Please submit your work experience from the sister firm for the time you were associated with it (technically you were working for that company during that time Ex: 04/07 - 04/08. A second letter should come from your current firm (04/08- till date) along with your latest pay slip. An explanation of the entire issue in the optional essay will help us have clarity about your work experience. Menon
Thank you. I was wondering, can the first to final payslip from the previous firm be valid, in lieu of a letter?
Also, I have another query. Can I submit a recommendation from academics? From the professor under whom I completed my Master's thesis?
Hello Sir, You have mentioned in one of the previous threads that a career switch is difficult if the years of experience are more. I am working as an SAP Consultant in PricewaterhouseCoopers for the last 2 and half years. By the time I join ISB(provided I get an admission), I will complete around 3 and half years. So, if I want to shift from SAP Consultancy to finance, say investment banking or asset management, will it be very difficult? This is one of the main reasons why I want to pursue an MBA from an internationally acclaimed school like ISB. Please advise. Thanking you, Regards, Sumedha
Hello Sir, It would be great if you could allay my fears. Waiting for a reply, positive hopefully. Regards, Sumedha
Hi Sir, Thanx a ton for taking time to reply to our questions..This is Tony.. Its my dream to get into ISB.. i graduated last year,2007...majored in engg (EEE)...my profile thus far.. is 10th-83% 12th-85% B.E - 73%
i always wanted to get into MBA finance..and since i knew getting into schools like ISB and gud b-schools abroad i would require a minimum of 2 yrs of work exp..i decided not to take CAT and to work for 2 yrs..got placed in the first company that came for campus placements...Wipro Technologies..as a project engineer..at chennai..lived my life here.. after 6 months..in november,i was asked to go to gurgaon..i was not interested to go to gurgaon and searched for alternate jobs..thats when i got a call from Intelenet Global Services...its a BPO company bought by Barclays Bank(UK) and since it dealt with banking and finance...and for a reason that bschools require 2 yrs of full time experience and ISB mentioned on its website as relevant work experience..i was of the opinion this would only help me in my endeavour to pursue MBA in finance..! and hence i joined..!
am now working thr and have quite an idea on the basics of banking and finance and was awarded a few certificates for topping and bein the best performer in my project..!
Sir,my question is... is BPO experience counted on an equal level to experience on other streams?! and secondly is my case of joining Intelenet cuz it would help me out in my future endeavour justified? are my scores at school and graduate level decent enough?! and with a gmat score of 700+ and 3 yrs of wrk exp whr i am at this point..do i have a gud chance of getting into ISB?
i have a strong view of what am doin right now..instead of jus moving places widout any plans..i have taken the lane which would keep me on a better position than what i would have been when wid wipro technologies..am i right to think this way sir?!
i had completed my btech course in 2005..but was able to pass one paper only in 2006..i had started working in between..will i be able to state this work ex on my application form??
I have worked for 2 years and 1 month (after graduation in 2005) with one of the reputed hotel chains in India. In these two years, the Management Training Programme lasted for 18 months. Will the Management Training Programme be considered as work experience?
After leaving my last job I have been working as a Freelance Hospitality Trainer since past 9 months. If I apply this year for ISB, I would complete around 19 months(June 2009) in my present profession . Will all this be considered as work experience?
I m presently with a Bank as a permanent employee, but I 'm also assisting my famliy in our business and working as a teacher at one of the institutes on a part time basis. Will these experiences also be considered with the application?
I have read and as per my understanding a world class MBA class is one which is diverse, but as per the website,57% of the students at ISB are form the IT background. Even with other great extra-curicular activities of every applicant, Is 57% class compostion with IT experience a great composition, doesn't makes it monotonous.
Does a really very diverse career stand a better chance than the orthodox ones.
I'll really appreciate, if can answer the above mentioned queries.
1. The salary segment in the application does not include a line item for bonus - my salary structure works like this CTC = base + atleast 10% bonus. Should I mention the base component only, or include the bonus as well ?
2. Is salary/% increase in salary evaluative ? Why I ask is because my experience is 2 years below the averge ISB experience, but my salary is greater than the average incoming salary, and is almost 100% more than when I started, i.e. 2 years ago.
Thanks
Regards, Convo
Dear IIM aspirant,
Please include the bonus as well.
We look at the quality and depth of your experience and not your salary prior joining ISB.
I have done my B.Tech (Computer Science) and then MBA-IT (from SYMBIOSIS). After my MBA, I have started on my own on Jan 1st, 2007 with some angel funding from US VCs. My company is an online advertising agency that specializes in affiliate marketing. Its based out of Bangalore.
We have achieved break even right in our first year of operations and going strong in our second year with more than 40 people. We are working with almost all the top Indian Internet Companies.
Now, I am looking at doing MBA from ISB so that the skills I acquire there can be used to take my company to the next level.
I have secured 640 in GMAT.
Can you please let me know whether my entrepreneurial achievements can help me in the admission process, especially with the kind of GMAT score I have secured.

Dear Sumedha,
With 3.5 years of work experience it will be comparatively easier for you to make a career shift. Please refer to page no. 3 Menon
1. Is the rolling admission policy ,only for International applicants or does it apply to Indian Applicants as well?.
2. Secondly, I work for a US ERP major in bangalore as a CRM software developer. In the short term, post my MBA, I would want to get into Product Management in High Tech or IT,coming back to ERP, if posisbly ,to the same Company. Is ISB , the right place to be looking for? I checked out the ISB web site,to figure out a couple of courses namely,"New Product Development" and"systems management" but am still worried about placements in this domain. Do students pass out from ISB and get placed as Product Managers or Product Consultants. Sriram
Sriram,
The rolling admission policy is only for International applicants.
