FDP on R in Research:

The recent technological advances have increased a teacher’s responsibility in getting trained in specific tools for analyzing the data. ‘R’ is one such tool that helps the researcher to analyse the data with ease. Due to its popularity, it has become important for academia to learn it in detail. To address this training need a 2-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on "R" in Research was offered to on June 14 & 15, 2018 at SDMIMD.

The FDP focused on training the participants in R and also on steps to be adopted by faculty and students in using R for research and publications. Hands-on sessions introduced feature available in R to the participants.

Dr. Srilakshminarayana was the resource person for the programme.

The new students of the PGDM  2018-20 were introduced to the Toastmasters International on July 21, 2018, at SDMIMD. The talk was hosted by TM Rahul Hirani, Vice President-Public Relations, SDMIMD Toastmasters’ Club.

TM Harris A Wahid delivered a motivational speech about the practical importance of Toastmaster’s club and introduced the club activities. By citing examples, he told the batch about benefits of being a Toastmaster member.

TM Sujatha Rajpal, an author and Ted Ex speaker, delivered invited talk and conveyed the message “It’s not as difficult, as it appears”. She enlightened with her experience in dealing with failures and how to approach others in giving her thoughts and ideas. 

The welcome address was delivered by TM Sreerag Rajendran, President SDMIMD Toastmasters’ Club. The meeting ended with a vote of thanks proposed by TM Dichin Sunder, Vice President Education SDMIMD Toastmasters’ Club. TM Athul TP, Secretary SDMIMD Toastmasters’ Club, took the role of Surgent at arms and coordinated the proceedings. Prof. Rajendra Todalbagi, Associate Professor - Operations, presented the mementos to both Ms. Rajpal and DTM Harris as a token of respect and gratitude.

    

Edin Synergy: An Industry Academia Interface:

SDM Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) in collaboration with Edin Bridge – an voluntary group of HR Professionals had organized Industry-Academia Meet - Edin Synergy: An Industry-Academia Interface on October 26, 2018 at SDMIMD. The event was aimed at enhancing the employability skills of the youth.

Kannada Rajyotsava was celebrated at Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD), Mysore, on November 20, 2018. The Rajyotsava started with a festive mode decorating the campus with buntings, posters of prominent personalities of Karnataka, and flowers. The event started with hosting of the Kannada flag of 40 feet. Students sang the Kannada Naadageete ‘Jaya Bharata Jananiya tanujaate’ followed by National Anthem. A special lunch with unique dishes of Karnataka was served by the students from 22 states of the institute to faculty and staff members of the institute. 

In the evening, sports and cultural programs were organized. Traditional local games of Karnataka were introduced to other state students. Students from other states sang Kannada songs and danced to the tunes. Kabaddi match played between the staff and students’ teams and the ‘Folk dance’ performance were the highlights of the celebrations.

 Mr. Gopalakrishnan Karuppiah, Managing Director, Gulf Crescent - Oman & UAE, was the speaker for the invited talk organized on November 20, 2018 to the batch of PGDM 2018-20. The speaker presented an overview of investment and capital market operations. The step-by-step approach followed by the speaker introduced the different types of investment; overview of the capital market; role of management and regulators in a capital market; functioning of securities market; and, significant role played by documentation in the entire process of investment. The discussion on how to invest in the securities market and how to evaluate the company’s performance for making good investment decisions was the highlight of the talk. The session was followed by questions and answers 

   

Pre-Conference Workshop on 'Micro Finance for Macro Development'
 

India still has a large population that belongs to the bottom of the pyramid and inclusion doesn’t mean having a bank account, but it has more to do with a wide range of financial services and security such as insurance, health care, education, it is beyond that. Microfinance industry is indispensable for a country like India because it caters to a large set of people who are at the bottom of the pyramid. This industry is aiding the economic growth of the Nation by catering to a humongous population that is unserved or unserved’ thus said Mr. Udaya Kumar, MD & CEO, Grameen Financial Services. 

Mr. Uday Kumar, was the chief guest for the Pre-Conference Workshop on Micro Finance for Macro Development organized as a part of the 3rd edition of International Conference on Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Emerging Trends at SDMIMD, Mysore. 

Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, presided over the function commented on the importance of discussing emerging trends in the field of management and how SDMIMD is contributing to the field of management research through International Conferences.

The inaugural session was followed by the technical sessions. Mr. V.N. Salimath Chairman Initiatives for Development Foundation delivered a session on 'BC Model of Micro Financing & its Sustainability' and 'Emerging Challenges in MFIs' Engagement with Community' was delivered by Mr. Pradyumna K.P Former Bank Officer. 

A panel discussion was the session planned to concluded workshop. Panelists Mr. William D’ Souza, Vice-Chairman, Sanghamithra Rural Financial Services; Dr. R. Indira, President, Indian Sociological Society; and, Dr. N.R. Parasuraman, Director, SDMIMD, Mysore; shared their views on the topic 'Nexus between Micro Credit and Sustainability: Unravelling the Research Perspectives'. Dr. M.R. Suresh Professor-Marketing, SDMIMD, Mysore, moderated the panel.

