International educational options beyond the MBA

hi all.i have been a passive member for a long time.this is my first post here.so here goes

i am planning to apply for Msc from manchester.
i have gone through their website about the min. requirements.
i have a cgpa of 9 and i will be giving my IELTS soon.
realistically what cgpa & IELTS score is needed for MBS?are there any additonal requirements?
also are the chopras the best people to contact for the admission procedure in delhi?
regards

Dear Baccardisprite and fellow Puys,

I'm a BE graduate in ECE with 4.5 yrs of IT experience (retail domain)
with a Software services company (TCS).

I would like to shift my area of work to Product development.
Though not interested (and nil exp) in software product devpt, my interests are to work in the area of design and development of consumer-friendly innovative products like consumer goods, electronics etc (any marketable general merchandize) or in the area of research where cuting-edge technologies are played around (nano tech, Computer-brain interface etc).

My dream role is to manage any product development firm or research lab
(as said above) wherein I would like to understand the customer needs,
analyse market, provide best innovative solutions as a team and also manage - new initiatives, supply chain of new product and the financial part.

Companies like 3M & NASA interests me a lot..I'm not specific about any geography for working or for higher studies (Ok with India or abroad).

Could you please answer the following?
1. What are different roles that are availabe in the job market
matching my interest? How good is this domain in terms of job prospects and salary?
2. How can I attain my aspirational/dream role?
3. Should I go for any specific course in Product development? What are the study options available (India or abroad)?
4. There is a Masters degree in Product Service System Design offered by
Politecnico Di Milano, Italy (www.polimi.it). Also TU Delft offers some courses in design.
Any idea about this school / course and its future prospects?

I'm eagerly waiting for your response. Kindly reply. Thanks in advance.

The objective requirements are exactly what're stated on the school's website. The subjective requirement is of course that you make a strong case for your admission there through a set of clearly articulated essays about what you want to do with your career and why the MSc from MBS is the program that will help you.

Who are the experts who told you there's no value for an MSc or MA after or during a CA? What was the rationale for such advice.

The concept of b-school without experience is a very Indian concept and has very little merit (if at all) outside our shores.

With no idea of what you want to do with your career or the reasons for the "time constraints" you mention, near impossible for any one to give you actionable insight or valuable advice. You seem unsure of what you want professionally.

CA Articleship / Associateship, as long as undertaken full-time (and paid for) can & should be counted as full-time experience.

Think a little more and post again with more specific information, and you'll get help.

Excellent set of questions!

1. Product Development means different things to different companies in different industries. In certain industries, R&D; and product development are used interchangeably. In others - product development is the function which:

- Either designs products or services around customer / consumer need
- Or executes / manages the engineering & trial manufacture of product or service, finally overseeing its launch before handing over the daily management / sales of the product to the appropriate functions
- a combination of the above

The people who get these jobs are "normally" 7-10 years experienced and have a combination of operational / supply chain or R&D; and marketing / franchise and sales jobs under their belt.

Clearly, a sought after position in engineered product, and manufacturing focused industries including FMCG, Tech hardware, electronics, life sciences etc... Salaries are competitive and for the right candidates (experience and profile) can cross six-figures.

2. One scenario is to be patient, search around job sites to see if you can make the interim move into even a software / design using software focussed product development job (product / service engineering). Try getting into a more client facing role and see if it's possible for you to get more commercially focused experience. Try also to look for friends in your network who are in jobs with product development / product management elements in them.

In this scenario - try and gain experience before further education and you have something valuable to take to your new employer.

3. This is your other option and your second scenario - if you can swing a good GMAT / GRE, build a compelling rationale for your career and get good academic and professional references - MIT's Engineering Systems degree would be my top pick and recommendation. Have a look at esd.mit.edu

In the next 1 to 1.5 years, learn a foreign language.

