1. A new fast growing strain of yeast cells reproduces every two minutes. Thus, one yeast cell becomes two yeast cells after 2 mins, four after 4 mins, eight after 8 mins and so on. If one newly divided cell is placed in a rectangular vat 6 inches by 8 inches by 12 inches, and after one hour, the vat i full of yeast, how long did it take to fill half the vat?
A) 15 min B) 24 min C) 30 min D) 48 min E) 58 min
arch, is it 6 or 8 min.....if it is 6 i think 58 min....wats OA?
This is infact one of the simplest questions..just looks tricky!!
we are given that the cells reproduce after every 2 mins...in other words, they DOUBLE after every 2 mins...so, if a tank of ANY size gets full after X hrs/days/mins/secs, it must be half filled at X/2 hrs/days/mins/secs cuz after 2 mins the cells will double up and fill the entire tank..
we have been told that the total NET income returned after 10 yrs is equal to the original 41400 which means after deducting the expenses from the gross income, the group got 41400 in hand...now, we know tht expenses accounted for 25% of the gross income..to put it in simple words,
grossincome-25% of grossincome = 41400 so, 0.75 x grossincome=41400
As total no. of cells in hour is 2^30 and if we have to calculate just the half filled box. the it will be just two minutes before an hour as after 2 minutes it will get doubled.
Scoring the 90th percentile among 80 students implies the following:-
There are 70 students who scored lesser than Anna There are 10 students who scored more than Anna
We have also been told the following:-
There are 19 students who scored more than Anna Therefore, 100-19 = 81 students scored lower than Anna
Total no. of students = 100+ 80 = 180 Avg Percentile of Anna among all the students would be sum of the two percentiles obtained by Anna divided by the total number of grades or students = (70+81) / 180 = approx 85th percentile.
Plz correct me if i'm wrong!

Yes, the OA is 85 percentile..it would be gr8 if someone gave the explanation :)...thanks in advance
I just ate dinner at a fancy restaurant, where it is customary to give a tip to the waiter of between 12% and 18%. If an acceptable payment for a meal including tip would be no less than $40.88, how much did the meal cost before the tip?
Another one I just ate dinner at a fancy restaurant, where it is customary to give a tip to the waiter of between 12% and 18%. If an acceptable payment for a meal including tip would be no less than $40.88, how much did the meal cost before the tip? a )$34.64 b) $35.55 c) $36.50 d) $39.00 e) $38.28
Answer should be b) 35.55. Is that the OA ?
If base amount + tip = 40.88 then, the percentage increase from base amount to 40.88 should be between 12 - 18 %. For making it easy to solve, take a value which lies in mid of the given 5 options, in this question its 36.50 and add 10 % to this value and add both of them that is equal to 40.15 so adding 12% will be definitely more than 40.88. So, Base amount has to be less than 36.5.
35.55 is almost 15% less than 40.88. So, that will be the answer.
Option A was very close, that makes you do more calculations.

The answer is B.
X + X *(12/100) = 40.88 .. solving for X --> $36.5
X + X *(18/100) = 40.88 . solving for X --> $34.644

From where you got these questions, are they from a test ?

no less than $40.88 which means that the minimum tip be 12% of the meal cost....hence
X + X *(12/100) = 40.88 .. solving for X --> $36.5
@Dopa
I got these questions from an online sample test i took at
Answer: 35.5..the answer has to be in between 40.88/ 1.12 and 40.88/1.18..hence, 35.5

I) so if x 0, implies y has to be positive. II) by your reasoning x/y > -1 can be arrived at III) (1/x) + (1/y) = (x+y)/(xy) --> we know (x+y/y) >0 and x
I did not understand how it can be III.
In term of II (x/y) > -1
Here's my reasoning
0 so -1 Simplly moving +1 to the LHS. Not changing signs as you are moving a value not flipping the signs.
Can you explain how III is valid and confirm if my reasoning on II is alrite ?
