GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

This one is really a good one.
Here is my crack at it.
Answer : E affirmative.

A - Negates what has been stated in the passage.
B - Negates again, as Loren owns a home in RH
C,D - No info is given about Loren's age. Nor about any other property he might own elsewhere.

The Key here is the phrase "must be true" in the question.

This is a classic "scope shift" question. The passage tells us about rules that apply to "residents" of R Harbor. But, while Mr Loren owns a house there, no where does it state that Mr Loren is a also a resident of R Harbour. The scope shift is between "owner of house in R Harbour" vs. "resident of R Harbour". Hence the answer is E

The answer has to be (A), the only other close, yet wrong option is (E)

Why is E wrong: "dire predictions of ecologists" the passage does not mention the specificity of the ecological disaster. Also, this is nearly a restatement of the passage...and in an inference question one has to see what is not explicitly stated (what about chernobyl)

This is where A wins

First, it does not dramatise the disaster with the fires in Kuwait. Second, it also clarifies what is unstated about Chernobyl...that the disaster has much worse an impact than previously anticipated.

This is close, but then a 700+ on a GMAT is a close call as well !

@Montaqes
B, D, E can be ruled out as they dont give any relevant information. As per the sentence in paragraph - "Parasitic wasps lay their eggs directly into the eggs of various host insects in exactly the right numbers for any suitable size of host egg. If they laid too many eggs in a host egg".

I earlier just looked at 'right numbers' and chosen option C which also points towards the right numbers but overlooked this portion - 'a host egg' which makes the correct option as A.

hope this time i am right ;)

The real issue here (which I missed while attempting this Q) is that the wasp lays the eggs directly into the eggs of the host. This is not the same as laying parasitic eggs around the host eggs. That is why the question of number of eggs appears.

Option A Clearly says that the "size" of Host egg can be known --> this can be easily known from the egg laying behavior of the wasp ("number" of eggs)

Hope something is clear

I am currently facing problem in below kind of questions and my accuracy in these is damn low......can anyone please provide context from where i can study more about how to solve these kind of questions

Scientists typically do their most creative work before the age of forty. It is commonly thought that this happens because aging by itself brings about a loss of creative capacity. However, studies show that a disproportionately large number of the scientists who produce highly creative work beyond the age of forty entered their field at an older age than is usual. Since by the age of forty the large majority of scientists have been working in their field for at least fifteen years, the studies' finding strongly suggests that the real reason why scientists over forty rarely produce highly creative work is not that they have simply aged but rather that they generally have spent too long in a given field.

In the argument given, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles?

  1. The first is the position that the argument as a whole opposes; the second is an objection that has been raised against a position defended in the argument.
  2. The first is a claim that has been advanced in support of a position that the argument opposes; the second is a finding that has been used in support of that position.
  3. The first is an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a finding that has been used in support of that explanation.
  4. The first is an explanation that the argument challenges; the second is a finding on which that challenge is based.
  5. The first is an explanation that the argument defends; the second is a finding that has been used to challenge that explanation.

argument - creativity declines due to aging or time spent in field?
first boldface - due to aging
second bold - depends when they entered the field and hence challenges the first boldface.

so i think the last option shud be the answer....

The first is definitely something that the argument tries to refute and the second is support to this refute. I would go for (C).

First of all.. welcome..

Secondly, about ur CR concerns.. I would say that you must concentrate on OG to begin with.. plz go through the explanations given for each question to understand the the question types and also understand how to approach each question type.. knowing all question types would be agr8 help and would be helpful in finding the answers from the pasaage even before you read the options.. and keep practicing..

ATB :cheerio:

thnx a lot varun.. im gng thru OG probs.. its really building sm concepts..i'll continue wid dat.. thnx again....