ISBs programme can equip you with the skills required to get in to product management etc These are the possible options you have post ISB:
Companies like Microsoft & Google take Product managers who manage end to end solutions for a product group
Most of the major ERP companies do come in for recruitment and getting back there at an appropriate level would be an easy option
Many new companies operating in the E-space like Info edge are taking managers to head new business line
You can always try branching into consulting (including IT consulting)
Business development roles in IT companies
For all IT aspirants planning to get back to the industry after ISBs programme the above are some of the options available.
1) I have given my GMAT twice (690 -50q 32v 4awa) and latest (700 -49q 36v 4.5 awa) . Would a very slight increase in scores be considered negative .
2)If i am ready to finance my education through loan and personal fundings instead of expecting a scholarship does that improve my chances for admission.
3) I am a s/w engg with 5 yrs exp in good MNCs and almost a 400% growth from when I started. However, this growth is spanned in two companies and I heard that colleges do not consider salary rises significantly when there is a change in company. Please comment
4) I come from a family of entrepreneurs who have failed in their ventures majorly because of lack of well rounded business knowledge. This aspect has been a driving influence for me to take up an Mba(strategy & entrepreneurship). I had put in effort in these ventures(a small scale Pharma company and advertising agency) on part time basis in designing marketing strategies, presentations and have also done some field work. However, I have no proof to show . Please advise me on how I can highlight this experience. Would a Letter head describing this experience suffice. Please note that these organizations are no more in existence.
Thank you for being with us.Your clarification regarding the institutes firm stand in eligiblity criteria ("2 yrs of work experience-a pre requiste") was informative.Query of mine a pretty similar to those already answered, However a bit strange. What would be the institutes admission policy against a candidate of poor(infact worst) UG track record & break of 2 years during UG with no valid reasons. Is it possible to meet out ISB's eligiblity norms for shortlisting through a good GMAT Score & 2-3 yrs of work experience inspite of such pathetic UG performance.Plz enlighten me...
Thank You
Dear Imthirumalai,
In your case, I would suggest that you aim for a very high GMAT score to compensate for poor academics. Any gap year or poor performance in academics will have to be explained very strongly in your application. Admissions Team
Dear Sir, I have two questions: 1] I'm a re-applicant. I understand from ISB website that re-applicants are allowed, but can you give a percenatge of re-applicants in the last year's batch. 2]I received a mail from ISB mentioning that I was not qualified last year due to my low GMAT score(640). Will substantial improvement in my GMAT score alone provide a chance for interview this time, if substantial improvement in professional career is doubful. (I have an experience of 4.5yrs in manufacturing and 4.0 yrs in services industry).
Thanks Rakesh KK
Rakesh, In the current batch, we have around 80 re-applicants. I hope that clears any misconceptions you have about re-applicants not getting a final offer. As I mentioned earlier, we do a holistic evaluation of your profile. A good GMAT score does not guarantee admission to ISB but it will help you considerably. As a re-applicant you will have to explain the additions to your profile in the last one year and why ISB should shortlist you this year.
I am a re-applicant, and received the feedback that I lost out due to the intense competition within the applicant pool and that I should aim for a higher GMAT score. I have a marked improvement in my GMAT (99%ile), and would like to know whether its possible for ISB to consider the same set of recommendations that were submitted with my previous application, so that I need NOT submit a fresh set of recommendations. Also, will such a request be taken unfavourably ? I ask this because otherwise I would have to ask the same set of people to repeat their time and effort in giving me the recommendations again.
This question is related to my profile and future options after ISB. I'm a CA with 6.5 years of Financial Services experience in managerial roles. I was wondering if ISB prepares one for taking up individual performed roles in equity research, etc. Do we have companies coming in to hire people specifically for financial research oriented roles (as opposed to Financial consulting).
I'm considering a applying to ISB for the 2009 batch. In the short term, I'm looking at an MBA as a way to move into a product marketing role in a technology company in the emerging markets. I wanted to get in touch with an ISB alumni to talk about the ISB MBA program. I registered on the website in May to get connected with an alumni but I didn't receive any info as yet. Should I register again on the website? (after the admissions session started) I also have a query about how students decide on their concentrations at ISB. At this moment, I have a career path in mind but I don't want to shut my mind off to other opportunities available at business school. Do a lot of students change their minds on the concentrations after the core courses are complete? Do they have the time to make such a decision?
my short profile: * WorkEx: Hardware engineer in a systems company in California (4+ years) * Undergraduate: Computer Engineering from an IIT * GMAT: 770
Dear Mr. Menon & Admissions Team, I am a re-applicant, and received the feedback that I lost out due to the intense competition within the applicant pool and that I should aim for a higher GMAT score. Regards.
While GMAT score can be a discriminating factor, it is often not the only one. As the Director himself mentions, they look at your overall app. As a reapplicant, you have to show how you've improved over the last one year, how your app has changed. Even your reco letter could reflect the same thus making it a stronger and better letter.
I'm hopeful your recommenders would not mind spending the same time they did last time. Perhaps they could attach their last letter, and use the new letter to continue from where they left off, commenting on how much you've changed/improved over the past year.