Hey, thanx for ur reply 1stly.
2ndly yes u understood well that I am quite unclear with regards wat I wanna do exactly. I'd say that I am just confused with regards how to get wat I wish to do.
Let me frame it down to you my thots. It'd actually help me too to streamline my thots n help me to get my head straight.
Basically CA is smth I just hppnd to do. It was never wat I wanted to do. But that doesn't stop me from doin it or be motivated to do it. Its not that I don't like it. But its not smth I see myself doin in the long run. I am doin my articleship from a reputed CA firm. I have the knowledge of work. So work experience if counted is well and good because by the time I apply to colleges I'll hv 3 yrs of it. 2ndly I am looking to do smth that is dynamic which involves Application of mind, innovative, exciting and which requires me to do smth new each time. So as far as I c it marketing and stategy is smth I wld fit into.. I would want to make it my primary focus and CA can be an add on which wld help me obvioiusly in wateva I do.
time factor ---I am a 21 yr old gal. I am pursueing my CA. BY the time I finish my CA I wld b 22 or 23. After which I start preparing myself for MBA or Msc colleges. And by the time I get into 1 it'd be 24.
However if I am goin in for an MBA which requires work ex and dsnt count articleship as experience then I'd hv to work till appx 25 and then try for colleges,it wld b late for me to study considering Indian principles of getting married by 26-27..
It would be great if u could throw me a few questions which would help me find out wat I really want if wat I rote still makes u think tht I am not sure of wht I want.
Thank you once again

Hi..!! though not addressed to me.. but still would like to throw a torch....!!

Definitely you are not very clear about what you want to do.. but I am telling you.. you are not alone... though don't have statistics.. but I guess you will find a whole crowd going ahead for MBA abroad.. with the same mindset..!!

fiist of all.. I appreciate.. you have designed a very well "gantt chart".. for the coming years... and as you have mentioned.. cos of personal bindings.. you can't go ahead waiting for some substantial WE.. before doing an MBA...now, this is where you have to decide... understanding properly the difference between Msc and MBA:

MBA: it's more generic.. and emphasis the practical approach of doing the business.. that's the only reason why you need WE prior to joining an MBA.... they combine case studies.. presentations.. and internships.. more often.. thn the theory.. and text studies.... the classes are more about experience sharing....definitely.. it is widely accepted by the employers and a better preferred degree......!!

Whereas Msc:
Unlike MBA.. it's more into research... text studies.. emphasising more about the theoritical and conceptual details about the business.. !! Most of the time.. Msc degrees are specialised.. and it's prefered too... the course duration is slightly longer.. and the job profile and package may drastically vary as compared to an MBA.. keeping in mind that MBA specifically aims at entertaining the Employers with demand for highly matured.. and people with prior experience...!!

All in all.. going for an Msc.. would be a sensible advice.. making sure.. you choose a specialised course that suits you.. and the college.. which provides not just decent post Msc employment.. but also.. a nice blend of subjects and activities to choose from..!!

hey
leo30.. thnx for rplying.. as far as i can get frm wat u wrote.. mba is more like an on the job kind of the thing while an Msc is more abt knowing and understanding the field in books..

ok now wat i want to no is.. an Msc and MBA are bothconceptually same but pratically different.. so an MSc... will hv no work ex.. so wat r his career prospects?? seems like wen an MBA n MSc stand opposite each other an MBA is preferred..for obvious reasons.. so how fruitful is it to do an MSc..

wat kinda job profiles to MSc ppl hv..

obviously if i study abroad i'd work der for 1-2 yrs.. but wat abt job prospects in india..where most of the ppl link MSc to be only sm science field..
do rply soon
ll be waiting
thanx:cheers:

Hey Baccardispite,
First i'd like to start of by thanking you on the great work your doing on this thread . Ok my question now is this ...i'm doing B.Tech (Mechanical Engg) right now and i'll be graduating in april-may 2010 . I was kinda playfull in my first two years in college due which i created some backlog . Now i've almost cleared all of them but the trouble is that my gpa is gone down . So when i'm graduating i'll most probably have a gpa of 6.87/10 . I know this is really bad . But what really worries me is that this is going to limit me from getting into some good Mba (Finance) program . I've decided that i'm gonna start preparing from next month and give my level 1 cfa in december 2010 just after i graduate.Plans after that would include working for two years and preparing for CAT-GMAT simulataneously. My questions are these

a) will be a B.tech graduate be able to manage to prepare for cfa level 1 by december 2010 and clear it and is it a wise desicion ??
b) should i take two years to work and prepare on my GMAT ?? cause as far as CAT and indian business schools are concerned i'm dreading the "why are your acads so low??" question...so i'm thinking of applying abroad too ...what i want to know is if my gpa will impair my chances of getting in there too ?? Do i have a chance in getting into any of the top ten business schools if do i gmat well ??
c) is there anything else i should be working on besides writing my cfa and gmat ?? as far as extra curriculars are concerned i really don't have much ..i plan on learning a language and i have a diploma in animation and modelling

