At exactly what time past 7:00 will the minute and hour hands of an accurate working clock be precisely perpendicular to each other for the first time?
Ans:240/11 minutes past 7:00

Let milk, chicken and aples be represented by M, C and A respectively.
Given n(M)=0.25x, n(C)=0.5x, n(A)=0.35x
Given percentage of shoppers who buy all 3 items is 0.1x, where x represents total size of shoppers
Let a,b and c represent %age who buy both milk and chocolate, milk and apples and and chicken and apples respectively.
Only milk = 0.5x-(a+b)
Only chicken= 0.4x-(a+c)
Only apples= 0.25x-(b+c)
Adding up all
1.15x-2(a+b+c)+(a+b+c)+0.1x=x
hence (a+b+c)=0.25x

OA=25%

I am unable to understand '-2(a+b+c)+(a+b+c)'. If we add all the equations wont we get just -2(a+b+c)? Why we have to add (a+b+c) again? Can you please explain this for my understanding? If possible, please also explain how would the equation look like....while finding out the percentage for 2 or more products.

Hey plealse help me with this problems.....(from IMS CAT 1)

A student worked without interruption to complete a 2-part test in 1 hr.If he completed the first part in 1/2 the time it took him to complete the second part,how many minutes did it take him to complete the second part?

i think it is very simple and answer should be 40 minutes.
But the answer given is 36 min.
and the explanation is:

let student complete the first part in x min,and second in y min.
then,
x + y = 60
and
x=2/3 y

but i think.... x=1/2y

please help.....

Hi

Just hoping that someone can help me with this question from Princeton Practice Test 1

A man chooses an outfit from 3 different shirts, 2 different pairs of shoes, and 3 different pants. If he randomly selects 1 shirt, 1 pair of shoes, and 1 pair of pants each morning for 3 days, what is the probability that he wears the same pair of shoes each day, but that no other piece of clothing is repeated?

A) 1/(3^6 * 2^3)
B) 1/(3^6 * 2)
C) 1/(3^4)
D) 1/(3^2 * 2)
E) 5 * 1/(3^2)

The correct answer is C). Please include a short explanation in your attempt.

Thanks!

Karan

hey Saurabh.Daftary if the language of question as you haev mnetioned the your explanation is right and answer will be 40 min. can you check the question once to confirm if first part takes 1/2 of second or one and the half of second.

i hope u understood hw i arrived at expressions for "only milk', "only chicken" and "only apples"
Now if u add up the three expressions u vill get %age of ppl who bought only chicken or only milk or only apple. (In a Venn diagram represented by 3 intersecting circles, this portion corresponds to the region that exclusive only to milk, apples and chicken)
Now, for the intersecting regions:
Both milk and chicken = a
Both milk and apples = b
Both chicken and apples = c
Region common to all 3 circles = 0.1x (since 10% buy all 3 items)

Now add up for union of the 3 circles
Only milk+only chicken+only apples+Both milk and chicken+Both milk and apples+Both chicken and apples+All 3items
u vill get an expression
1.15x-2(a+b+c)+(a+b+c)+0.1x
Equate it to x to find the value of (a+b+c) since this region corresponds to %age who bought only 2 of 3 items.
hope i'm clear this time.

Let the time taken to complete the 2nd part be x
Hence time taken to complete 1st part = x/2

Given x+x/2=1
x=2/3 hrs i.e time taken to complete 2nd part = 40 min

a 2^19

has to be 2^19
x1=3=2^1+1
x2=5=2^2+1
x3=9=2^3+1

x19=2^19+1
x20=2^20+1
x20-x19=2^20-2^19=2^19*(2-1)=2^19

k=(x/x+y)(10) + (y/x+y)(20) = (x/x+y)(10) + (y/x+y)(10) + (y/x+y)(10)
=((x+y)/(x+y))*(10) + (y/x+y)(10)
=10+(y/x+y)(10)

hence, option 1 is ruled out as anser has to b >10
now, since, y>x, y/(x+y) >1/2 hence, at
when y/(x+y)=1/2 k=10+5=15
=> k>15
hence, option 2 and 3 are ruled out
also, y/(x+y) hence, k cant be 30
thus, k=18

the ans i posted for thisques was wrong...it has to b 11000
the approach shud be to minimise the populatn(p) for one of the districts while maximising it for the remaining 10....i.e. the remainin 10 districts shud hav equal populatn
also, keep this fact with you...the avg populatn of the 11 districs has to b 132000/11=12000
goin by the options...
when p=10700...max populatn of other districts=1.1*10700=117700
obviously, when this is the max populatn...the avg has to b less than this...hence, it is this option is ruled out
similarly, for option 2, max populatn=1.1*10800=118800...ruled out
now, check for 11000, max populatn=1.1*11000=12100
hmm....check the total pop now...12100*10+11000=132000....fits !!...hence, the correct ans

tiled area/untiled area=25:39
tiled area/area of countertop=25:(25+39)=25:64
let the side of the square tiled area be a
now, for the first option, if the untiled width is 1.5 the side of the countertop =a+2*1.5=a+3
i.e. a^2 / (a+3)^2 = 25/64
i.e. a/(a+3)=5/8
solve this, u get a=5
similarly, solve for option 2 as,
a/(a+6)=5/8
u get, a=10
for option 3, a=15

hence, all the three options fit in

i guess there's nuthin in this ques! once, u realise that u have to square the options and check the divisibility by 72
and mark the smallest number as yr answer
6^2=36....not divisibl by 72
12^2=144....divisibl by 72
hence the answer has to be 12

Let the time taken to complete the 2nd part be x
Hence time taken to complete 1st part = x/2

Given x+x/2=1
x=2/3 hrs i.e time taken to complete 2nd part = 40 min

but the doubt asked here was the relation in the time take in first and second part...............
i got the answer as 40 but as per the doubt asked it was coming as 36 .........

hey, this was the shortcut i postd....but if u wna really ponder over it's validity...try it this way...
1^2=1...not divisible by 72
2^2=4...not divisible by 72
...
11^2=121...not divisible by 72
12^2=144...divisible by 72
so, n=12 and n^2=144

now, get bk to the ques...wha r we askd?? the greatest no. which divides n....
isn't it vry obvious that the gr8st no. dat divides n has to b n?

hence, the answer is 12...do revert if still in doubts
