature will continually adjust the carbon level.
Which one of the following, if true, would most weaken the argument in the passage?
(A) Plant life cannot survive without atmospheric carbon.
(B) It is not clear that breathing excess carbon in the atmosphere will have a negative effect on human life.
(C) Carbon is part of the chemical blanket that keeps the Earth warm enough to sustain human life.
(D) Breathing by animals releases almost 30 times as much carbon as does the burning of fossil fuels.E
(E) The natural adjustment process, which occurs over millions of years, allows wide fluctuations in the carbon level in the short term.

3. Fire ants from Brazil now infest the southern United States. Unlike queen fire ants in Brazil, two queens in the United States share a nest. Ants from these nests are more aggressive than those from single-queen nests. By destroying virtually all insects in the nest area, these aggressive ants gain sole access to food sources, and the ant population skyrockets. Since certain predator insects in Brazil limit the fire-ant population there, importing such predator insects into the United States would be of overall benefit to the environment by stopping the increase of the fire-ant population in the United States.
Each of the following is an assumption made in the argument EXCEPT:
(A) The imported insects would not prove more damaging to the environment in the United States than are the fire ants themselves.
(B) The predator insects from Brazil could survive in the ecological environment found in the United States.
(C) The especially aggressive fire ants from the two-queen nests would not be able to destroy the Brazilian predator insects.
(D) The predator insects would stop the increase of the ant population before the ants spread to states that are farther north.D
(E) The rate of increase of the fire-ant population would not exceed the rate at which the predator insects could kill the ants.

q1- the question says that all the statements are true except one.so if we take all answer choices , the first and the second are contrasting , indicationg either of the choice is only correct.taking other choices , c,d,e its clear that B is the answer.
q2-The question asks for a relation between the carbon level and the natures adjustment.Only answer E satisfies it by negating the short term adjustment by nature.
q3-E .The passage assumes that the predator ants would kill the ants and will limit the population of the two queen ants , but if the growth of the two queen ants will exceed the rate of killing then importing the ants is of no use.
