GMAT Data Sufficiency Discussions

Hi Amsey,
Only by seeing x-y = 6 you cannot conclude because x = 3 and y = -3 can yield u 6 and also serve as yes for the main q.So only by seeing this statement we cannot conclude anyting.

I'm sorry but this is DS?

and stem is made based on some facts, if not so they would have asked

is x = y or something?

To me, is X = Y ??

yields an result from the equation, x-y = 6 and answer is NO..

if you could give a condition where it doesn't hold true, i'll be convinced

cheers
Well, answer says B...but IMO, must be D...

look at as what exactly is being asked...

IS X = |Y ???

and equation is x-y = 6...

there is a direct answer to this, which says "NO"...its not possible that X| = |Y...

Well I guess everyone agrees that statement 1 is not sufficient...
Coming to statement 2...
It says x+y=0...which means x=-y
And hence we can say absolute value of x is equal to absolute value of y...
and dats x|=y..
So statement 2 is sufficient in itself and hence answer (B)
correct me if I am wrong

What Deepak has stated is clear. Lets consider two values of x and y
x=3, y =-3
x - y =6 -- well x=|y

x=9, y=3
x - y =6 -- x| != y

thus , we cant determine anything from this equality.

Deepak,

Whats the problem if x=y=0? Plz elaborate.

Ans for the below one :

Is x=y?
(1) x - y = 6
(2) x + y = 0

statement 1 :
==========
x -y = 6 .Can have multiple values.

Statement 2:
===========
x = -y which gives x = y provided x and y is not equal to zero.So statement 2 is not suff.

But combining both, we get x = 3 and y = -3 which will give us the result.

Please post the OA

E should be the ans. whats the OA?

Clearly none alone is sufficient. Lets consider them together.

Lets say Sal of 80 emp last yr was X
Sal of 20 emp last yr was Y
Avg Sal = (X + Y) /100 -----I

This year Sal of 80 is 1.5 X and Sal of 20 remains the same
Avg Sal = (1.5 X + Y)/100 --- II

Unfortunately there is no way calculate II from I. Hence E.

Last year the average salary of the 100 employees of company X was $43,800.What is the average salary of the same 100 employees this year?

1)For 80 of the 100 employees,this year's salary is 15% greater than last year's salary
2)For 20 of the 100 employees, this years salary is same as last years.

IMO C
Deepak,

Whats the problem if x=y=0? Plz elaborate.

Jus thought mod won't play a role for 0.so marked it.Nt sure if you have 0
Absolute value of a number is nothing but the number's distance from 0. I see no reason not to use 0|.

If a and b are integers, is b even?
(1) 3a + 4b is even.
(2) 3a + 5b is even.
A. Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
B. Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.
C. BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is
sufficient.
D. EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.
E. Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

IMO C.

value of a , which we dont know is crucial here.

(1) 3a + 4b is even. -- b has nothing to go to make 3a + 4b even. inSuff
(2) 3a + 5b is even. -- odd a and odd b can suffice and so can even a and even b. InSuff

Taken together
3a + 5b = (3a + 4b) + b
From (1) we know that (3a + 4b) is even. Therefore to make (3a + 4b) + b even, b must be even.

I would go with C.

Statement 1 says...
3a+4b is even--> here clearly 4b is even and we can have 3a+4b even only if 3a is even...so it gives us 'a'as even but v cudnt find b..so its insufficient...

Statement 2 says
3a+5b is even.... so either both a and b are even or both are odd.
Again its insufficient....

But if we combine both statements we see a is even from statement 1....so from statement 2 it follows that b is even...
Hence answer C.

The alternative explanation is, that since both 3a+5b and 3a+4b are even, their difference is also even so 3a+5b - 3a -4b= b, so b is even.

Hi Puys,
THe following are a few DS questions from OG 12. They are not present in OG 11.

1.In college X the number of students enrolled in both a chemistry course and a biology course is how much less than the number enrolled in neither?

