It's back! -[2008] Ask ISB-Hyderabad: Admission Director answers your queries!

Dear Sir ,

I had a query regarding the TOEFL score submission.

Sir , though English was the primary language of instruction during my undergraduate studies, I really wanted to submit my very strong TOEFL score. Presently in the application the toefl score submission section is only visible if one clicks on the radio button that states primary language of instruction was not english. Can you please let me know where in the application can I add this detail?

Thanks and Regards

Bnahse,

We will not be considering your TOEFL score while processing your application. Any extra information can only be mentioned in the Optional essay.

Admissions Team
Thank you very much for your reply.

I am appearing for CFA level 1 in Dec. Should I mention this in the application form? If yes, in which section of the application form?

Mbaqueries,

If you want you can mention this in the Optional essay.

Admissions Team
Dear Mr Menon,

Thanks for this purposeful thread and the pains being taken in clarifying on wide range of issues.

1. As part of the scholarship application, we need to upload the Income proof of the spouse and parents. My father was a mason long back and now a home-maker. My spouse is a home-maker too. Hence, they don't possess any income proof as they don't have any active income.

How to explain this as there is no filed to mention the same.

2. I am working for a PSU, where a lot of intangible monitory benefits, such as unlimited medical care expenses, are not reflected in our Salary. We can mention Gross Salary by multiplying one of the recent month's Gross Salary. We can't mention the CTC as there are no official documents to support. But, just mentioning the Gross Salary may act negative as the figure is not that Big.

Please advise the course of action.

Thanks in adavnce.

Ramkit,

1) Please say Not Applicable in both cases.
2) Please mention the Gross Salary, the figure need not be big.

Admissions Team
Dear Sir,
Thanks for taking this initiative of replying to the querries of the candidate.
I have the following querries regarding the application:
Experience Section:
1. I have been working with my current employer for the past 7 years (ever since my graduation) except for a period of 2 months (spanning Feb-Mar 2005). I had essentially moved to another company but returned to the first company within few weeks. I am planning to explain it in the optional essay.
Should I still give my employment details in 3 parts? (or) Can I project my career as a progression in the same organization?
Awards Section:
2. Awards section is allowing us to cover patents in that section. Are we expected to give the details of each patent as a separate entry?
In that case, if the total number of awards (including patents) is more than 6, how do we give these details?
3. Can research publications be covered under the awards sections? Can awards received at the workplace be covered under the awards section?
Essays section
4. Second Essay (About the speech)
Are we only supposed to target the "General Student body?
(Or) Can we assume the existence of some other body with some specific purpose and target the same? This could help us in projecting our skills in a more apt form.
5. Optional Essay
Does it need to have a central theme? (Or) Can it be used to list down different unrelated aspects of our application / profile?
Thanks and Regards,
Sarat

Sarat,

1) Please explain your employment details in three parts.
2) No, you need not give details of the patents.
3) Please mention the research publications in the Optional essay. You can mention awards received at the workplace under the awards section
4) It is entirely your decision who you target in your essay.

5) The Optional essay need not have a central theme. You can list down different unrelated aspects of our application / profile

Dear Admissions Team,

What is the acceptance fee to be paid in case of an admit? Further, is the amount different for candidates wishing to avail Married Housing Facilities?

I tried to search online as well as the brochure but was unable to find the same. If there is any online resource I may have missed out, would you please share the URL?

Hi,
I am from the IT sector (2004 IIT Kharagpur passout) with 4 years work - ex. I gave the GMAT recently and got 680 ( AWA - 6.0). I wanted to apply in round 1 but after going through this forum I am confused since It says avg score for IT pool is 730. Will my score not be too less then to be considered? Should I retake GMAT and apply in Round 2?
Will be glad if you can help me out

Sir,

I have a question on the Job Achievements under "Employment Details" section:
If I were to list down 3 top achievements, there would be duplicate information in Achievements/Awards/Essays sections. So, what would be your advice: List down the TOP three or use this section to write down the achievements that are not covered anywhere else.

Thanks

Mission_mba2009,

You can repeat your Top 3 achievements.

Dear Adcom,

I have one particular question about extracurricular activities.
I have been following stock markets for a long time and for last two years, I am an active investor. Can I cite it as an extracurricular activity?
I don't have any certifications for it, but once I gave practice NCFM (By NSE) test and got a decent score. Will this certification (If I have it) add some value to my application.

Thanks,
Sravan

Sravan,

If you wish you can mention this in the Optional essay but not under extra curricular activities. NCFM certification might add some value to your application.

Admissions Team
Hi

I have the following questions while filling out the Application

So here goes

1) This is regarding the Education details
In each of the section for education details, like for the 12th or undergraduate, there is a box at the bottom - gaps in education. Is this for highlighting any gaps during the engineering course or 12th standard?

If suppose i graduated in 2002, but started working in 2004. Would i need to mention this somewhere?

2) This is About the evaluators
a)
I want to assign my evaluations to my two previous managers. My current managers response may not be good if i mention my future plans. Is this fine ? Will this effect my application? Will it carry the same value?

b) How much time would it take an evaluator to fill out the application? What would be the format of the form? WIll he need to write out lengthy essays etc?
I am asking all this because this question was put to me by one of my potential evaluators, since he said he has limited time to do this. Hence it would help me in giving him a heads up of what is expected from him.

c) One of my Evaluators has since quit her job because of personal reasons and is now a home maker. In this case i will not be able to provide an official id, but i can ask her to provide her credentials of the work experience. Will this be fine? Do i need to talk to the Admissions office in regard to this?

