A review of the answer sheet of @bishnu_dash04 as requested. I could have sent him a direct message, but I feel posting the review here would benefit others as well. I will be very honest in the review, so apologies in advance!
On opening the answer sheet, the first thing that struck me was that he had added the questions on top, maybe as an afterthought while revising. Now, why on earth would you do that? The examiner knows the questions perfectly well, so it was a waste of time, but more importantly, it soured the look of the very first page. In any answer paper, a good first impression goes a long way in determining the final outcome in terms of evaluation, and his was not very convincing.
Now, as a thumb rule, there should be no errors of any sort, grammatical or otherwise, in the paper, and especially not on the first page. Moreover, there should be no cuttings or strikeouts, as 3 hours is a lot of time to think and plan out every answer perfectly. Sadly, his answer sheet has both.
Another small thing I take care of is to leave at least 3 lines after every answer, to make for a better layout and to improve overall presentation. That way, if I want to add some details later, I have ample space to do it without compromising on the look or presentation.
Now coming to the essay. I prefer to start off with a famous quote (memorise a few on general topics, they will come handy) or a catchy phrase that immediately catches the attention of the reviewer. His essay starts off in one long paragraph that extends well into the next page. Now I would never make an effort to read that. No one would. The first paragraph should be short and simple, and limited to 4-5 lines at the most.
We were given a word limit of 500 words. It is not humanely possible to adhere to that limit, as that would mean finishing an essay in one and a half pages, but that also doesn't mean that one can go on writing three answers worth of stuff. A cursory glance at his answer tells me that at around 10 words a line and 25 odd lines a page, he has written well over 1500 words, which is a bit of a shocker really. A 500 word essay should never run longer than 3 pages (short enough to let you get off with around 700 words worth of thoughts!).
My strategy is to break my answer into small paragraphs of around 7-8 lines each, with each para focussing on one aspect of the answer. (Even this review should give you a very good idea on how to go about it!). His essay has paragraphs that run more than 2 pages long, which means that the examiner might have just turned the pages to the end without really being able to grasp anything substantial from the whole piece. And that, I have to say, seems extremely likely to have happened.
P.S. - Choosing a topic that very few people would attempt really matters I think, and if you write that well enough, you score well too. I for one attempted the essay on football, and being deeply interested in sports it was a cakewalk for me. I am fairly certain that I probably knew more details about Indian football then the examiners themselves, and essentially wrote a pretty self satisfying essay on the evolution of the sport from the 19th century to the present day.
As for the other questions, I basically had zero preparation, and gave the exam with no expectations at all (maybe that helped me :D ). I just concentrated on neat presentation and clarity of thought, without being repetitive or generic. My answers could be termed 'hatke'- far away from the run-of-the-mill stuff that the examiners expected. And that is all the difference there is!
Note: All views above are personal. Suggestions are more than welcome, as I too am still a learner (85/100 in the paper notwithstanding
