but i have a doubt, perhaps a silly one, in Q2.
the probability of (a,b) being in Quadrant-I = 1/4
however, after that, for a,b in Quad-I , aren't there 3 possibilities...
a>b
a=b
ab = 1/3 (and not 1/2)
and the final answer becomes 1/12 ( instead of 1/. Now I understand that in this question, 1/12 is not an option, but if it were...what would be the correct answer?

thanks again,
Shipra

A = B and A
If this doesnt convince u, let me give u another argument. U said "the probability of (a,b) being in Quadrant-I = 1/4", right?? So, u agree that there are 4 quadrants only? Which quadrant does (0,0) lie in?? If as per ur A=B argument, if we give 0,0 special preference, then it should have its own quadrant. So, are there really five quadrants with the probability being 1/5???? πŸ˜ƒ
Here's one more...

Ron gets into an elevator at 11th floor and starts going up at the speed of 53 floors/minute. Ally gets into another elevator at the 51st floor which starts coming down at a rate of 63 floors/minute. At which floor will their paths cros??

I am sorry but I dont remember the answer options (this was in one of the Kaplan tests I took)

More interested in the method really, since I remember I couldnt match any of the options.

thanks,
Shipra

after 10 secs,
Ron will descend approx. 9 floors...hence, he will be at 20th floor
Ally will descend approx. 10 floors..hence, he will be at 41st floor

after further 10 secs,
Ron will be at 30th floor
Ally will be at 31st floor.

so the answer is somewhere around 20 seconds...

Between the 11th and the 51st floors there are 40 floors.

The combined speed of the elevators is 53+63 = 116 floors per second. Hence the time taken to travel 40 floors in this combined velocity is 40/116 seconds.

In 40/116 seconds, the first elevator would travel (40/116) * 53 floors which is approximately equal to 18 floors (17.8 something). Adding 18 to the initial 11 (the floor from where it started), we get 29. Hence, they would cross each other at the 29th floor.

here's another ( I thought this was a simple...till I got the answer wrong 😞 )

Q19. A certain credit card company pays a bonus to each of its customers, upto an amount of $10000. What is the maximum amount of annual bonus, in dollars, if the following is the bonus percentage distribution of the company?

$0.01 - $1000 0.5%
$1000.01 - $3000 1.0 %
$3000.01-$6000 1.5%

Is it B??

Herez how I got to B..

(1000*0.5/100) + (2000 * 1/100) + (3000 * 1.5/100) + (4000 * 2/100) = 150.

Q.6

the goal is the salesman should have his total income after 7 weeks = 3500
now, in the first five weeks, his total income = 2070..so in the next 2 weeks, his income should be 1430 to reach his goal...
average weekly C = $150..and his avg. weekly needed to reach his goal = 365...so he needs to raise his C by $115 per week....now, 15*8 = 120...hence, the approx percent increase = 176%...answer is C...

hope it helps...

hi ajay,

just to point a small error u made in the 6th question
total income in 5 weeks = 2070 total income that he shud make in the last 2 weeks = 1430

remove the 2 weeks 350$ to arrive a combined value of C at 730 for 2 weeks which means the avg sits at 365 $ per week
avg. C in first 5 weeks = 64

raise = (365-64)*100/64 > 470%

so the answer is E.

hope it helps..

Hi Vikram,

Thanks for your answer. It is B. Can you please tell me how you arrived at this calculation though?? I mean, 3000 is in the 1% slab, (not 1.5 as you have taken) and

can we not simply say the total amount spent = $10000
so the maximum balance = 2% of 10000 = $200 ??

thanks,
shipra

Shirpa,

The 3000 doesnt refer to the amount. I think you have misunderstood the question. The question states that for the first 1000 dollars, you would get x% bonus. From 1001 to 3000 y% bonus and such. So, we cannot say that the max balance would be 2% of 10000 because he is willing to give the bonus of 2% only for the money between 6000 and 10000.

So, for the money between Rs.1 and Rs.1000, u get .5 %.. Hence, 1000 * .5%
For the money between Rs.1000 and Rs.3000 (worth 2000) u get 1% .. Hence 2000 * 1%
For the money between Rs.3001 and Rs. 6000 (worth 3000) u get 1.5%.. Hence 3000 * 1.5%
For the money between Rs.6000 and Rs.10000 (worth 4000) u get 2%. Hence 4000 * 2%.

Putting them all together, u will get $150.

