IMO B. Here the proportion , which is half of total spending , is being compared. D & E straight away out because which refers to 1992. C out because "they" if refers , if anything, to costs. "it was" in A is redundant.
Curious to know the OA.
Faulty comparison problems trouble me a hell lot :( More of such problems from you guys will be very much appreciated.
conflict with OA.. share your thoughts..
Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election. A. a greater proportion than it was B. a greater proportion than C. a greater proportion than they have been D. which is greater than was so E. which is greater than it has been
IMO E. I found other options quite easy to eliminate because of the use of "begun" w/o "has".
1.An attempt to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, begun almost two decades ago, has been unsuccessful despite efforts by many important groups, including the National Organization for Women. (A) to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, begun almost two decades ago, (B) begun almost two decades ago, for ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (C) begun for ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment almost two decades ago (D) at ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment, begun almost two decades ago, (E) that has begun almost two decades ago to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment
almost everyone marked option B as answer... only Darth Maul got it matching with OA..
@Darth Maul could you please share an explanation?? the OA is option C, but I am not convinced.. I would love to know the basis behind option C..

A. a greater proportion than it was B. a greater proportion than C. a greater proportion than they have been D. which is greater than was so E. which is greater than it has been
a) .."it was" seems not correct. c) they have been - they doesnt have a clear reference.does it refer to televesion costs?. d) "so" - incorrect
left with b & e. i think if e) were like which is greater than it has been in it would have been a good answer choice. will chose b.
IMHO b.
pj02 Says
B should be the answer, comparison : televisin costs in the presidential campaign of 1992 and in any previous election.
"Soaring television costs" = plural "spending in the presidential campaign of 1992" = singular Q1- The pronoun refereence in non-underline portion refers to what as a subject? It's clear that, it refers to the later one as it talks about the proportion.. So C is out---X E (E perfect here but in present, should ideally be HAD)...X D----X (SO..does n't go in context, i was late SO i didn't come is something right usage) My take is A: as it completes the sentence like spending in the presidential campaign of 1992 IS a greater proportion than it was in any previous elecetion Oranges to Oranges, My take 'IT' is needed here..
C
a greater proportion than they have been (accounted for) ...
The underline phrase is modifying soaring television costs.I think C is the most appropriate.use of have been suggest the continouation of tel..costs in campaign. D/E are straight away out bcoz of which. A is out bcoz of IT.I thnk costs require plural.
which- pronoun refers to 1992-so usage is wrong eliminate D and E. it -usage is wrong-eliminate option A. they have been -usage is wrong. My ans is marked in bold.
IMO B.
"It" is singular and the costs is plural. so A is eliminated D,E which refers to campaign. C uses pronoun they. so incorrect
IMO B. Here the proportion , which is half of total spending , is being compared. D & E straight away out because which refers to 1992. C out because "they" if refers , if anything, to costs. "it was" in A is redundant.

B is out because of it compares previous elections with television costs spending in 1992 D is out as it uses was which doesnt go the verb to account for in any form. also 'which' pronoun here will refer to the closest noun '1992' C correct pronoun they ..television costs is plural.. have been (accounted for) in any previous election (upto 1992) ..correct tense action started earlier and still continues..

IS it a good idea/way to write such sentences (with one modifier and a subject and object in main clause) in reverse way:
a greater proportion than it was in any previous election, Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992 Becaue if the sentence was written in this fashion, every one would have picked up the 'C'...without any confusion? what do you say DARTH?
flipping is a good technique, but works best when the modifier is NOT identifiable easily.. should be avoided in normal sentences, as it might lead to change in meaning of the original sentence..

I'm getting confused, Precisely when to prefer Gerund (+ing..) over the placeholders like 'WHICH' e.g... According to scientists, the extinct river Saraswati, which ran from punjab to rajasthan, was one of the largest river in the world OR According to scientists,The extinct river saraswati, running from punjab to rajsthan, was one of the largest river in the world
Amsey, for the above I would pick first one. Here "running" is not a gerund but a verb. And I usually expect a simple past verb to follow the present continous(in above context) For example: I reached office , running all the way. "reached" took place after "running". A simple past showing the result of "present continuous".

PLease do Soooooooooooooo..................
I got something to share:
c. after verbs of perception in the pattern: verb + object + present participle Example: I heard someone singing. He saw his friend walking along the road. I can smell something burning! NOTE: There is a difference in meaning when such a sentence contains a zero-infinitive rather than a participle. The infinitive refers to a complete action, but the participle refers to an incomplete action, or part of an action.
Compare:
I heard Joanna singing(= she had started before I heard her, and probably went on afterwards)
I heard Joanna sing(= I heard her complete performance)
g. to replace a sentence or part of a sentence: When two actions occur at the same time, and are done by the same person or thing, we can use a present participle to describe one of them:
They went out into the snow. They laughed as they went. They went laughing out into the snow.
He whistled to himself. He walked down the road. Whistling to himself, he walked down the road.
When one action follows very quickly after another done by the same person or thing, we can express the first action with a present participle:
He put on his coat and left the house. Putting on his coat, he left the house.
She dropped the gun and put her hands in the air. Dropping the gun, she put her hands in the air.
The present participle can be used instead of a phrase starting as, since, because, and it explains the cause or reason for an action:
Feeling hungry, he went into the kitchen and opened the fridge. (= because he felt hungry...)
Being poor, he didn't spend much on clothes.
Knowing that his mother was coming, he cleaned the flat.

For the first one, the answer i guess should be B A is ruled out because "but it ran .." seems odd ('seldom' and 'but' dont seem to come together in the sentence) C is ruled out because what "It" refers to, isnt clear D is out because "wilderness of upstate New York, which connected...", here 'which' refers to New York, but it should actually be referring to the canal E is out for the same reason as D
For the second one, I feel the answer is D Activtating the animated features is an action performed by the visitors (plural), so the verb usage should be "activate" not "activates". This rules out A,B and E. C option's reference to 'it' is ambiguous. So the remaining option is D, which I feel is correct

Seldom more than 40 feet wide and 12 feet deep, but it ran 363 miles across the rugged wilderness of upstate New York, the Erie Canal connected - the phrase 'seldom..deep' is modifying adjective and is separated from the noun 'the Erie Canal'

exhibit, which thereby activates - which refers to exhibit which is incorrect
exhibit, in turn an activation of - wordy
exhibit, and it will activate - too many antecedents for 'it'
exhibit and thereby activate - gives a sense that tourists activate... where actually 'touching the exhibit' is causing the activation
exhibit which, as a result, activates

Tough ones amsey :D
My take is 1) B 2) E
when which is used as a relative pronoun.. it refers to the noun immediately preceding it and not the action of the entire preceding clause.
so incase of Saraswati it is preferable according to GMAT to replace gerund
IS it a good idea/way to write such sentences (with one modifier and a subject and object in main clause) in reverse way:

IMO here , it is not the costs that are compared but the proportion of the television costs.
television costs -- half of the spending in campaign of 1992 , this proportion is compared with the proportion ( television costs as a percentage of spending ) in any previous election.
i think B is fine. using 'they' for television costs .. is awkward..