With Proposition 13, if you bought your house 11 years ago for $75,000, your property tax would be approximately $914 a year (1 percent of $75,000 increased by 2 percent each year for 11 years); and if your neighbor bought an identical house next door to you for $200,000 this year, his tax would be $2,000 (1 percent of $200,000). Without Proposition 13, both you and your neighbor would pay $6,000 a year in property taxes (3 percent of $200,000).
Which of the following is the conclusion for which the author most likely is arguing in the passage above?
(A) Proposition 13 is unconstitutional because it imposes an unequal tax on properties of equal value.
(B) If Proposition 13 is repealed, every homeowner is likely to experience a substantial increase in property taxes.
(C) By preventing inflation from driving up property values, Proposition 13 has saved homeowners thousands of dollars in property taxes.
(D) If Proposition 13 is not repealed, identical properties will continue to be taxed at different rates.

Where is option E..??.. ;)

Ques is: the conclusion for which the author most likely is arguing

Passage:
With prop 13 both new and old property owners pay 1% of property value @ the time of purchase.
Without Prop 13 every property owners pay 3% of property value @ the time of purchase.

Now since "neighbour" word is used, I think this is wa the gist of the passage is;
With prop 13 tax = 1% of 200K = 2000
w/o prop 13 tax = 3% of 200K = 6000

Thus the author seems to indicate towards bias in taxing;

I would have marked option D
(D) If Proposition 13 is not repealed, identical properties will continue to be taxed at different rates.

Question -
Vervet monkeys use different alarm calls to warn each other of nearby predators, depending on whether the danger comes from land or from the air.
Which one of the following, if true, contributes most to an explanation of the behavior of Vervet monkeys described above ?
.
.
C) No predators that pose a danger to vervet monkeys can attack both from land and from the air.
D) Vervet monkeys avoid land-based predators by climbing trees but avoid predation from the air by diving into foliage

Answer per the book- D.

Explanations-
C) - This answer states that the predators using land attacks are different from the predators using air attacks, but this information does not explain why vervet monkeys use different calls to indicate that fact.
D) This is the correct answer. Because vervet monkeys react to predators in different ways, they would need to know if the predator was coming by land or air. Hence, the different calls are used to tell the monkeys whether they should climb trees or dive into the foliage. Since this answer explains the behavior of vervet monkeys, this answer is correct.

My question -
Most of us would tend to go with option C) above for the simple reason that if the predators could attack both from land and air, then the monkeys would be in problem - the different alarm methods would only get them into more trouble. They can neither dive into foliage nor climb trees to escape (as given in option D). How is D the right answer then ?

Had the question quoted predator rathen than 'predators', D) would have made more sense, because it could then attack either from air or land. However since more than one predator could be involved, option C, unless true, does not justify the behavior of the monkeys. Hence C should have been the right answer. (PS: Note how the plural 'predators' in the stimulus changed to 'predator' (singular) in the answer explanation highlighting a potential flaw in the reasoning of the answer by the author(s) of the book).

If anyone can see the reasoning behind the answer per the book, then please comment .. I was also wondering about the fact that our score depends on the reasoning that the test makers deduce while preparing the test. What are the chances that they are always right and not missing any alternative explanation/reasoning to the question which could alter the answer which they think as correct ?????? As per the book, I understand that there is always one correct answer and others are incorrect in GMAT so that no one challenges a question but what if the reasoning behind the correct answer itself is wrong - which we would never know about !!

Question:
contributes most to an explanation of the behavior of Vervet monkeys described above

Passage:
Vervet monkeys use different alarm calls to warn each other of nearby predators, depending on whether the danger comes from land or from the air.

monkeys use different alrsm depending on the danger type... this means different alarm is processed differently and the subsequent action should be dependent on the processing of the signal..

If we can show the behavioral change in monkey's action on recieving different signals (i.e. on threat from different dangers), we can show that the statement makes sense..

I would have marked option D only
D) Vervet monkeys avoid land-based predators by climbing trees but avoid predation from the air by diving into foliage

I havent read through your entire message, but I believe option C is incorrect and option D is right indeed. Hope this helps!!

Thats my second question. If the answers and explanations can be wrong albeit 1 in a 1000, isn't there a chance that our scores may be affected?? Whats the guarantee that the GMAT test makers zeroed in on the right answer while formulating the tests. I've noticed anomalies in Powerscore and Kaplan 800 and am yet to start with OG. Hope OG is much better in this aspect.

@Varun: Thanks, but I think you may been biased when you say u will go with option D(as I already provided the answer per the book:)).
