Learning Never Stops at GIM

Established in 1993, Goa Institute of Management (GIM) has one of the best learning infrastructure among business schools. In order to provide students with an educational experience in an institutional setting, a Student-run Investment Fund ("Vinidhan") was established. The Fund provides students hands-on-training in equity valuation and portfolio management with guidance from industry experts and supervision by finance faculty. Prof. Amiya Sahu, the faculty advisor of Vinidhan, says "the team research companies and decide which stocks to buy and sell, using a chunk of cash that usually comes from GIM students and alumni. The idea is to let students experience first-hand what it's like to play the market and learn from their mistakes".

While on one side students learn with the real pain and gain in the stock market, on another side the learning happens through simulations and games. Prof. Hemant Kumar Padhiari who teaches strategy with Capstone business simulation, feels the simulations like capstone provides students with the opportunity to test assumptions and learn from mistakes so they are better prepared to step confidently into their business career. Through Capstone, students get the chance to apply what they've learned across all disciplines of business in one strategic, competitive, engaging learning experience. Prof. Tarun Pasricha who is a marketing faculty at GIM uses another simulation Markstrat which according to him helps in integrating the students into the real life and the day-to-day choices that face companies in a competitive environment.

The learnings at GIM also happen in the form of social sensitivity. GIM has been quite active and successful in training and producing socially responsible managers.  The Give Goa project of GIM aims to help students become more socially aware and responsible towards the broader good of society. Prof. Sukhathankar, Give Goa coordinator, hope that with Give Goa, students would be better able to describe "real-world" problems and circumstances faced by the community and realize the need for engagement of business and individuals in addressing problems of the community. Give Goa is a mandatory course like any other core courses. The only difference is that it is a one year project where students of the first year of the Post Graduate Program are formed into groups of six to undertake a project at an organization in Goa. Each group is guided by a faculty member and by a project coordinator in the client organization. Projects are taken up broadly in the fields of Education, Social Welfare, Agriculture extension and Public Health.

If we want our students to stay motivated and engaged, then it is essential to make learning fun. The Centre for creativity, Innovation and Design Thinking was established for the same purpose. The centre organized series of workshops covering Theatre, Dance, Photography and Film Making. The idea is to draw students out of their comfort zones, stressing on self-expression, articulation and group dynamics. The centres drives the credo of learning at every level-both in the class and outside  "At GIM, the learning never stops" says Professor Cedric Serpes who chairs the centre with a team of dedicated faculty with diverse skills that enrich e centre's delivery. It takes diversity of learning to form a global manager and the Centre provides diverse opportunities to make this happen.

Learning really is a lifelong process. At GIM we recognize this and help to keep the learning going all year long.

Piyush: The best student of 2014-2016 batch.

Goa institute of Management (GIM) was a dream, a happy dream. I vividly remember the moment when I got the admission call. I recall being in a state of bliss....

I adore the book "The 7 habits of highly effective people" by Stephen R Covey. The second habit there is "Begin with the end in mind". Before landing here at GIM, I did think about the "end". For sure at the end of 2 years, I wanted to have a healthy mix of academic and industrial insights along with getting a good set of friends with whom I could discuss professional and personal challenges.

With these objectives, I landed on 15th June 2014 at GIM Sanquelim campus. It was love at first sight. I was amazed by the beautiful campus. After a long time, we inhaled pristine air. The other thing which struck me was the library. It was filled with the type of books I have always liked. 16th June 2014, our induction programme started with ice breaking sessions. It felt special to be sitting in a campus with students from more than 20 states. The diversity at display was amazing. I distinctly remember the first time when I looked around in the cafeteria and marvelled at the number of different languages being spoken around me.

The first trimester was hectic. We were still figuring out the systems, procedures and at the same time getting to know each other. Most of us had not seen the heavy rainfall which is a characteristic of Goa. However not once did we get the time to watch the rains. On the contrary, we were running helter-skelter trying to complete our assignment with 11 59 PM being the most hated time of the day. WhatsApp changed from just being a chat destination to being a study destination as many groups for various courses were formed. Continuous evaluation was a major challenge. It meant we had to be attentive in the class and be prepared for surprise quizzes. The positive thing was some student or the other took the trouble of helping the batch by organising tutorial classes. Finance, economics and statistics tutorial classes were a rage, with every inch of classroom or the common room full of students eager to learn.

