In (A) and (B0, modifier is an issue. IT being used for HOMES. so A & B can be eliminated.
(C) usues correct modifier but looks verbose.
(E) Avtive Voice intp Passive Voice.... which is not called for.
So, (D) seems to be the correct one. Pl give OA

Hi Amsey,
Here "making do" is idiomatic means "going for". If one can look option-D and E. Option-D "used" made correct sentence formation, whereas Option-E is in passive. Option-A,B,C all looks inappropriate.
cheers !

the sentence contains the restrictive clause.therefore,it should contain 'that'.Hence options B C D go out ...
Option E has some problems ( though it eliminates the restrictive clause problem) : a)it does not convey the idea.
b)the sentence looks weird when 'there is' is repeated.
c) the flow also does not seem to be correct...Hence choosing A
PS : read somewhere that sentences begining with 'there is' are mostly incorrect in gmat.
apologies that i don't remember the source.
Q.The central issue before the court was how far the regulatory agencies should go in requiring better working conditions in factories.
a. in requiring better working conditions in factories
->1
b. as far as requiring better working conditions in factories
-> don't require as far as in the sentence.( PS:the second word is 'far' )
c. in their requirement that factories should have better working conditions
-> modal 'should' seems to be repeated.
d. as far as requiring that factories should have better working conditions
-> same as C
e. to require factories to have better working conditions
->2
this one is a real toughy! π I am not sure of anything in this question.
of 1& 2,
1 seems better....as it maintains the ing form ( to go with working )
2 also looks good ....again maintains parallelism.but the only flaw i can see in this is that can the factories themselves do the needful? i.e. kinda personification

IMO A.
Only A quantifies the agreement. Not the best of the options, but the rest are incorrect as well.
Q.The inhabitants of Somalia greeted the measures outlawing polygamy with a similar defiance that welcomed the prohibition of alcohol in the United States in the nineteen-twenties.
a. a similar defiance that welcomed
b. a similar defiance which welcomed
c. a similar defiance to what welcomed
d. a defiance similar to that which welcomed
e. the same defiance welcoming
IMO A.
B,D use which. C uses what not idiomatic. And E uses welcoming indicating a result.

a. a similar defiance that welcomed
b. a similar defiance which welcomed
c. a similar defiance to what welcomed
d. a defiance similar to that which welcomed
e. the same defiance welcoming
good one..
answer must be one of option A or option D.
"a similar defiance that welcomed" is un-idiomatic.. "a similar defiance" in incorrect uage..
"a defiance similar to that which welcomed" though wordy, it makes sense.
I would have marked option D
