Hi rakhi what is your %ile.........

people with Balaned score have got d call from IIFM even at a bit lower overall scores like in 80s or 75+(with experience n gud academic records) as well. I think probably you might have got less than 50-55%ile in one or other section and so not got GD/PI call from IIFM... if this is not the reason then there might be some other problems like form might have not been recieved by IIFM or any other..

n Please dont be frustrated dear... not getting call from IIFM is not the end of everything.... there is something better for you.... so enjoy life.... n best of luck for other GD/PIs....

CAREER IN FOREST MANAGEMENT
Forest administration came into existence in India during the later part of the 19th century. Forest management was meant for regeneration of some useful species like Sal, Deodar, Teak etc. Management practices were mainly conservation oriented and were primarily meant for meeting the local needs of timber particularly in rural areas. The onset of World War II had an impact on forestry practices and artificial plantations were raised on a large scale. The forests became the victims of GROW MORE FOOD campaign by putting up land for agricultural use. The Government set up the National Commission on Agriculture, which suggested for evolving a proper forest management.
The concept of forest management requires sound policy and planning. Forest management is the practical application of scientific, economic and social principles to the administration of a forest estate for specified objectives. The basic task of Forestry is to secure maximum and continued values from the land meant for forestry. Forest resources are the attributes of forest land, which are put for the welfare of human beings. Forest management involves the control of composition and the structure of the growing stock; harvesting and marketing of forest produce/ products; and administration of forest property and personnel.
There is immense scope for forest management in India. Two essential assumptions are vital in forest management- it must be dynamic and it must change according to situation. The growing tree is a symbol of nations prosperity. The standing trees make growing stock and this is capital in real sense. Trees take long time to be utilized for end uses. The trees of poplar can be harvested at a rotation of ten years, whereas the trees of Deodar may take about 200 years for its harvest.
Intensive forestry practices must be used to increase productivity of forests. It will help in meeting the demands of industry, communications and the local people. Social forestry must be encouraged to meet the demands of the local people. Agro-forestry should be encouraged to establish a sustainable land management system which could improve the existing system quantitatively and qualitatively, capable of deriving long term benefits, reduce environmental damage practically feasible and socially acceptable to the farmers. Agro-forestry has a number of advantages. It maintains soil fertility through recycling of nutrients, prevention of soil erosion and loss of nutrients through leaching and runoff. The management of forests should be to maintain the eco-system in the long run and in the interests of the people.
A Skilful Art

Forestry is the science of managing forests. A person who is responsible for managing and caring for a forest is called a forest manager. There are many different kinds of forests in India and the job of managing forests is complex and requires a range of skills.
The sort of knowledge and skills required of a forest manager into next century include:
  1. Forest botany and ecology the identification of forest plants and animal species and the classification of forest communities. This includes the study of how plant and animal distribution is related to factors such as climate, soils and terrain.
  2. Silviculture the science of growing a forest (planting, tending and caring for a forest) and managing the forest to meet clear objectives.
  3. Forest protection the safeguarding of a forest from fire, the attack of insects, fungi, feral animals and from damage caused by climatic events such as wind, rain, snow and drought.
  4. Forest survey, assessment and measurement the survey of forest areas and forest attributes. This involves taking measurements to determine the population and distribution of forest species, tree growth rates, timber volumes and the most suitable location of forest boundaries and roads.
  5. Forest management the preparation and implementation of forest management plans that identify forest values and how these values can be maximised. Forest values include the biodiversity of plants and animals, soil and water quality, timber harvesting production, recreation facilities, regional employment, Aboriginal sites and storage of carbon.
  6. Planting new forests Planting and managing new planted forests to provide environmental services such as storing carbon, controlling salinity and enhancing biodiversity, as well as timber. This is a growing area with 10,000ha of new plantation established each year.
  7. Harvesting and marketing knowledge of the marketing conditions of timber and other forest products. This involves analysis of the costs and returns for different forestry operations, including timber harvesting, road construction and fire control, the determination of prices for forest products and the supervision of harvesting operations in forests.
  8. Forest engineering the construction of roads, buildings, water supplies and other structures and their maintenance. This includes an appreciation of the equipment used to carry out these works and the servicing required for such equipment.
  9. Forest accountancy oversight of the collection of revenue from the sale of forest products and the control of expenditure associated with all forestry operations. This also includes measuring and accounting for the carbon stored in new forests planted to offset greenhouse gas emmissions.
  10. People management the management, training and safety of employees and contractors working in the forests.
  11. Law a knowledge of the legislation which regulates and controls land management and protects the environment