Second and the third trimester were way better than the first trimester. Working in different groups helped us know each other's strengths and weaknesses. So group formation became a bit easier. This improved the efficiency and effectiveness of the groups which improved the quality of assignments. In the process got some friends for life who were the antidote to stress.

"Give goa" Thursdays were a welcome distraction as we got to connect to the socially and economically challenged part of society. Our group had to train the High school teachers of Government High School Morlem in using computers (especially MS Office) so that the pedagogy became more effective. This assignment was very fulfilling and we became better human beings at the end of it.

GIM also has one of the highest number of student driven clubs. They do a wonderful job of organising national level events. This keeps the campus buzzing throughout the year. Our true mettle got tested in these events. It also helped in networking with management students across campuses.

Second year was all about gathering the necessary skills to get ready for the corporate life. Weekdays and weekends merged as we had classes from 7 15 am to 11 pm including Saturdays and Sundays. We got used to it after a while and found our own ways to find time for fun and frolic.

In the mean-time got selected as the class representative in the first year. Also was the class representative for a lot of electives in the second year. There were always deadline issues as the students wanted professors to be a bit lenient. On the contrary, the faculty were very strict about the academic rigour. The proximity with the Professors and the PGP office (administration cell) helped me see any issue from three angles namely the students' perspective, professors' perspective and the administration's perspective. This helped immensely in finding out solutions for challenges which invariably cropped up.

I had a conversation with Father Romuald D'Souza in Alumni meet of 2014 who always believed in working for a noble cause. He advised me to master one skill or philosophy at a time. Never thought that I would receive a gold medal named after him. On the convocation day of 26th March 2016, my name was called out for "Fr Romuald D'Souza Best Student of the year".  GIM journey started with bliss and ended with complete ecstasy...

Exchange Programme @GIM

"Taking part on the exchange programme is an invaluable experience that extended my knowledge of international business, enhanced my CV, and enriched my life on a personal and professional level" says PGP student Vishal Chandrabhan Singh. Goa Institute of Management offers several scholarships for participating in the exchange programme. Vishal went to Catolica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, Portugal. "My experience in Germany has invigorated me to change the way management world works" says another PGP student Siya V. Gaonkar who went to Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt, Germany on Sir Ratan Tata Exchange Scholarship.

GIM always believe that it is important for any aspiring business student to have an exposure to an international B School and develop a global perspective. With this idea in mind, GIM has a network of partners such as Catolica Lisbon School of Business and Economic, Universidade

Catolica Portuguesa, Portugal, Hochshule Ingolstadt, University of Applied Sciences, Ingolstadt, Germany, University of Antwerp, Faculty of Applied Economic Sciences - Business Administration, Antwerp, Belgium; Fujen Catholic University, Taiwan and School of Business , Kansas University, USA.

In the current year GIM has active students exchange program with three institutions:

1. Antwerp University, Faculty of Applied Economic Sciences, Belgium.

2. Technische Hochschule Ingolstadt, Germany

3. Catolica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, Portugal

"International learning and knowledge propels students towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives" says Prof. Kaushik Desarkar who looks after the program. Prof. Desarkar is positive on adding one more institution from Fujen Catholic University, Taiwan  next academic year. GIM's student exchange programs enable GIM students to study abroad for one term at its partner universities as well as enables students from its partner universities to study here in Goa. This opportunity exposes students to a new cultural and learning environment and is a unique opportunity for students to broaden their perspectives and learn to manage in an international context.  Students are not required to pay any academic fees at the partner university. All students can apply for the exchange programs - Applicants are required to submit academic records, CV, and a Statement of Purpose and attend a selection interview conducted by a panel of faculty members.

Society of Finance(SOFIA) came forward with GuruBhai: A conventional trading floor game where in the participants buy and sell stock on the trading floor of specific companies and commodities like Crude, Gold and Copper just the way trading used to take place before the development of online trading. The event turned out to be an excellent learning experience for the participants as they got a better idea of how actually buying and selling of stocks takes place in real world. Great levels of enthusiasm was displayed by the students as they racked their brains and crunched numbers. The winners of the event were Team The Spartans( Jeet Ganatra, Kunal Jain, Mohit Agrawal) with the Runners up being Team Tangents ( Jyoti Gupta, Saivallabh Salgaonkar, Ketan Naik) #LifeAtGIM #EventsAtGIM
