a year ago even it thought that i'll need the wren and martin to crack the GMAT english - This is a myth
The point here in GMAT is not to know every thing but to know all that is important. Besides you do not want mug up all that Grammar rules. Just learn the strategy from one of the prep books (I 'd recommend Princeton and Kaplan 800).
GMAT English is a type on its own. Dont try to understand it in deep. just know the strategy.
Avoid all kind of exhaustive prepping.

Hi Rajat,
thanx for the advise... where do i find the PG rules??? and wat does "snip" mean???
NO Probs, This is a place for the rules
http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/for-newbies-the-hitchhikers-guide-to-the-pagalguycom-superway-25008927
I dont think this is the only one floating around. Allwin must have kept some other thread for it as well. Can't recall where it was. This place is so damn big!!!
'SNIP' is a phenomenan that will occur when you dont follow the rules.
That part of the post, or the entire post itself, will be deleted aka 'SNIPPED'

Dear Rajat,
Thanks for sending the link... I am reproducing the relevant portion of the posting rule below.
"Rule 3: Strictly no personal phone numbers allowed on the forum. Except in certain threads thou shalt not display your e-mail id either unnecessarily. You can use the Personal Messaging facility for those purposes."
The rule prohibits "unnecessary" display of the email id but does not define what constitutes "necessary" or "necessicity". So it has left the reader/writer to have their own. interpretations.
What do you say? In fact it would have been a weird rule had it suggested a ban on email id sharing without exception. I am sure the intention is to prevent people from abusing the other person's privacy by unnecessary spamming or similar stuff. But this very topic "GMAT prep material" suggests that the people who are the members of this thread (ie active on this thread) are here for a purpose which is not obviously spamming.
The question that i have raised here may be debated by a few and i am open to any debate provided it has a purpose. And i invite people to express their views on the same if they wish to.
Regards,
Abhay Dhawan
PS: Sorry for deviating from the core topic of this thread. For people who find this debate/ topic irrelevant and "unnecessary", please accept my apology in advance. Inconvinience is deeply regretted.

Hi,
"GMAT English is a type of it own" - I like this statement really!!! :)
It seems that u've given words to my thoughts. Actually i 've completed Kaplan (basic) this week itself but always felt that something is missing as far as verbal section goes.
Frankly speaking i am messing up the English bit big time :(. I need to do something about it; sooner the better.
Hey ppl any suggestions??? I am not good at cramming and stuff. I want a book/ material which explains the concepts with examples. Once i know the concepts i would like to practice as much as possible. Thats the way i understand things. Guess most ppl do that way. But i am having trouble wid GMAT English since i am unable to find the "concpets" at any one place. So ppl, request u to suggest a book which clears concepts and would serve as a ready reference for GMAT preparation.
Some ppl in this forum have rated Kaplan 800 to be a complete devastating experience. It made me fishy and so i dint buy the book. Since u seem to recommend that book, i want to ask you and other ppl who agree wid u that "what is the best thing abt that book in your opinion"???
Could someone please suggest the "smart way" to crack English section??? It would be a great help. I need a strategy as to how to go about English part. So what do the GMAT gurus suggest??? 😃
I need a buy-in from some ppl regarding the following strategy for English which i intend to follow:
1. Kaplan (basic) - already done so can't really change this
2. OG 11 - Intend to buy after going thru most of the threads
3. Base reference book for English for concept clarity which can be referred if i have any doubt on the explanations
Optional: Kaplan 800 - Intend to buy subject to positive responses
So junta, pls help!!!
Warm regards,
Abhay Dhawan
Hi Iday,
I am overwhelmed by your strategy... I would like to add that its pretty DE-motivating as far as i am concerned... I am actually a beginner to this whole thing... In fact read through most of the educating posts on this forum... Only here i got to know tat there is hell lot of material available apart from what i knew :)...
I never thought that one had to do Kaplan, Princeton, Kaplan 800 and the OG... I really wanna know how much u scored in the actual exam so that i can do some benchmarking for myself as even if i wanted to do all that u mentioned i wont find time; thats a certainity... i am targetting fall' 06 and have registered an exam date in Aug end...

Abhay Dhawan
Overwhelmed??? Nice to hear
There are loads of material buddy - u shud decide on how much u want to use. The point is that there is no point in simply doing material after material. So it is upto u to decide how much is enough for u. I could have still addedd the Manhattan material, but i dint want to. I could have no bought the OG Math and Verbal books - but i did. I wanted to do all these and so i bought all these. Work on a fixed plan as to what kind of prep u want, then go search for the books that suit ur purpose and then decide on the books. dont go by any list. It might not help u 😃 If ur unclear abt the kind of stuff these books offer, i guess that i've explained in my post.
My score??? I got a 750 (Q50, V41, AWA6). But that does not mean all the people who use these 6 books will score as much. Ppl with more books have scored less and ppl with less books have scored more. To each their own. So - no bench marking stuff :)
you say u have limited time. so i wanna add that i slogged for more than 2 months with these books at the rate of atleast 2 hrs per week day and around 10 hrs per weekend day. Do the math and decide whether u can afford it. The rate at which u grasp things is a key factor too - u might be faster than me and hence wont need all that time to do the whole stuff :)
The OG is indispensable (though some might disagree). Apart from that what books u shud use is ur call. Happy prepping and keep asking ur doubts

Hey Iday,
Thats a great score man... So whats the plan ahead...??? What schools u targetting??? Or is it that u r shortly joining a course in some ivy league stuff... 😃 Tell me something about the workex - profile - etc.
I can't afford to slog that way... that much i know given the stringent work hours... Now as far as deciding on the material i intend to study, i have posted a scrap earlier stating my Eng Strategy on which i have asked ppl to comment. So do comment on that as well...
I am not a believer of simple hard work... I always try to work the smart way... :)
Coming to this site was a good decision as i was not aware of so much of available stuff in the market... I have downloaded some random stuff from various places but i am not too sure whether i'll do it ot not... Its my hobby to gather stuff :satisfie:.
Having said that, i reiterate that i am not undermining the stuff i've gathered!!! Yet i, as a matter of principle, prefer referring to standard books :). And the same has worked for me all the time uptil now...
Please comment on the Kaplan 800 query also that i've raised...
Warm regards,
Abhay Dhawan

For abhaydhawan
Boy ! there is not fits to all strategy for GMAT Verbal
Here are some pointers though that might help
SC
Start with the Princeton/Kaplan 2006
Pay attention to their strategies Specially on SC. They are good.
Start practicing a lot of SC questions. As you practice them you will find your own strategy. Learning the rules wont help much because what you need is a better startegy to locate errors and correct them asap. On your practice test, pay close attention to the answers (every answer explanation. even the ones you got correct. Its imp to know the reasioning behind the answer )
Search around this thread, people have posted links to othes's SC notes and idioms. That will be handy.
RC
Nothing can help as much as voracious reading. Nevertheless, Princeton/Kaplan has good Strategy. Read Read Read !!
CR
Again the same thing Princeton/Kaplan
Practice !
The key to verbal is to have your own strategy which you can develpe only with practice.
Hope this helps:neutral:

Hi ,
I am new to Pagalguy and this is my first post. I would really appreciate if someone can help me by answering these questions.
1) Where can I get the Princeton review tests ? The Princeton review 2007 edition comes with at DVD but it doesn't have any tests.
2) Where can I get the Kaplan tests ? Is there an link from where I can download ? I checked a few bookstores here in Bangalore but I couldn't find the Kaplan CD.
3) Please suggest the bookstores where I can get these CDs.
Thanks,
Ravi.