Thanks in advance
Krishna

Krishna,

1) Yes, the text box is for explaining any gap years in education. You will have to explain about the period from 2002-2004.
2) It is acceptable to us. We completely understand that some employers might not take your future plans in a positive light.

3) A sample of the evaluation form is available in the application. If you click on online evaluation, you will be able to see the link for the same.
4) Please choose offline valuation in her case and explain the reason in the Text box provided on that page.

Hello Sir,
Thanks a lot for addressing our queries.
I have a few queries:
1. I am doing a certification course in Corporate Finance, in collaboration with Macmillan India and IIMC. the course is slated to be over by January. so i do not have the certificate right now. where should i mention this? should i add this in the additional data, and tick the not yet completed checkbox?

2. i work in PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt Ltd, and i draw a bonus component at the end of each financial year. the percentage of the bonus varies from 10-20% of the gross, based on one's performance. how should i show this?

3. Also, in our organisation, there ia a concept of reimbursable flexible benefits(RFB), according to which one claim a portion of their gross tax-free, by claiming that portion against telephone bills, medical bills etc. now, the part of the RFB which is to be claimed as tax-free against such bills, that part of the RFB needs to be declared at the beginning of each year. aa a result, the salary slip does not show that part of the RFB is not shown in the salary slip. that RFB is claimed against the bills as and when the bills are produced. the unclaimed part of the RFB will be returned to us at the end of the fin year, as a taxable component. So, my salary slip will show a figure lower than my actual gross. What do i do in this case.

4. i am planning to take an NCFM certification test either on 12th Sep, or on 16th Sep (depending on availability of seats). if i take it just after 15th but before the interview dates, then how should i put it in my application. in case i take the test on 12th sept, i will not be getting my certificate before 15th sep. So what should i do in that case?

I know that i have a long list of queries. It would be really helpful if i could get some insight regarding the same.

Thanking you,
With Regards,
Sumedha

Sumedha,

1) You can mention this in the Additional Education and tick the not yet completed checkbox.
2) & 3) Please state your CTC figure only. Bonus figure is not required.
4) If you plan to take the test after the deadline, then explain about this issue in the optional essay. In case, you take the test on 12 September, you can still explain the absence of a certificate in the optional essay.

Hi guys,
Don't know if you missed my thread or think its too common a question but I would reallly appreciate your feedback. My scaled GMAT scores are as follows
45 - QA and 38 - Verbals. I have talked to people and they feel since I have a strong quants background (being from IIT), ISB will consider my verbals and AWA score more so my 680 shouldn't matter. But it would help coming from you guys
Do help me out...and soon.. thanks in advance

Dear Adcom

1. Could u please tell me what was the average, minimum and maximum GMAT scores for the current PGPX batch from army/defence background...

thanks.

Alok

Would it be possible to record the "Global MBA Dream" event being held in Hyderabad and post it on YouTube?
It would be great to see an official YouTube channel maintained by the ISB adcom. Great way to reach out to students abroad.

Alchemist,

We already have an official YouTube channel maintained by ISB. Please visit the link www.youtube.com/isbindia.

Havethewill2008,

If you think that you have an exceptional profile, then you may apply in Round 1. However, it is entirely your decision since you know what the averages are.

Admissions Team
hi sir
1. previously on this forum you have said that the period spent in IMA post graduation can be considered as work experience if a certificate from a competent authority is available. who would you consider as competent authority? for officers who have after completion of the training got commissioned into the defence will it be counted as work-ex.

2. there are a number of courses that the services conducted, and have their own grading system these course are primarily professional. However these cannot be entered in the professional education as they dont have any degree,CGPA system nor are they affiliated to any university.Other than the optional essay is there anywhere that we can reflect them.

thanks

Makingithappen,

We need a certificate from the Incharge/Director of IMA. Regarding the CGPA, please enter numeric 1 as your CGPA and then explain it in the Optional essay.

Hello Sir,

Firstly thanks for your prompt response for all our questions.

My query is regarding AWA score. How much of significance does the admin team give for AWA scores of GMAT? If an applicant has minimal verbal score - does this get compensated with a decent AWA score? Or is this thought, just a myth?

Thanks,
Viswanath

hi,

I appeared in GMAT recently and got an abysmally bad score of 680 Q-49/V-32.

Though I understand that adcom has always emphasized on the overall application and not just the GMAT, yet I genuinely want to understand the importance of GMAT score and the break up of the GMAT. This question becomes even more important since I read in one of the posts that GMAT scores are also considered at the time of placements.

I have had good acads in the past at IIT and +2 etc. I have pursued CFA level I and pursuing FRM. Can my past academic performance offset my current academic performance( low GMAT score).

Also in my 3 yrs of work ex so far , I have 2.5 yrs of ex in IT and 0.5 yrs in Financial Services. I would have areound 1 yr by the time of admission. Will I be considered in IT pool or Financial Services.

Also I want to know the no of offers made in R1 and R2 last year. How much disadvantage is a person at when applying for R2.

Also can a candidate choose the specialization at the time of admission or it is only after the common currciulum that a person can choose ??

hi ,

I posted this few days back. I think the adcom missed my post. Could you please answer this query?