Any and all help that you guys may give me will be deeply appreciated :)
Thanks in advance
P.s - i'm 21 years old right now and i'm really worried about the time factor too

Hey guys ! Myself Ayan. I just gave GMat this sunday and i scored 650. So pls tell me with this score where can i apply within India and Outside India ?? Outside India which universities would be best option to apply with this score. Or should i go for another GMat exam ?? Pls give me some suggestions........ thanx in advance.

I suppose you mean to say you want a career in Finance, which if true - then good focus at 21.

Get a job anyway immediately after graduation, try not to leave gaps in your career. You're young, your mind is fresh and body willing, so work and study for your CFA Level I. Get employment, hopefully in a financial services institution or an IT or other company servicing financial clients or a BPO having a large client base of financial institutions and learn the ropes where / when you can. Work there while preparing for your CFA.

If you're pretty determined to get into a financial career, then target a specific Masters in Finance in 2011, like an M.Sc in Corporate Finance / Financial Economics / Econometrics and or Decision Sciences. UK Schools like LSE, Cass (City U), Imperial College, ICMA Reading are known as very good training grounds for early career finance aspirants. Those Masters degrees along with a CFA which you will gain while working in the future (next 3-4 years) should set you up well for a finance focussed career.

Develop employable skills alongside your finance & quantitative skills and experience. Learn a language (like French, German etc..) and make yourself attractive to your future employer.... think long term !!!!

Good luck

Firstly - I believe you're underestimating the skills and value a CA brings to the table, secondly if you worked your articleship full-time i.e worked with clients and got paid a salary for it (even a low one), then it's experience, period. Don't let anyone try convincing you otherwise. Finish your CA - get employed with a proper accouting / advisory / financial firm, work for 2-3 years, then think further on what you want to do. In this time, learn a foreign language and develop critical skills, career progress and a bank of achievements all employers will value later on.

Employers always value education, experience, and applicable skills.

As for marriage, don't worry - PLENTY of professionally minded young ladies like yourself attend MBA and other Masters program full-time AFTER marriage (some after having kids). You just need to practically ensure the partner you find (whenever) understand your aspirations, respects your dreams and allows you to go forth achieving them.... Remember, even a lady like Indra Nooyi credits her choice of partner as the single biggest reason for her success..... no reason why you can't do the same.

All the best.

Please read the websites and previous posts on MIT programs! The answer is yes - these are technical & managerial programs. You take the GRE or GMAT as the program requires.....

One thing though - your profile appears interesting, would advise working for 2-3 years longer, building a bank of applicable skills, career progress and achievements, then target a focused program that can take you into strategic roles in the energy industry.

Good luck

Hi baccardisprite,
I have gone through most of the posts within this forum....Awesome work sir!!! I would like to introduce myself as a B.E. Electrical, passed out in the year 2003 and since then working which makes my work-ex to 6 yrs...Out of 6 years....I have 1 year experience in Project Execution, 1 year in Sales,4 years in Product Development (Switchgears)...(Out of the last 4yrs, 1 yr I was in the Middle east). All the experience has been gained in 4 different companies and the companies are well known and market leaders in their respective fields....and about my academics...I can say I was an above average person with 79% in SSC & HSC and 65% in B.E. Now seeing the lucrative options and avenues that open up after doing MBA, I am looking forward to a program which would benefit me to help encash my previous experience and help me grow faster in the Industry.....(Although excelling will depend on my likings and my dedication towards work, but I am looking forward to a right platform (Right Univ) through right means MBA/MSc,etc..).....Will my expereince in different fields and differenct companies be of any disadvantage to me in getting into some good Univ??? I am planning to give GMAT by March 2010 and will be aiming at 700+.....Considering my experience... I feel operations,SCM,Marketing are the fields that I should specialize into....I would like to have ur comments/suggestions on the same plz....Request to please suggest some B-schools/Univ with good ROIs and giving special consideration to expereince and that to in the field of Core Engineering........

Thanking you.....

Awaiting your reply.....
