Gre 2013

Hello guys, I have done BE in Mechanical Engg. and am working in Raymond for 2 years now. I have just started with the GRE prep and am aiming to take GRE by Oct 13. I have started with quant from Tata McGraw hill for CAT. Am I on the right track?? I also needed material for RC and verbal prep. Where can I get it online?? I am also planning to join classes IMFS from June. Will my working experience also help me in getting preference? Any other suggestions/Guidance are also welcome.

I scored a 332 on my GRE, and this is what went into it. (By the way you are free to slaughter my advice if you find controvertible points! ;D)

This was the impasse when I was about to take my GRE. I had recently quit my job as a GET in a certain construction company (placed while in NIT Dgp), and I had screwed up GATE 2013. (Found out the hard way that studying 20 days for GATE can only manage to help you clear the cutoff by 0.87 marks. ;D)

I decided to take GRE while returning from my GATE centre.
I started in a maverick fashion, buying the Norman Lewis Word power. My English has been pretty decent from school, and I found the book a lovely addition to my repertoire. The book is indispensable to anyone who is trying to grapple with the Verbal section of GRE. My advice, get it ASAP!

Meanwhile I ordered Kaplan General test book, and it reached on the 24th Jan. I also had my uncle's Barron GRE test book (about a year younger than me, his book. ;D) and I began tackling the word list.
About 3700 words, took me about 58 days to complete. My advice : Know the word list like the back of your hand. The more you know, the less you slip up.

There is no substitute to practice. I started off with the Big Book, no matter what people tell you about the pattern having changed, it gives you priceless practice! And you practice with every standard material you get your hands on! My batch mate, who scored 319 mailed me Princeton practice book, 1014 questions and I tackled Verbal and Quantitative from there as well. It is important for engineering aspirants to score 167 plus in Quant, because the Grad schools look closely at your Quant score (and A.W). I practiced probability and PC and stats (my nemesis) from books at the HS level (though that was attributed to my personal vendetta against the three, and you needn't go that far ;D). Then there was my Kaplan general book as well. It gives you a very objective view on how to tackle Reading Comprehension questions (total killers, you should know) and Text completion questions. It is an amazing book. For a book to be good it needs to come alive and talk to you. Kaplan is that good.

I took 7 full length practice tests. (4 timed, 3 un-timed)
I began on the day my GRE book arrived and I scored 327, on the diagnostic test.
In the last fortnight before Judgement day, I took 6 more tests, scoring : 327, 327, 334, 323, 327, 327; the last one on the night before (don't do that, it freaks you out if it isn't good!) Kaplan's online partner (5 full length tests offered free with the book; just go online!) was real helpful.

88 days later on 19th April, I scored 5 marks more than what I had gotten on my diagnostic test. I scored 162 on verbal and 170 on quantitative and a 4.0 (not too good) in my A.W; for a total of 332.

P.S : There were times when I wanted to end my misery(you are free to infer ;D). But then I thought, oh what the heck, I paid 10k to take a test, let's do it!

And please DO NOT FREAK OUT!!! I was freaked out before GATE and I screwed it! Prior to GRE, I actually told myself "It's gonna be dad's money the next time! There's always a second time, if I screw up today ;D" And it helped.

Never ever give up. There will be times when you will face adversity and you won't have anything to bank on. I am still jobless and I haven't yet applied, which leaves me with nothing, still. Life will always open up new vistas for you. I want to believe that. 😃 Love, God bless!

-Cheers!

Is there a flow chart type timeline diagram for people aiming for fall/spring admissions for MS in US?

It would be really useful since we get a picture as to when to start studying, what documents to be processed , when are the end dates for sending profile to Universities etc.

So I finally took the GRE yesterday and I'm still feeling light headed, thanks to my verbal score. While I was expecting to score in the 160s, a 167 was definitely a very pleasant surprise.

Although I was very good in GRE Maths (I guess that goes for most engineers), GRE Verbal was really proving to be my nemesis. When I started my prep I was told by colleagues and experts alike to focus on vocab as the GRE vocab is really tough. Now I've always been good at mugging up so the first thing I did was cram the Barron's word list. Took me about 2 months to mug up almost all of the near 3500 words, but mug them up I did!

Given this background it came as quite a shock when I scored a paltry 150 in my first mock test (Powerprep 2). While RC was definitely a problem coz I've never really been in the habit of reading, it was surprising that I was also making mistakes in Text Completion questions, and not because I didn't know the word meanings but because I couldn't properly comprehend the meaning of the sentence itself, especially in those long 3-blank TC questions.

This was sometime in the end of Jan, and I spent the next 2-3 months only focussed on improving my comprehension skills. In addition to practicing RC passages, I also started doing a lot of general reading in terms of newspapers and magazines such as the Economist, the Hindu, etc. I strongly recommend that all of you who want to improve your verbal focus extensively on improving your comprehension skills. You will be surprised to see the impact this has on the so-called vocab questions (especially TC).

Two books that I found very useful in my prep were the Manhattan 5 pound book and the Aristotle GRE Verbal Grail. The Verbal Grail probably has the best RC coverage of all the books out there in terms of both theory and practice passages. For vocab I really don't recommend mugging up 3000-4000 words. The only place where vocab actually helped me was in the Sentence Equivalence questions but they come the least on the exam. It's better to refer to a shorter list of high frequency words as available in the Manhattan or Aristotle books. For tests I used Manhattan and Powerprep 2 and found them very good. In fact my scores on the last 2 or 3 practice tests were pretty much in sync with my actual GRE score.

Feels great to at least have one burden off my back. Now I'll take the TOEFL next month and then start working on my SoP. Wish everyone on the forum luck with their prep!

Cheers.

hello everyone.

im a metallurgy student and my cgpa is 6.22. this year im giving gre but im concerned about the university because of my pointer. is there any kind of fluctuations in employment after pursuing the course in this field. what is the general scenario?
thank you..

TOEFL is easy though, almost child's play compared to the standards required by GRE. 😃 Scored 116. 😃

Hi,

I m planning to give gre in August...
