The proposal to hire ten new police officers in Middletown is quite foolish. There is sufficient funding to pay the salaries of the new officers, but not the salaries of additional court and prison employees to process the increased caseload of arrests and convictions that new officers usually generate.
Which of the following, if true, will most seriously weaken the conclusion drawn above?
(A) Studies have shown that an increase in a city's police force does not necessarily reduce crime.
(B) When one major city increased its police force by 19 percent last year, there were 40 percent more arrests and 13 percent more convictions.
(C) If funding for the new police officers' salaries is approved, support for other city services will have to be reduced during the next fiscal year.
(D) In most United States cities, not all arrests result in convictions, and not all convictions result in prison terms.
(E) Middletown's ratio of police officers to citizens has reached a level at which an increase in the number of officers will have a deterrent effect on crime.
Researchers have found that when very overweight people, who tend to have relatively low metabolic rates, lose weight primarily through dieting, their metabolisms generally remain unchanged. They will thus burn significantly fewer calories at the new weight than do people whose weight is normally at that level. Such newly thin persons will, therefore, ultimately regain weight until their body size again matches their metabolic rate.
The conclusion of the argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A) Relatively few very overweight people who have dieted down to a new weight tend to continue to consume substantially fewer calories than do people whose normal weight is at that level.
(B) The metabolisms of people who are usually not overweight are much more able to vary than the metabolisms of people who have been very overweight.
(C) The amount of calories that a person usually burns in a day is determined more by the amount that is consumed that day than by the current weight of the individual.
(D) Researchers have not yet determined whether the metabolic rates of formerly very overweight individuals can be accelerated by means of chemical agents.
(E) Because of the constancy of their metabolic rates, people who are at their usual weight normally have as much difficulty gaining weight as they do losing it.

Hi Guys Try this out:
Question: A political candidate committed to the principal tenets of a political party may not always explain the implications of his or her party
Fellow Puys,
I need your opinions to improve my hit rate/accuracy in CR.
During mock tests, I think I am bogged down by the thought that I have to nail it, that is messing me up in CR. I had an accuracy of 72% in CR, earlier in my practice sessions. When I am NOT under the time constraint of a test...I am able to answer most (Again about 72-75% accuracy) CRs correctly in about 2-3 minutes.
My concern is:
How to tackle CR, and improve my hit rate? SC and RC are fine with me, for the most part. Initially I was bad with SC...so for the past week or so, I concentrated and practiced a lot. And that took my mind off the CR techniques that I KNEW before.
Please Help !!
Your thoughts, suggestions and experiences are truly appreciated.

Hi Vikram2010
,
My suggestion is take more CAT(Computer Adaptive test) based test and try to avoid mistakes under replicated environment.
All the Best !
cheers !

Question: Movie pirating, the illegal videotaping of a new theater release and subsequent selling of the tape on the black market, is a major concern to the film studios that produce today's mainstream movies. When pirating sales are high, individual studios whose movies are being taped and sold illegally lose a large amount of revenue from black-market viewers who would otherwise pay the full theater price. A low level of pirating sales during a specific period, however, is a fairly reliable indicator of an economic downturn in the movie industry as a whole during that period.
Which of the following, if true, most helps to reconcile the discrepancy noted above?
(A)The film studios that produce today's mainstream movies occasionally serve as distribution outlets for smaller budget independent films that are also susceptible to pirating.
(B)Movie piraters exclusively target blockbuster hits, the existence of which is inextricably tied to the financial success of the movie industry during any given period.
(C)Most movie piraters use small, handheld video cameras that are specially designed to record images in the darkened environment of a movie theater.
(D)The five largest film studios take in a disproportionate amount of movie revenue compared to hundreds of smaller and independent film studios, regardless of whether pirating activity during a specific period is high or low.
(E)A movie pirater who is highly active in selling movies on the black market can sometimes make a full living doing so, while a less active pirater will usually have to supplement the income generated from pirated movies.
I would go with option B
The answer would be option B.
wats the OA..??.. Lemme know if u need details on why opion B ;)

Some of the greatest American entrepreneurs of the 20th century started their business ventures while they were still in college, and could not complete their education as a result. It is possible that had they started their businesses any later, they would not have been as successful.
From the above two statements, it can only be proven that
(A) sometimes, it can be worthwhile to sacrifice an immediate gain for a larger benefit.
(B) education is not always useful.
(3) it pays not to complete an education.
(D) entrepreneurs who start their ventures after completing their education are not as successful as those who start off while still in college.
(E) you do not have to be educated to be an entrepreneur.
Many critics of our Public Schools maintain that far more stress is being placed upon achievements in athletics than is necessary. They condemn the rule that makes games a compulsory part of the school curriculum, saying that it is a tyranny to compel students with no athletic bent to spend hours of misery on the sports field. Such students, they say, should be left to themselves, so that they can more fruitfully utilize their time pursuing a profitable and creative hobby.
Which of the following statements, if true, most weakens the stand taken by the critics?
(A) Many students prefer the sports field to the closed environment of the classroom.
(B) Athletics imparts a sense of discipline and ambition in the students.
(3) Most Private Schools also make it compulsory for students to participate in sporting activities.
(D) Many students who are not interested in sports and athletics do not have a gainful hobby.
(E) Research has shown that athletics play an important role in shaping an individual`s personality
Hi I am new to Pagalguy...
I think the answer is: if not D, then not A.
i.e option (C)
Please tell me if I m correct.

I got D for both the questions .. Whats the OA?
the answer is (D) for reasons as stated under:-
This is a typical weakening the argument example in GMAT. The conclusion derived by the text is that students should be left to themselves to pursue a profitable and creative hobby in the time that is currently allocated for athletics. However, if students do not have a gainful hobby, this proposition will surely be weakened.
Lets analyse other options :-
a) environment related information is out of scope
b) the value addition /benefits of athletics can also be imparted through a gainful hobby
c) Compulsion has got nothing to do in this case as we are evaluating the decision of leaving children on their own to utilize their free time.
e) hobbies might as well play an important role in shaping an individual`s personality.

The answer is (a)
all other options are self explanatory
(d) is wrong because, the argument states SOME entrepreneurs and not ALL.
Not sure.. but I would have marked option B
wats the OA..??.. ;)
The answer is (A).
A trick for assumption questions : always try to negate the selected answer choice. For example if the answer choice says A is a FOOL , you have to check whether the argument's stance changes upon the fact that A is not a FOOL.
The answer is (a)
all other options are self explanatory
(d) is wrong because, the argument states SOME entrepreneurs and not ALL.
Arent you assuming here that completing education gives "immediate gain" and entrepreneurship is a "larger benefit" I'm not convinced with A, if complete education did give immediate gains I wudnt be posting here in this thread :D
As for my reasoning, D wins by elimination
