Guys,
Whats the admission process at GLIM?
When does it start ?
Agantuk.
HI aal those guys who are in Great lakes (GLIM). My name is Mayank Gupta.
I belong to New Delhi. I will definitely apply to GLIM this year. But
let me tell you about my background. I am a BCA graduate but telling you
frankly that I dont have any interests in coding and computer programming.
the biggest mistake I did in my life was taking BCA as my graduation. I
completed my graduation in the year 2003. After my grads I started working
for a call centre. I worked there for an year as customer care executive.
In sep 2004 I left my Call centre and preparep for CAT and all those
exams but not able to get thru any of those good institutes. Now I am
planning to join a 1 year Diploma course in Financial Planning. Here
in delhi there is an institute which offers 1 year diploma in Financial
planning. they say that it had a great future but frankly speaking that
I am doing this bcoz I dont want to sit idle at home and want to learn
something concrete so that I can overcome my Bca graduation. Thats why
I am choosing finance. Please enlighten me that if I am a good candidate
for GLIM or not. OR my Financial planning options is really a good option
or not. Do this really have a good future. Please reply. I am really
depressed and need help from you guys.
Hi mayank,
I seriously cannot comment. You seem to be a bit confused. there is no point in doing degrees to overshadow your previously earned degrees. It does not serve any purpose. My advice would be you would have to do some soul searching ,try to understand where your interests lie and try to proceed in that direction. It makes no point in doing one degree after the other. You might ultimately land up in a good college , but after that trying to influence your prospective employer during campus interviws will be difficult.
I dont know whether Financial Planning is good/Not. I have no idea about it so you would have to ask some finance majoring guy or possibly a chartered accountant who will be able to give you a more objective view of it.
I can understand your predicament mayank, but the bottomline is where you want to see yourself at the end of 5 or 10 years. so try to build foundation to achieve your dreams. sorry if i sounded like a philosopher, but i couldn't restrain from giving my view points.
reg your chances for great lakes i cannot comment as i dont know what your strengths are. If you really are MBA material i dont see a material why u cant fit in here.Try to make up your mind dude. ATB.
Guys,

Admission process at Great lakes is that you would be required to have taken either GMAT/CAT. so whichever is convenient for you take the corresponding entrance test, buy the application form which i believe will be out by around sep- oct.i am not too sure . can u shoot a mail to admissions @ glakes reg: this specific query. moderators i am really sorry for typing this mail ID. kindly excuse.then complete the app form and send it with either your CAT/GMAT scores. Guyz/gals who have taken GMAT can apply during the first cycle. ppl who have taken CAT can apply after they get their CAT scores. college starts around april 3rd week.
Hope i answered all your queries.
i guess i did not give the mail ID properly...
its admissions @ glakes.org
Thanks haripi,
But please tell me wat a person shud do if he doesnt gain anything in his graduation studies. Like his content is really poor. as my stream was bca in which content has to be strong. so thats why I want to do FP. wat shud I do now. I have to options:
1. take admission in any c-grade b-skool and do mba and after two years search for a job.
2. do Financial planning Diploma and side by side prepare for CAT and give a good shot next year.
Please help. I hope I dont disturb you dear.

Hey Arun...long time no see....
You forgot to read Harpi's earlier posts....
Any guesses for what commitee i am in??..obviously PR..
He is the "official" PR for GLIM....So i doubt you will hear anything about the "rainy" part
Ketan
PS: No offence to haripi2.... if you can really let us know the other side of the coin.. it would be really great....
3 things that might help people:
(1) Placement stats. What is the kind of job that the previous batch got? Is the placement 100% so far for them?
(2) What is the infrastructure in terms of the building, the number of permanent teaching staff, library etc.?
(3) What is the applicants/admit ratio ? What was the criteria for admission and how strictly was it followed?
In the business for the last many years, I know for a fact that the above could definitely be gray areas for an institution to start off with. It might not make you proud but then there is nothing to hide either.
Arun
PS: Ketan, its been a long time since the SOP threads dude.........the app deadlines for this year is over

Arun, Ketan .. Its true that it didnt started with a bang like ISB.. And... there has to be some shadow when there is sunshine.. .. We will get back to you all tomorrow, as exams and assignments are over our head.. More than brand or any other obvious factor, I certainly believe that it should be something else which had drawn people to a budding institute like Great Lakes. I am not able to comprehend what made the Woolmark Asia-pac marketing manager to resign his job after 15 years, to come for an MBA in Great Lakes. (And, many such!!) Got to go, guys..

