Why are 600 people waitlisted in general category? It's not like there's a chance for even WL 300 to clear, so why even bother?

As per its policy DMS IIT-Delhi does not reveal information on waitlist movement as it keeps changing every year and it might misguide a candidate. Also, this year the admission criteria was different.
However, all the waitlisted students are called for a spot counselling near the joining date and all the remaining seats (if any) will be allotted based on the merit ranking of the students who show up.
