C .doesnt provide a reason to the hospitals to object to the rankings in the list. Its just a general statement.

Agreed, and it is a generic statement that is true irrespective of hospitals - so this doesnt give one hospital a reason to cite as a flaw in the rankings

Can some1 suggest me books to imprive in this section ??

Hi all
Can some1 suggest me books to imprive in this section ??

I dunno what level you are at.. but going by what I know, OG-11/12 is/are the best tools for verbal section.. read is thoroughly and intelligently..read the explanations for each question and assimilate as much as possible..

last 30-40 odd questions in SC and CR are the most interesting ones..

hope that helps!! Best luck!! πŸ˜‰
Someone please help me answer this question. Explanations would be highly appreciated. I never understood the question
Lists of hospitals have been compiled showing which hospitals have patient death rates exceeding the national average. The data have been adjusted to allow for differences in the ages of patients.
Each of the following, if true, provides a good logical ground for hospitals to object to interpreting rank on these lists as one of the indices of the quality of hospital care EXCEPT:
(A) Rank order might indicate insignificant differences, rather than large differences, in numbers of patient deaths.
(B) Hospitals that keep patients longer are likely to have higher death rates than those that discharge patients earlier but do not record deaths of patients at home after discharge.
(C) Patients who are very old on admission to a hospital are less likely than younger patients to survive the same types of illnesses or surgical procedures.
(D) Some hospitals serve a larger proportion of low-income patients, who tend to be more seriously ill when admitted to a hospital.
(E) For-profit hospitals sometimes do not provide intensive-care units and other expensive services for very sick patients but refer or transfer such patients to other hospitals.

Question: Find NOT good logical ground for hospitals to object to interpreting rank on these lists..
(A) Rank order might indicate insignificant differences, rather than large differences, in numbers of patient deaths. >> If the difference is insignificant then the ranking holds no good. Fair enough!!
(B) Good reason to Object
(C) Good reason to Object
(D) Some hospitals serve a larger proportion of low-income patients, who tend to be more seriously ill when admitted to a hospital. >> Income group and the level of illness should not be reason for poor health record of patients. Not so logical.
(E) Good reason to Object
I would have chosen one of option A or option D.
Hummm... Let's go with option D. what's the correct answer??

My prev post to this question got lost somewhre...

Option A and D are what I get after elimination of the sure wrong choices.. if A is true then its kinda logical to disregard the ranking, which leaves option D alone..

I would have clicked option D. Since I believe income group and the magnitude of the health should not be a reason behind bad health service..;)

what's the correct one..??..

Teresa: Manned spaceflight does not have a future, since it cannot compete economically with other means of accomplishing the objectives of spaceflight.
Edward: No mode of human transportation has a better record of reliability: two accidents in twenty-five years. Thus manned spaceflight definitely has a positive future.
Which of the following is the best logical evaluation of Edward's argument as a response to Teresa's argument?
(A) It cites evidence that, if true, tends to disprove the evidence cited by Teresa in drawing her conclusion.
(B) It indicates a logical gap in the support that Teresa offers for her conclusion.
(C) It raises a consideration that outweighs the argument Teresa makes.
(D) It does not meet Teresa's point because it assumes that there is no serious impediment to transporting people into space, but this was the issue raised by Teresa.
(E) It fails to respond to Teresa's argument because it does not address the fundamental issue of whether space activities should have priority over other claims on the national budget.

Question: logical evaluation of Edward's argument
Teresa's arg: Spaceflight cannot compete economically with other means of accomplishing the objectives of spaceflight
Edward's response: No mode of human transportation has a better record of reliability
Note: Edward is unable to connect dots in here... Teresa is talking about economical viability of the spaceflight where as Edward is advertising the safety asscoaited with spaceflight.
(A) Crap
(B) Crap
(C) Enticing but Crap
(D) It does not meet Teresa's point because it assumes that there is no serious impediment to transporting people into space, but this was the issue raised by Teresa. >> Trnsporting people into space... thats what teresa is talking about... "manned" spaceflight..
(E) It fails to respond to Teresa's argument because it does not address the fundamental issue of whether space activities should have priority over other claims on the national budget. >> What national budget are we talking about in here??

Pretty messed up choices.. I would have chosen option D, bcoz of its closeness to the Note we made above before jumping to the options ;)

what's the correct answer..??..

