In the United States, injuries to passengers involved in automobile accidents are typically more severe than in Europe, where laws require a different kind of safety belt. It is clear from this that the United States needs to adopt more stringent standards for safety belt design to protect automobile passengers better.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the argument above EXCEPT:

(A) Europeans are more likely to wear safety belts than are people in the United States.

(B) Unlike United States drivers, European drivers receive training in how best to react in the event of an accident to minimize injuries to themselves and to their passengers.

(C) Cars built for the European market tend to have more sturdy construction than do cars built for the United States market.

(D) Automobile passengers in the United States have a greater statistical chance of being involved in an accident than do passengers in Europe.

(E) States that have recently begun requiring the European safety belt have experienced no reduction in the average severity of injuries suffered by passengers in automobile accidents.

IMO: Answer is D

Logic: Less severe accidents in EU because of better belt design
So, US needs better design of belts to reduce severity.

Logic is Weakened if : Low severity in EU is because of something else other than good belt design

A- Weakens, because it gives an alternative reason to the design
B- Weakens, reduction in quantity of accidents is mentioned, but what about quality?
C- Weakens
D- Does not Weaken, because, even if US implements the design, since it has more accidents and more people involved, it does not help
E- Out of scope, recently implemented, average is bound to be low. Does not have bearing to the argument.
A companys personnel director surveyed employees about their satisfaction with the companys system for awarding employee performance ratings. The survey data indicated that employees who received high ratings were very satisfied with the system. The personnel director concluded from these data that the companys best-performing employees liked the system.

The personnel directors conclusion assumes which of the following?

(A) No other performance rating system is as good as the current system.

(B) The companys best-performing employees received high ratings.

(C) Employees who received low ratings were dissatisfied with the system.

(D) Employees who receive high ratings from a performance-rating system will like that system.

(E) The companys best-performing employees were motivated to perform well by the knowledge that they would receive performance ratings.

B Stands out.

I will go with B on this one.

There are fundamentally two possible changes in an economy that will each cause inflation unless other compensating changes also occur. These changes are either reductions in the supply of goods and services or increases in demand. In a prebanking economy the quantity of money available, and hence the level of demand, is equivalent to the quantity of gold available.

If the statements above are true, then it is also true that in a prebanking economy

(A) any inflation is the result of reductions in the supply of goods and services

(B) if other factors in the economy are unchanged, increasing the quantity of gold available will lead to inflation

(C) if there is a reduction in the quantity of gold available, then, other things being equal, inflation must result

(D) the quantity of goods and services purchasable by a given amount of gold is constant

(E) whatever changes in demand occur, there will be compensating changes in the supply of goods and services

Assumption rule-fill logic gap
Employees with Higher rating-->satisfied

Conclusion --best performing emp--liked the system
Despite the approach of winter, oil prices to industrial customers are exceptionally low this year and likely to remain so. Therefore, unless the winter is especially severe, the price of natural gas to industrial customers is also likely to remain low.

Which of the following, if true, provides the most support for the conclusion above?

(A) Long-term weather forecasts predict a mild winter.
(B) The industrial users who consume most natural gas can quickly and cheaply switch to using oil instead.
(C) The largest sources of supply for both oil and natural gas are in subtropical regions unlikely to be affected by winter weather.
(D) The fuel requirements of industrial users of natural gas are not seriously affected by the weather.
(E) Oil distribution is more likely to be affected by severe winter weather than is the distribution of natural gas.

The OA is option C.

Guidebook writer: I have visited hotels throughout the country and have noticed that in those built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward. Clearly carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously weakens the guidebook writer's argument?
  1. The quality of original carpentry in hotels is generally far superior to the quality of original carpentry in other structures, such as houses and stores.
  2. Hotels built since 1930 can generally accommodate more guests than those built before 1930.
  3. The materials available to carpenters working before 1930 were not significantly different in quality from the materials available to carpenters working after 1930.
  4. The better the quality of original carpentry in a building, the less likely that building is to fall into disuse and be demolished.
  5. The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930.
Community activist: If Morganville wants to keep its central shopping district healthy, it should prevent the opening of a huge SaveAll discount department store on the outskirts of Morganville. Records from other small towns show that whenever SaveAll has opened a store outside the central shopping district of a small town, within five years the town has experienced the bankruptcies of more than a quarter of the stores in the shopping district.

The answer to which of the following would be most useful for evaluating the community activist's reasoning?

  1. Have community activists in other towns successfully campaigned against the opening of a SaveAll store on the outskirts of their towns?
  2. Do a large percentage of the residents of Morganville currently do almost all of their shopping at stores in Morganville?
  3. In towns with healthy central shopping districts, what proportion of the stores in those districts suffer bankruptcy during a typical five-year period?
  4. What proportion of the employees at the SaveAll store on the outskirts of Morganville will be drawn from Morganville?
  5. Do newly opened SaveAll stores ever lose money during their first five years of operation?
Try with reasons...

Main argument:
carpenters working on hotels before 1930 typically worked with more skill, care, and effort than carpenters who have worked on hotels built subsequently

Supporting clause:
noticed that in hotels built before 1930 the quality of the original carpentry work is generally superior to that in hotels built afterward

Question:
What weakens the argument??

Option E
The average length of apprenticeship for carpenters has declined significantly since 1930.

Since people get less time to do the same work, the quality of the final product is not equally good... so this truth is ignored by the guest...

lemme know the OA ;)

I guess, its more of a support to the argument instead that weaken the apprenticeship length has declined and hence the quality of the work of the carpenter is reducing because no time for practice...hence yes the carpentry work... has reduced...

BTW...its not the OA....lets others to try..it seems little subtle

IMO it must be between option B & option C

I would have marked option C

lemme know the OA plz..

At one time, European and Japanese companies tried to imitate their American rivals. Today, American appliance manufacturers import European scientists to lead their research staffs; American automakers design cars that mimic the styling of German, Italian, and French imports; and American electronics firms boast in their advertising of "Japanese-style" devotion to quality and reliability. In the world of high technology, America has lost the battle for international prestige.
Each of the following statements, if true, would help to support the claim above EXCEPT:
(A) An American camera company claims in its promotional literature to produce cameras "as fine as the best Swiss imports."
(B) An American maker of stereo components designs its products to resemble those of a popular Japanese firm.
(C) An American manufacturer of video games uses a brand name chosen because it sounds like a Japanese word.
(D) An American maker of televisions studies German-made televisions in order to adopt German manufacturing techniques
(E) An American maker of frozen foods advertises its dinners as "Real European-style entrees prepared by fine French and Italian chefs."

I will go with option E since it doesn't say anyting about American immitation of European styles.

My take for the below CR is option 2 cos it will directly affect the reasoning of the communist. If % of ppl shopping in central district is low, then the shops in the central district will close even if the SaveALL shops are not opened.

Guys, you were right with the Answer E. But why not C? as it holds good with your reasoning. It just struck to me that probably E will be better over C because E talks about FOOD and the argument is about WORLD OF HIGH TECHNOLOGY

Hi Raj,
I chose option E not bcos it was dealing with Food but cos the option talks ntng about US imitation. It sounds rather an invitation for a Food Festival.I will try to clarify ur doubt reg why not C.Option C states that US is naming a game based on Japenese word-This is inline with the line in the passge "American electronics firms boast in their advertising of "Japanese-style" devotion to quality and reliability".So option C cannot be the answer