About the Conference

Human Resources Management, in today’s volatile business environment, is playing the role of a strategic business partner and the key differentiator in the business growth, development and survival of the firms. Effectiveness of HRM function is being evaluated by its level of contribution towards the return on investment of any organization, by keeping the specific performance-driven goals in mind. Along with addressing functional issues, HRM is now expected to manage, analyse, and predict the changes in the business processes, and accordingly, align the organizations’ systems, structures, and policies to leverage people competitiveness, with regard to the operating business environment. The emphasis today, is to manage HR functions and policies in a manner, such that, organizations can be provided with a unique pool of people, who can continuously take the organizations to higher levels of growth and sustainability.

In the above backdrop, SDMIMD is organizing its 7th International Conference on Managing Human Resources at the Workplace, on 14 and 15 December, 2018, at SDMIMD campus, Mysuru.

International Symposium 2019  


The 2019 edition of the international symposium is scheduled on January 7, 2019, at SDMIMD. The day-long event will include a keynote address, a special address, student interaction sessions and some fun time for the visiting students with SDMIMD students.  Students from Texas A&M, who will be at SDMIMD as a part of the student exchange program will be participating in the event.

Mr. Lakshminarayan Ganesh serves as Executive Chairman of the Board, Managing Director of the Company. He was Executive Vice Chairman of the Board, Joint Managing Director of Rane Holdings Ltd. Besides serving as Vice Chairman on the Board of Rane Holdings Limited, L Ganesh is the Chairman of the constituent companies of Rane Group. He began his career as a Management Trainee in Rane Engine Valves Limited in 1979. Having assumed the executive leadership as the Chairman of Rane group of companies in 2006, he has steered the group through testing times of recent economic downturn. Utilizing the period of economic slowdown towards strengthening management and leadership capabilities, he carved out a leaner, stronger and nimbler Rane Group. He is focused on leveraging the foundation of operational excellence towards driving growth. A qualified Chartered Accountant, he holds a master’s degree in business administration from the Pennsylvania State University, USA. He has held several positions of high responsibilities with various industry forums and had been the President of ACMA and Madras Management Association, and Chairman of the Confederation of Indian Industry, Southern Region. Currently, he is Honorary Consul for New Zealand in South India

  

Interactive Session on Wealth Management

 

· An interactive session on ‘Wealth Management’ was organized by Preraran – SDMIMD Alumni Association on December 22, 2018. Mr. Vijay Kumar M., Independent Financial Adviser and alumnus of PGDM Program delivered the session.

· Students from PGDM Program with finance specialization attended the sessions. The session commenced with drawing up ideas from the students ranging from various investment avenues to career opportunities in the field of finance. The speaker briefed about the various investment avenues which yield high returns to the investors and said, ‘in today’s dynamic business economy, there is no proper financial planning and quality advise for the investors which include lack of trust factor and continuity which is very crucial’.

· Mr. Vijay Kumar then enunciated the benefits of a term insurance plan for an investor and his family. In his talk, sir also threw light on the financial pyramid, the process of which involves, protection planning (investing in insurance schemes), emergency cash flow planning (an investment in an emergency fund), debt reduction planning (considering loans) and investment planning (for achieving goals).

· Mr. Vijay Kumar emphasized that, for a financial adviser to be successful, the process of financial planning needs to be done objectively and scientifically and it is essential for a financial adviser to have a follow up with clients, review their investments annually and involve them completely in the process of financial planning and wealth management. He reiterated that time spent in the market matters for making a worthwhile investment and it is not timing the market that matters.

· The session was concluded with students seeking clarifications from Mr. Vijay Kumar on various aspect of finance and wealth management.

Annual Leadership Talk 2019 by Mr. Krishnakumar Natarajan of Mindtree


Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) is organizing the 11th edition of Annual Leadership Talk (ALT) on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 in SDMIMD Auditorium. This year the talk will be delivered by Mr. Krishnakumar Natarajan, Executive Chairman, Mindtree.
 

The event, which has been held since 2008, has had speakers who are luminaries from various fields like Dr. Michael A. Consumano (Professor, MIT Sloan School), Dr. V. Prakash (Former Director, CFTRI, Mysore), Dr. H. Sudarshan (Hony. Secretary, Karuna Trust), Dr. R Balasubramaniam (Founder, Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement, Mysore); Mr. Anil Sachdev, Founder and CEO of Grow Talent Company Ltd; Dr. R.A. Mashelkar, The President, Global Research Alliance; Prof. Gita Gopinath, Professor in Economics, Harvard University; Mr. Sid Mookerji, Global CEO and Co- Founder, Software Paradigms International Group LLP (SPI); Mr. Salil Ravindran, CFO, Marlabs; and last year Dr Stefan Wilms, Dean of the faculty of Economics and Transport, Heilbronn University, Germany, delivered the 10th edition of Annual Leadership Talk. 