1) IN college X there are 60 students enrolled in a chemistry course
2) IN college X there are 85 students enrolled in a biology course

This one is simple. E should be the answer.
Insufficient data.

2. For which type of investment, j or k, is the annual rate of return greater?

1) Type j returns $115 per $1000 invested for any one-year period and type k returns $300 per $2500 invested for any one year period.

2) The annual rate of return for an investment of type k is 12%

Consider 1st statement:
(PT)* R
is directly proportional to SI.
We can get the ratio of Rj/Ri and hence we can decide which one is greater.

2nd statement: Not useful as it talks only about K.

Answer : Only Statement A alone is sufficient.

3.A citrus fruit grower receives a $15 for each crate of oranges shipped and $18 for every crate of grapes shipped. How many crates of oranges did the grower ship last week?

1) Last week the number of crates of oranges that the grower shipped was 20 more than twice the number of crates of grape fruits shipped.

2) Last week the grower received a total of $38,700 from the crates of oranges and grape fruit shipped.

This one is also simple... Both statements are required to solve this.

4. If Pat saved $600 from his earnings last month, how much did Pat earn last month?

1) Pat spent 1/2 of his earnings last month for living expenses and saved 1/3 of the remaining

2) of the earnings last month, Pat paid twice as amich as in taxes as he saved.

Statement 1 is sufficient.
Using ratios it is clear that savings/earnings= 1/6 ...so we can find the answer.

Statement 2... Taxes??? no use..

Will Post other solutions too..
Hi Puys,
THe following are a few DS questions from OG 12. They are not present in OG 11.

5. The charge for a telephone call between city R and City S is $0.42 for each of the first 3 minutes and $0.18 for each additional minute.A certain call between these two cities lasted for x minutes, where x is and integer. How many minutes long was the call?

1) The charge for the first 3 minutes of the call was $0.36 less than the charge for the reminder of the call

2) The total charge for the call was $ 2.88

This is a sitter...

Simple equation:

total charge= 0.42 +m*0.18.

Now according to 1st statement:
0.42=2*(reminder charge for m minutes ) -0.36
Solve this to get m.

According to statement 2:
2.88=0.42 +m*0.18.

Solve to get m.

Each statement Alone is sufficient.

6.If car X followed car y across a certain bridge that is 1/2 mile long, how many seconds di it take Car X to travel across the bridge/

1) Car X drove onto the bridge exactly 3 secs after the car Y drove onto the bridge and drove off the brodge excatly 2 secs after the car Y drove off the bridge.

2) Car Y traveled across the bridge at a constant speed of 30 mph.

Again a sitter...
Its clear that each statement alone is insuficient.
We can calculate the time for X using both the statements...

Both are needed.

7. Is the integer odd?

1) the sum of P, P+4 and P+11 is even
2) the sum of P-3 ,P ,P+11 is odd.

2 alone is sufficient
p-3+p+p+11 =Odd
3P+8=Odd
3P=Odd

This implies that P is Odd.

Now consider 1.

3p+15=even
this means 3P=odd

So 1 also sufficient.

EACH alone is sufficient.

8. What is the maximum number if rectangular blocks, each with a minimum dimensions of 12 centimeters by 6 centimeters by 4 cms, that will fit inside the rectangular box X?

1) When box X is filled with the blocks and rests on a certain side, there are 25 blocks in the bottom layer.

2) The inside dimensions of Box are 60 cms X 30 cms X 20 cms

2 alone is sufficient.

9. if the sequence of S has 200 terms, what is the 192 term of S?

1. The first term of S is -40
2) Each term of S is 3 less than the preceding term.

Sitter: Both are needed.

10.What % of dram club members enrolled at a certain certain school are female students?

1) of the female students enrolled at a the school , 40% are members of drama club.

2) of the male students enrolled at a school, 25 % are members of drama club