Hi Varun,

Regarding your reasoning for point D, I may ask why not??

Low Income group people might tend to defer admission to a hospital
until and unless it is absolutely inevitable and at that point, their chances of recovery/survival may be bleak...some hospitals might be receiving this category patients more than others - this does not mean the others are necessarily better in the quality of healthcare services - so this is a point of objection.

Option C,however is more generic..in general, the probability of survival of old patients vis-a-vis young patients has got to be the same across hospitals - it is the quality of the hospital which will really come into play here.

Let me know if u guys agree...

Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent. In fact, correctly addressed mail takes longer than this only when it is damaged in transit. Overall, however, most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent.
If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?
A) A large proportion of the mail that is correctly addressed is damaged in transit.
B) No incorrectly addressed mail arrives within two business days of being sent.
C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly addressed.
D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.
E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between two and three business days after being sent.

Most of the whole blood donated for transfusion is type O, which is compatible with all blood types. Type O is especially important in emergencies which don't allow time for typing the victim's blood, but for this reason it is usually in short supply.
Given the above, which of the following must be true?
A) Most of the population has type O blood.
B) Transfusions of any but type O blood necessitates prior typing of the recipients blood.
C) Only type O blood requires too much time for typing in emergencies.
D) Type O blood is especially useful because it is the same type as most people's blood.
E) Supplies of type O blood are always too low to meet emergencies.

This is easy one.. jlt I posted πŸ˜ƒ

B. nothing is definitely said about incorrect mail adress mails..
C.This is directly a part of the evidence.
D.we can't say about the portion of mails that's incorrectly addressed.
e.wrong against concusion
A.as most mails reach after 3 days or more,2nd statement says it ..so a large portion of mails is correctly addressed but damaged in the transit.

A should be correct..

a.doesn't necessarily has to be true..
b.Yes from 2nd statement it is true as it doesn't need typing the recipients blood grp.
c.not conclusive
d.not necessarily true.
e.not true, it is used in emergencies & so it's shortage,,

Is the answer C ?

its a close call between C and D ...but i will go with D...simply coz ,from the data provided we cant say anything about most mails arriving within 2 days ...
If correctly addressed mail generally takes 2 days to arrive but still the overall average is more than 2 days, then this means that a large proportion of mails is incorrectly addressed.

Right or wrong, Mr nutty professor ??
Pls help me answer this question

The citys public transportation system should be removed from the jurisdiction of the municipal government, which finds it politically impossible either to raise fares or to institute cost-saving reductions in service. If public transportation were handled by a private firm, profits would be vigorously pursued, thereby eliminating the necessity for covering operating costs with government funds.
The statements above best support the conclusion that
(A) the private firms that would handle public transportation would have experience in the transportation industry
(B) political considerations would not prevent private firms from ensuring that revenues cover operating costs
(C) private firms would receive government funding if it were needed to cover operating costs
(D) the public would approve the cost-cutting actions taken by the private firm
(E) the municipal government would not be resigned to accumulating merely enough income to cover costs

Can u plzz post the answer of this question and the other two qs that u had posted on the same day

i think i wud go with becoz in you cannot be sure whether the mail dat arrives within 2 business days is coming at the correct address or not...

the comparison done in follows the data given in the Statement.
i wud prefer over ////

do confirm the answer form your source....

**its said nearly all not totally all correctly addressed mails**
C) Most mail that arrives within two business days of being sent is correctly addressed.
**quite possibly true**
D) A large proportion of mail is incorrectly addressed.
**they all can be damaged ones too**
E) More mail arrives within two business days of being sent than arrives between two and three business days after being sent.
**i cant find data to support this claim**

my take is 'C'...wat's the answer

Let's try this;
Lemme break the passage into easily understandable chunks...

Nearly all mail that is correctly addressed arrives at its destination within two business days of being sent

correctly addressed mail takes longer only when it is damaged in transit

Overall most mail arrives three business days or more after being sent.

This means majority of mails take longer than 2 days,
i.e. majority of mails take longer than what a correctly addressed and undamaged mail takes to reach destination
i.e. either mails are incorrectly addressed (It cannot be damaged bcoz passage says that nearly all correctly messaged reaches in time, means no damage issue)

And it also says "Overall most mail arrives three business days"

So it means majority of mails are incorrectly addressed.

answer is option D

this question was picked from one of the tests... score800 I guess..
