GMAT Sentence Correction Discussions

broadcast is always plural..

A. each modifying broadcast is wrong.
B. all modifying broadcast is wrong.
D. same as A.

of C and E, 'as when' is better than 'if' because 'as when' is correctly used here to refer to an instance of a case(example).. i may b wrong here but i'll still go with option E.

you got it buddy.

Though what I am trying to discuss here is if "broadcast" is plural then what is "the three major networks each" doing here? "each" denoting a singular. Pardon my understanding.

it's juz one of the sick grammar rules..

plural + each -> plural verb
each + plural -> singular verb

for examples,
each of my wives is beautiful.
my wives each are beautiful.

Good & crisp explanation. Thanks.

I think there should be "Gotch Ya" button along with a "Thanks", when we understand the explanation properly. I give you a "Gotch Ya" for this one.

Unlike birds, which are highly sensitive to atmospheric pressure, people have found that paragliding require the use of a variometer since detecting thermal currents are impossible using normal human motion sensitivity.
a)that paragliding require the use of a variometer since detecting thermal currents are impossible using normal human motion sensitivity
b)the use of a variometer crucial for paragliding since it is impossible to detect thermal currents using normal human motion sensitivity
c)that paragliding requires the use of a variometer since detecting thermal currents are impossible using normal human motion sensitivity
d)paragliding to require the use of a variometer due to the fact that detecting thermal currents is not possible with the use of normal human motion sensitivity

  1. "that paragliding require" Incorrect. should be "requires. So all the options with "require" eliminated.
  2. correct- going with the parallel structure of the non-underlined part - Unlike birds, which are highly sensitive to atmospheric pressure people have found the use of a variometer crucial for paragliding....
  3. grammatically correct; the structure is not parallel to the non-underlined part. though I am slightly taking my chances with choosing 2, especially when I have this affinity for wrong choices when I am left with 2 to choose

  4. eliminated for the reason in 1 and more like "paragliding to require the use" ungrammatical

  5. "since detected thermal currents" changes the meaning incorrectly.

I understand. Just kidding.
When I was of your age, which was not too long ago :)...if I had tried posting it would be thrice or maybe not at all..with the kind of networks we had in those times.

i can see a small error in option B.. juz remove the 'which' part.. look only on the bold text.. it looks as if birds have not found the use of variometer crucial but people have..

so i guess option B cant be the rite answer..

nothing wrong wid option C though.. (time 2 go 2 bed.. )

Not sure if I got your point correctly.
were you hinting at - "unlike birds...,people have found..." meaning the birds can not find anything anyways (so it does not make sense)....BTW
I am laughing while writing this.

Actually after reading your explanation I gave a 2nd thought to option 3. And was looking for any possible errors in option C. I believe there is(are) always more than one difference(s) between(wrote 'in' before) the correct and incorrect choices.

Here is what I caught:

since detecting thermal currents are impossible - should have been
"since detecting thermal currents is impossible".
So based on this logic I think I will stick to option 2.

Hope I got it this time.

There is nothing wrong with C

A -> Subject-verb non-agreement - :Paragliding- require.

B-> First error is infinitive "to detect" is not parallel to participle "using" then to preserve the original meaning of sentence which is comparing birds and peoples in terms of their sensitiveness towards atmospheric pressure during flying. B seems to compare both birds with people in terms of paragliding- "use of a variometer crucial for paragliding".

C -> It restores the original meaning of sentence. Paragliding requires variiometer which removes the sensitivity of human towards atmospheric pressure. Moreover participle"detecting" and using are parallel to each other

Why D and E are wrong has been explained earlier too.

Hey " detecting " is acting as an adjective here modifying the noun- currents, which is plural so usage of are is absolutely correct. Detecting is not a subject here.

Hi Anurag,
The auxiliary verb should refer the verb "cutting".So I guess Cutting is a bad idea is correct.

Thanks for your expalnation. You did put the explanation very nicely with your auxilary verb thing.

BTW, I was just replying to the post at #7526 by my earlier post that you quoted. (Ok, really confused here: "...that you qouted or that you have/had quoted.")

I will have to go with the smokinskull86 dude on this one.
In the sentence "
since detecting thermal currents are impossible using normal human motion sensitivity". How can "detecting" be an adjective?
I found a simple rule for checking if its an adjective; check this out.

Essentially, the purpose of an adjective is to answer the following questions:
  1. How many are there?
  2. What kind is it?
  3. Which one is it?

"detecting" is definitely a verb here. And in layman's language it specifies an activity.
