Life @ Great Lakes Inst. of Mgmt-Chennai [GLIM]

Hi Noel,

The construction is in full swing. We will be positively moving to the new campus on March 2009. 60% of the main administrative block is complete. A couple of hostels are ready and the others are in progress. We are on schedule to finishing it on time. Marg Constructions has been contracted with the project. In fact, the other day, our dean whom we lovingly call Uncle Bala, said that he would make sure that the current batch of champions would spend 2 to 3 weeks in the new campus before passing out. Convocation will surely be held in the new campus!! Boy o Boy, when the campus is complete, it will be something to behold.

@twiceblessedman That is a great news! Something for the next batch to look upto :)

Mr. Sriram, the Vice President of Marketing and Regional Head for Fuel Services at Reliance Industries visited Great Lakes on the 26th August. He has over 17 years of Sales, Marketing and Operations experience covering Automobile, Lubricants and POL industries. Mr. Sriram gave us an overview on Relationship Management a sphere that has been gaining considerable attention in the recent past. He spoke about how Relationship Management is the only way to gain a competitive edge by increasing customer loyalty both through better service and increased switching costs for the customer. The talk peppered with personal experiences was engrossing and gave us a new perspective on Relationship Management.
Mr. Srivatsa Krishna visits Great Lakes

The Class of 2009 is alpine fresh after a scintillating session of a power talk by Mr. Srivatsa Krishna. He reached the campus dot at 16:45 yesterday, the 28th and the talk was scheduled at 17:00 hrs. But before we go any further let me take you through his profile.
Srivatsa topped the Indian Civil Services Examination in 1994 and joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). (This is considered to be one of the toughest examinations in the world, and each year about 500,000 compete for 50 positions.) He went on doing his full time MBA from Harvard Business School and an executive MBA from The Wharton School of Business. He is currently the Executive Director & CEO South Asia of a Dubai World Group Company, one of the largest infrastructure companies globally.
Before Harvard, he was part of the core team of the Government of Andhra Pradesh and was responsible for some of the key investment promotion and e-government initiatives there. In fact the Cyberabad phenomenon could be attributed to him. He was the single most influencing factor to the then Chief Minister Mr. Chandrababu Naidu. Mr. Krishna is also a Staff member - Strategy, Finance and Risk Management Vice Presidency at World Bank in Washington D.C. He is currently co-authoring a case study as part of an ISR with Professor Michael Porter on technology clusters and economic development in India. A noted columnist and writer, he is currently working on a book on Leadership and e-Government Strategy. He has been honored as one of the Top 100 Global Leaders for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum at Davos. Other past awardees include Bill Gates, Tony Blair, Jeff Bezos, Larry Page and Michael Dell to name a few. The list would run into a few hundred miles of national highways but I hold.
The next couple of hours took us into a realm of hope, dreams, despondence, optimism, helplessness, all put into one drink. It was amazing. The talk started with the current state of India - The competitive advantage, the Information Technology edge and the general scheme of things; put across in a positive light. And then came the killer - he took us through the Chinese statistics. The sheer progress that China has made in the past couple of decades has been breathtaking. He went on talking about a part of China which, once upon a time was tagged - deep ditch; now the barren land houses more than three thousand and five hundred skyscrapers! Thats more than the total skyscrapers of Detroit, SanFransisco, Seattle and New York put together. In fact, what the US has done in the past 40 years, China has done that in 20 years. That itself talks volumes about the growth rate of the country. Simply put, its humungous. He went on hinting that comparing India with China is plain preposterous. The culture of the two countries had a role in molding the nations as they are. The Indian culture of sustainability amidst irreversible ruckus is not in sync with their Chinese counterpart. Of course, questions about human rights in China are bombarded on various occasions but it they have so far been kept away from the spotlight. The day concluded with a long question and answer session. He talked about his Harvard days, the Hyderabad stint and umpteen other things under the pale August sky,
It was one of the best presentations that the class has ever seen. Mr. Srivatsa is surely a person to watch out for.

Mr. A. Janakiramans guest lecture on Indian Aviation Industry Fuel Business Opportunities and Challenges
Date : September 3, 2008

Time : 2: 30 pm to 4 pm

Venue : Seminar Hall

Summary : Mr.Janakiraman began the evening by showing 2 amazing videos - the dangers of carelessness on duty in airports (where a small car was literally blown away into the sea by the back draft of a jet engine) and the deadly effects of negligence (where a crew member was sucked into a jet engine). He showed these videos to highlight an important point - there's more to aviation than airhostesses and glamour.

Representing the aviation fuel business of Reliance Petroleum, Mr. Janakiraman spent the remainder of the evening enlightening the group of the intricacies of the ATF business. He recounted several incidents of how Reliance had to overcome oil PSU interference and entry barriers in setting up fuel farms and refueling stations in the major airports of India and how privatization was improving airport efficiency and aircraft turnaround time. He then delved into the technicalities of refuelers and hydrants (technologies used to refuel the planes) and revealed some staggering numbers on fuel requirements of planes (approx. 600,000 litres for a single trip). He also shared some very topical information on how airport infrastructure was exploding in India, but only in selective places and he ended his talk with where he saw the Indian aviation industry a few years down the line.

All in all, it was an interesting evening where the students gained an insight into a little known but tremendously important field of business.

Date : September 23rd, 2008 (Tuesday)

Time : 5:30 pm to 7 pm

Venue : Seminar Hall

Summary:
Lt.Gen.S.Pattibhiraman, Vice Chief Of Army Staff (Retd.) engaged the students of Great Lakes this evening in a lively discussion on India's armed forces, their role in society and what corporates in India could learn from seasoned army officers.

He spoke at length about the history of armed conflict, from the time of Christ all the way upto today's Iraq conflict, and how over the years the nature of war was changing in fundamental ways. Today's engagements mostly involve terrorist threats and guerilla warfare, but traditional wars (like the World Wars) are not predicted. Furthermore, the role of men in battle will slowly decline as robotics and automated devices like UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) take over deadly tasks. In this and other regards, he lamented India's lack of truly world class warfare equipment and the lukewarm success of indigenous defense technology.

He was quizzed extensively by the students on how soldiers adapted to normal life after active tours of duty, how officers leaving the armed forces were absorbed by companies into mainstream business and where he saw India on the geo-political stage of tomorrow. All in all, it was a fact-filled evening for the audience.