  

Prerana - Alumni Talk by Mr. Sudhindra

 
Mr. Sudhindra K.S. of PGDM 2009-11 was on campus to deliver a talk on "IT Industry: Opportunities and expectation from Management Graduates" on December 22, 2018, to the PGDM 2018-20 Batch. 

Mr. Sudhindra has gained good experience in driving sustainable business value through DevOps, Lean and Agile Transformation at Philips. His talk related to these experiences. He stated that the lack of knowledge on how an industry operates results in many people getting rejected in the interviews, despite having scores.  


   

Guest Lecture by Dr. Ullas Rao



 Dr. Ullas Rao, Assistant Professor of Finance - School of Social Sciences, Heriot-Watt University Dubai Campus, United Arab Emirates; and former faculty in finance at SDMIMD addressed PGDM 2017-19 Batch on December 28, 2018. Dr. Ullas focused his talk on CAPM Model and explained how portfolios have to handle with regards to risks and returns. Further, he touched upon CPM Line and the calculation of risk free return and how risk premium have to be arrived. During the Q&A session he explained the calculation of Beta with significance of Beta in market and gave explanation about the portfolio theory and efficient market hypothesis. The talk was very educative and informative

ANNUAL LEADERSHIP TALK 2019 
 

Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara Institute for Management Development (SDMIMD) organised the 11th edition of Annual Leadership Talk (ALT) on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 in SDMIMD Auditorium.  The talk was  delivered by Mr. Krishnakumar Natarajan, Executive Chairman, Mindtree. Natarajan was instrumental in setting up Mindtree’s U.S. operations, driving expansion in Europe and Asia Pacific regions, and transforming Mindtree’s IT services business. Today, his mission as Executive Chairman is to focus on leadership development and ensure a high quality of governance. He also actively mentors different business groups within the company and works closely with the start-up ecosystem to bring in innovative models of business transformation for clients.

SDMIMD in collaboration with EFMD & Third Sector Research Resource Centre, University of Mysore is organising one day symposium on Corporate Social Responsibility and Community Development on February 26, 2019. The symposium is proposed to discuss the broad philosophy behind the emphasis on social responsibility and how corporate bodies are rising to the occasion to meet this need.  We also wish to discuss the direction that these activities should take as well take a cue from current practices. 

Prof. Ulrich Hommel, Associate Director of EFMD &Chair Professor of Corporate Finance, EBS Business School, Belgium will deliver keynote address. The symposium features special talks by the senior corporate executives with practical exposure to CSR, invited lectures by the senior academician of international repute, deliberations by senior executives of NGOs, and panel discussion. The panel will be represented by industry, NGOs and academics.

The symposium is expected to cover various issues relating to CSR such as: Global perspectives of CSR, emerging issues in CSR, designing CSR projects, implementing CSR projects, CSR and sustainability of interventions: Opportunities and Challenges. The symposium could be attended by: academicians, executives of NGOs, and executives of corporate sector.

24TH ANNUAL SDMIMD CONVOCATION


On completion of the two-year learning process, the students of Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) of Batch 2017-19 will be receiving the degree during the 24th Annual Convocation. This dream day will be on Friday, March 29, 2019. Shri. Kamal Bali, Managing Director of Volvo India, Volvo Buses India Private Limited, will be the Chief Guest of this academic grandeur and will deliver the Keynote Address. Dr. D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman, SDMIMD will preside over the function. Eminent personalities from academic and corporate world are going to be invited to join the SDMIMD family in honouring the student in this awarding ceremony. 

  

This year's Startup Charcha is scheduled on Feb 7, 2019 at 2.30 pm. Startup Charcha 2019 by SDMites E-Cell

SDMIMD Entrepreneurship Cell (E-Cell) - Swayam organized its flagship event ‘Startup Charcha' on 7th February 2019. The program began with a Panel Discussion on the topic ‘Entrepreneurship: Issues, Challenges, and the Way Ahead’, moderated by Dr. M R Suresh, Professor – Marketing, SDMIMD and also the Coordinator of the event. The Distinguished Panellists were Mr. Sanjay Srinivasmurthy, Director-Silicon Road, Mr. Krishna Narayana, Managing Director of Shyama Jewels and Dr. M Sriram, Professor – Finance, SDMIMD. This was followed by an insightful talk by Mr Sanjaya Doreswamy, Founder - Kuteera Kitchen. The keynote address was delivered by Mr. Narendra Narayanan, Founder & Managing Director of Vinyas Innovative Technologies Pvt. Ltd, Mysuru. The charcha concluded with open forum having interaction between the students and the distinguished guests.

  

  

SDMIMD Welcomes Heilbronn University team


A group of 15 students and 2 faculties from Heilbronn University, Germany will be on an exchange tour to SDMIMD from 1st March 2019 to 8th March 2019. SDMIMD has arrangements with Heilbronn university for student and faculty exchange. During the week-long program, the visiting students will go through academic sessions, corporate visits, social projects as well as Yoga/wellness sessions. The team is led by Dean Dr. Stefan Wilms who will also hold a few sessions for SDMIMD students.