Hey Trail Blazer,
Its not about starting with a bang...... and my personal belief is that a school starting with a "bang" usually got something to hide... for ISB it was the exhorbitant fees they are charging... thats why they needed the bang... and BTW I believe ISB has still not reached the break-even point ......
And I can assure you buddy that its not at all necessary that people u mention joining Great Lakes speaks for anything.... I have seen people in certain industry to be so fed up with their jobs that they are willing to do whatever it takes to get away from it and what better than a Great Lakes mba, which promises a good one year break without sufferring any career setbacks... rather they will get the most sough after credentials in the job market today... and with an experience like 15 years.. GLIM will welcome them with open arms, which implies easy admission and they also do not have to burden themselves with huge loans of 15-30 lacs (if they had chosen ISB or US Bschools) so that implies their families dont have to bother with any extra burden....
What Arun mentioned are the true indicators of what a bschool grey areas are. I would just like to elaborate a bit on the first one....
Placement: I have never (I repeat NEVER) seen any b-school giving away the job-profiles secured by their students.... a job after mba is not about moolah... its about the quality.... which no-one mentions... i wonder why? So if you can.. please mention the job profiles people got last year along with their previous experience..... that would be real help....
Hope to see the facts out here :-)
Ketan
Hey Trail Blazer,

Ketan
hey Ketan
he wud have quite a job tryin to put up job profiles of 130 ppl!! i do know that there about 4-5 ppl of the batch yet to be placed at GLIM and the reason given being that they were lookin for specific profiles in specific industries and were not interested in other offers! Though i wud like the Glimmers to confirm the status of these guys.
extremely sorry to digress on GLIM thread guys but since s'thing was being discussed abt ISB, I better jump in.
Hey Ketan, post on the ISB thread if you have some observations, queries about ISB's policies or anything else you might want to know. I cant promise to have answers to all queries but will try to put in best I can. Esp the 'break-even' thingy.
Continue GLIM guys. You're doin a good job here. Apologies for butting in.

Just so that I am not misunderstood let me tell you that Harpi (inspite of being on the PR of GLIM ) has an unquestionable integrity as far as I am concerned. I do not doubt one bit of what he is saying.
I am just trying to add credence to the matter by asking people (alum/current batch) to paint a more realistic picture. As ketan pointed out, the high fees charged by ISB was certainly one of the pain points for them. I just want such points regarding GLIM to come through.
Arun

Arun, its not about personal integrity. PG is a public forum and an official PR of an institute would hesitate in writing the truth about the grey areas... and I believe you people do not have the idea that this forum is being watched by GLIM officials (including profs) very closely.......and haripi being a student of GLIM has to be extremely careful on what he writes......
Lets hope he is able to bring out the truth.....(which i seriously doubt )

hey don,
what u have said is absolutely true..no point denying that..but there are just a handful left as u mentioned and profiles they are looking at is like working in an IT consultancy under a so and so vertical with at least a minimum so and so salary. these being the issues there are still some ppl left and mgmt is trying its level best in trying to ensure that these ppl land up their dream jobs. the official final placement report will come out in a short while from now. will keeep you ppl posted.
ketan thanks a lot for putting yourself in my shoes...(read the last post..) . anyaways i will try to put in my max in pointing out certain grey areas.will try to come out with an article on the same lines as written by Ramki of ISB.
If anybody has any further personal queries which cannot be publicly discussed kindly PM me.will try to come out with the report in a short while.
Regards,
Prashanth
Okay maybe I am as reality-challenged as most of my friends would like me to think. For I don't care about anyone reading what I write, or else I can never get to write anything that I want (excuse the grammar).
Remember that being fair will help rather than hurt the cause.

There are also others reading this who wud be able to point out out any **** like discrepancies they put forth. So rest assured im sure the Glimmers are well aware of the need for accuracy of what they put here. And i dont expect haripi to be bad mouthing his institute!! PM him yaar he wud probably be more open then. Understand the limits to what he can say on an open forum!! if necessary u can cross check what he says with other Glimmers on the forum :)
Lets leave this space to Glimmers to put in more about their B School Life

The link is working perfectly fine. I just found the following from this link
Highest CTC 17.00 LakhsAvg. CTC5.6 Lakhs
I just wonder why the figure quoted as CTC? Sorry this might sound a silly question.. but a CTC or Cost To Company is a bit weired figure used by companies to boost their salaries.... Just to give an example, during the placement at my engg college, a company in Pune offered jobs at CTC 8 Lakhs and the in-hand which people got is something like 20-25K pm.....So if an average CTC is 5.6 Lakhs... its hard to figure out the actual in-hand salaries....it might be as low as 15-20 K pm.....
No offense meant to anyone.... and GLIM students dont take this post as something against your institute. GLIM is definitely a great institute.. I just wanted to know the truth.......
