Venue : IIM Bangalore.

Preparation : 1/5
Performance :1-2/5
======================
PI experience : I was the first to be interviewed in my panel. Panel 3 (M23).
P1: A gentle guy.
P2: Slightly old but was the one who asked me the majority of questions and countered my replies virtually every time.
P3: Again a gentle guy.
Would refer to myself as M.
========================
P2: Good afternoon, So did you have your lunch?
M : Yes Sir.
P2: So what difference you found out between Patna and Bangalore.
M : Sir, the transport connectivity at Bangalore is really good.
P2: But the traffic is terrible..
M: Yes Sir.
P2: You work currently?
M : Yes Sir in an education start up as an IT consultant and our flagship product is IAS test preparation.
P2: I see. So how many people take the UPSC?
M: (Oh teri!! Yeh to nahi pata... L ) Sir, I am more concerned with the technology side of our products so as of now , I don't have too much knowledge about the number of test takers for the UPSC ( Bad start!!!)
P2: And , how many take CAT?
M: around 1-2 lakhs though the number of seats is about 3600 only.
P2: So you know about CAT but not about IAS students?
M : Sir, since I was also a CAT aspirant hence I have a slightly better idea as far as CAT is concerned.
P2: How many teachers are there for your test prep?
M : Told them about that.
P1: So , did you guys reach the break even?
M : No, Sir not as of now as the company was started only a few years back.
P3 : Where did you get the money to start up the venture?
M : The money was invested by the MD of the company himself and we didn't have any venture capitalist or any angel investor.
P2 : Do you think it's ethical for coaching centres to help students crack the exams considering that some students are not so deserving and they get into institutes by the help of coaching institutes.
M : Sir, I think it's fairly ethical as we provide them the directions and just augment their preparation and streamline it.
P2 : But still...
(Before I could present my case, I was interrupted by P3).
P3: What do you do at the company?
M: My role is to align the technology with the goals of the company , e,g Right now to increase the profits, we have developed an android app for the IAS aspirants and the pilot has been conducted successfully.
P3: How will you charge the students for the app?
M : By analyzing our costs , by considering the prices offered by our competitors and also consulting the students.
P3 : Why MBA?
M: Told them about my interest in management consultancy and that my knowledge was limited to the technology side. MBA will help me by exposing me to a variety of industries and increase my knowledge base too.
P2: What will you do after your MBA?
M: I would like to work for the management consultancy companies such as McKinsey or the Big4.
P2: I see.. but what exactly do these companies do?
M : Sir, they provide consultancies in various industries such as Telecommunications, Healthcare etc . They provide help to their clients in increasing their market shares, by providing suggestions on mergers and acquisitions ,in divestments etc.
P2 : Ok. So how does a fresh graduate who has no practical knowledge in an industry help the industry, say a liquor company.
M: They collect the information and analyze it to reach to a conclusion and they seek the information from their clients too.
P2. Fine.. So what are the problems facing the AERO Industry in India?
M : (Haaiyen.. Ee kahan se.. ) Sir, the major issue is the Aviation fuel which accounts for almost 40 % of the total cost of the flight... Apart from that, there is a cut throat competition in India in the aero industry in India as there are many players.
P2: What should companies do to improve the situation?
M : Sir, they would benefit if the cost of aviation fuel comes down...
P2 : (interrupting).. But that's the role of the Govt. What should the companies do?
M: Sir, the companies can benefit by concentrating only on the profit making routes and not venture into the hinterlands.. ( Gave them the example of Spice Jet Bombardier which was used to connect even the hinterlands but it added more overhead to the operations rather than the profits.)
P2: Which all are the major players?
M : told.
P2: So, is the industry making profits?
M: No Sir. AFAIK, only Indigo is making profits..
P3: Why is that?
M: Told them that they are only concentrating on a few routes which are profit making and don't venture into the hinterlands as was the case with SpiceJet.
P3: Do you think the e-commerce is a bubble?
M: No Sir. In fact, I think there is a whole lot potential to it which remains to be tapped. And, with the advent of Digital India conditions are bound to improve in the country for e-commerce sector.
P3 : Hmm.. Is Flipkart making profits?
M : No Sir. They are trying to get the customer loyalty..
P2: Amazon??
M: No Sir. It also doesn't make profits.
P2: So how is that Flipkart will make profits even though Amazon is not making profits?
M: Flipkart , as of now, is trying to get the customer loyalty and it by its inventory model is trying to provide the best services to the customers.
P1: (Now from SOP) What advice will you give the Govt for Digital India?
M : I would request the Govt not to look at the auction simply as a source of revenue. The telecom sector is already In debt of 275000 crore. If the prices of the auction don't go too high, the companies could allocate more funds to the capital investment and provide better wireless services which then will help Digital India. Moreover, the Govt also shouldn't indulge in artificial scarcity as was the case now when 15 MHZ In the 2100 MHz frequency was simply not allocated.
P2: Why shouldn't the Govt view the spectrum sale as a source of revenue? Every other country does.
M: Sir, if the Govt gives a bit of leniency they might invest the surplus in the capital investment and would be able to provide better service in the wireless domain. In this respect, Digital India would benefit because the connectivity will improve.
P2: I still don't believe that concepts such as Digital India is for real.. (sort of propaganda). Tell me how will the farmers benefit from Digital India.
M: They will get the information regarding the agricultural products with relative ease.
P3: But , there are radio programmes for the same. Why Digital India?
M: Sir, the radio programmes are available at fixed timings but with net connectivity , the farmers will be able to get the information on the go..
P2: What on the "go" ? Farmers tend to be at their place only. They aren't quite mobile...
(As I was going to answer this.. P2 asked again) : Tell me what will the consultant to the Govt do? The Govt actually doesn't listen to anybody else or for that matter not the IAS officers do..
M: Sir, efforts might be taken to change the status quo.. and I do feel that the Govt does listen to the consultants..e.g In my opinion, the Govt does pay heed to the advice of the Chief Economic Advisor of India , Mr. Arvind Subramaniam..
P2: Is it? Tell me the educational qualification of Mr. Arvind?
M: I am not sure Sir.. (I don't know how I was able to foolishly remember that he was from the IIT..!!! My bad.. He did his MBA from IIM A actually)
P2 : Ok, we are done.. Any questions for us..
M: (Politely) No Sir.
That's all folks.. Please pour in with your views.. Would be grateful for that. The interview did seem a bit stressful but I was able to maintain my composure throughout.

I visited DM South West Delhi office today with my friend to check if they will be issuing NC OBC certificates to Jats or not as validity of NCOBC certificate ends every 31st March. They said no certificates will be issued and all those certificates that have been issued till now stands cancelled since Supreme court has cancelled the reservation given to Jats...There were several applications kept on the table of the officer on which he was just mentioning 'Cancelled because of order from supreme court'...I asked him that Jats are still there in the central list but he said that orders of supreme court have to be implemented with immediate effect. Can anything be done now as I think at time of admissions, institutes would be asking for fresh NCOBC certificates? Has anyone else also visited the issuing authority which issued them the certificate?
Puys IIFT result is out ...can anyone confirm if they have considered Jats as OBC ...