Vikram

Hi,

Here's another problem

The inside dimensions of a rectangular box are 6 inches by 8 inches by 10 inches. A cylindrical canister is to be placed inside the box so that it stands upright when the closed box rests on one of its six faces. Of all such canisters that could be used, what is the radius, in inches, of the one that has maximum volume?

A)3
B)4
C)5
D)6
E)8

Also attached is a zip file containing a few more of my doubts from one of the prep tests.
The correct answers for those questions are marked within the screenshots by a square around the correct choice.

Any help would be great! I am sorry if the questions have been posted before.

the volume of cylinder is given by pi*r2*h
if the circular part of the cylinder rests on the 6x8 face, max. dia = 6 inches, height = 10 inches...volume = 90pi

if the circular part rests on the 6x10 face, max. dia = 6 inches, height = 8 inches...volume = 72pi

if the circular part rests on the 8x10 face, max. dia = 8 inches, height = 6 inches...volume = 96pi

hence, max. volume is achieved when dia = 8 inches, radius = 4 inches..answer is B.

using st.1 alone,
since PS is parallel to QR, the greater the angle of the line, the shorter the length...length is shortest when angle = 90 degrees and length increases as angle decreases...
hence, we can conclude that PQ90...in this case, PQ>SR
but
x=70,y=60 also satisfies the condition and in this case, PQ
not sufficient.

hence, answer is A...

Q.2

if he travels at 17 feet per second, in 1/2 hr, he will cover 5.79 miles.
if he travels at 18 feet per second, in 1/2 hr, he will cover 6.13 miles.
st.1 is not sufficient.

using st.2 alone,
if he travels at 17.8 feet per second, in 1/2 hr, he will cover 6.06 miles.
if he travels at 17 feet per second, in 1/2 hr, he will cover 5.79 miles.
st.2 alone is not sufficient

using both st. together,
if he travels at 17.8 feet per second, in 1/2 hr, he will cover 6.06 miles.
if he travels at 17 feet per second, in 1/2 hr, he will cover 5.79 miles.
both st. together are also insufficient

this is simple logic..lines OP and OQ form a right angle between them..imagine line OQ to coincide with Y axis and line OP to coincide with X axis.. in this case,
x-coordinate of pt.P = -(y-coordinate of pt.Q)
y-coordinate of pt.P = x-coordinate of pt.Q (which will be zero)

if u slowly rotate the lines keeping them perpendicular to each other, u will notice the above equations to follow always...hence,
x-coordinate of pt.Q = y-coordinate of pt.P
hence, value of s = 1

answer is B.

st.I is satisfied

when x=1/5, y=1/4, z=1/3
st.II is satisfied

when x=5, y=-2, z=-1
st.III is satisfied

hence, answer is E.

Q.6

after 6% increase
Jack's wage = 15.9$ and mark's wage = 10.6$
diff = 5.3 $ per hr
the diff. remains constant for any value of Jack and Mark = Jack-5.
st.1 is alone sufficient

using st.2 alone,
assume Jack's wage = 4$ per hr and Mark's wage = 3 $ per hr
after 6% increase
Jack's wage = 4.24$ and Mark's wage = 3.18$
diff = 1.06$ per hr

when Jack's wage = 12$ per hr and Mark's wage = 9$ per hr
after 6% increase
Jack's wage = 12.72$ and mark's wage = 9.54$
diff = 3.18 $ per hr
hence, diff. varies for diff. values of Jack and Mark=3/4Jack.
st.2 alone is not sufficient.

Hi Vikram,

thanks for your answers. all of them (as always) are correct! :)

for the 1st question though...

what is the reason that neither you (or the book for that matter) considered the case where max. dia = 10 in and ht. = 8 in . In that case the volume will be 200pi. Am I missing out some property of cuboids or some basic concept here as per which a face 8*10 is not possible ??

thanks for all your answers,

Try fitting a 10inch cylinder into a 6inch opening.. πŸ˜ƒ If the dia is 10in and the ht is 8in, then the other side of the rectangular face is 6in.. Obviously a 10in cylinder cant enter thru a 6 in opening! πŸ˜ƒ

shipra, if u look carefully for the name of the person who's given the answers, u ll find tht its meeeeeeee!! neways, doesnt matter as long as it helps u...

as for ur doubt, for an 8x10 inch face, max. dia = 8 inches cuz if the dia = 10 inches, then the cylinder wud hv to cut thru the cube .. hence, max dia = 8 inches..
