Demonetisation: Pros & Cons
Backdrop: high value currency denominations featuring Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were banned effective 8 November midnight by PM Narendra Modi in a televised announcement, primarily owing to reasons of “black money” & “terror-funding”.
(a) 86 % of the total money circulation wiped out from the system ·
(b) Encouraging Cashless Economy ·
(c) Coming along with several reforms like early budget rollout, GST implementation, IDS Scheme, bankruptcy code & benami Transaction Prohibition Ammendment Act 2016.
So let us come straight to Pros & Cons.
Pros:
Ø Moving towards Cashless Economy, will widen govt’s Tax base thro’ vigilant monitoring of transactions.
Ø FDI might increase substantially, in coming years owing to a check at corruption across the country.
Ø Criminal cases of theft/ robbery etc will reduce. Funding to ‘extremist organizations” will become difficult.
Ø Election Funding to become more transparent.
Ø Illegal funding in ‘real estate’ & ‘gold’ will take a dip thus lowering the prices. Ø End of Counterfeiting & fake currency racket.
Ø Transparency in “Anonymous Funding” to NGO’s & other such grs. Reduction in “Hawala” transactions.
Ø Surge in banks CASA ratio, thus bailing them out of NPA problem.
Cons:
Ø The pain of “masses” can be seen outside banks. People are dying in queues, hospitals etc
Ø Poor Infrastructure to support “Cashless Economy”.
Ø Reduction in GDP/GVA by around 2% owing to sharp decline in Informal Sector.
Ø Increase in Prices: Because of Transaction Charges through online payment.
Ø Introduction of “Rs 2000” note will increase corruption effectively.
Ø With 2nd largest POP & such high illiteracy rate, it will add to the misery of 26% POP living below poverty line.
Ø Huge amounts of Black Money are kept in “SWISS Banks” not in cash “AT Home”.
Ø There is no country in the world which limits the withdrawals.
Verdict: It is a “BOLD STEP” but with “POOR EXECUTION”. Reasons:
a) The preliminary estimate of Govt for wiping out around “ Rs 5-6 lac crore” (Black + counterfeit) is thrown out of window. With conversion in Gold, illegal use of Jan Dhan Accounts, flexibility in some state (like UP for land transactions) etc the estimated amount of Rs 14-15 lac crore will flow back to banking system. (90% already have flown in, rest are assumed in remaining days)
b) The logistical management of currency is completely shattered adding to the woes of Common Man. Infact till now, except few political gimmicks we haven’t seen any “ELITE” class to be “queuing up” in line.
c) Banks are not passing the benefit of such high deposits to customers. They have clarified that the “Interest Rates” will be lowered only post “Deliberation” ---- So nothing immediate.
d) Cases of huge amounts recovered in New Currency Notes are recorded, thus hitting the claim of Government of ‘day to day’ monitoring.
Conclusion: The step taken by Government is “Too Good but Too Early” to have. With such large population of below poverty line people, prevalent illetracy, narrow financial inclusion etc. there should have been some kind of Schemes introduced by the govt earlier (it wont have affected secrecy of this activity) like
Ø Mass distribution of “Smartphones” either free or at Subsidised cost (ex: UP & TN state govt did this, so no legal issues)
Ø Encouraging Cashless Transaction through rewarding per transaction etc
Ø Dispensing Rs 100 notes from ATM’s across country atleast 1 month earlier
If better planning would have been done for it's smooth execution, then this would have proved to a "Benchmark for Master Strokes" in Good Governance.
Thanks.
Do work experience help in interview?
I have a query. I reside in a rented house so I've give the address of this home as temporary as well as permenant address as I've no permanant place of residence so no permanant address. Do IBPS demand any ID Proof regarding the address proof because I've shifted to this house few months ago and I don't have any documents which corresponds to the place of my residence. Also I'm a 2015 passout and I've a provisional degree certi. Is it neccessary to produce a degree certi. only or provisional will work out?
