IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR CONVERTED STUDENTS
A recently passed alumnus of IIMK told me the following about IIMs in general and IIM Kozhikode in particular. I thought sharing this would be helpful for all the readers to prepare for what’s coming and how to react to that.
Disclaimer: None of this info is to discourage converted students from joining K. In fact, students at almost all the IIMs and similar level non-IIMs do the following in the name of ‘culture’. The intent behind sharing this is to tell you what is important and what is NOT, in forthcoming days!

The ‘seniors’ initially (in a week or two / might have already) will make a group (on Facebook / Google) where they disseminate information to the new batch. There, they purely act as mafias. You make one mistake while asking a question or become little informal, and you’ll get a long note from some senior, basically insulting you in public. They also keep a watch on your comments made in Whatsapp Groups etc which are supposed to be dedicated PGP23 groups but these people are present anyway. They use the Google Group platform to give assignments (may not have started yet but will start in mid June) and provide supposedly ‘useful’ (which is absolutely useless and does not help you much because many people at IIMK were there who didn’t join Google group and did well throughout) information. You supposedly need to submit these assignments by the 'stipulated deadline'. No body discloses the actual punishment for not meeting the deadlines, because actually there is none. Actually, only Placecom can actually fine you (only after you join campus) in monetary and non-monetary ways (banning you from certain processes etc.) but you need not bow down to their dictatorship as well. There are certain norms where you can bypass the 'stipulated' rules and use the loopholes. Placecom will be marketed as the most powerful and ruthless body on campus, which it is but don't listen to whatever bullshit they tell.
Other student bodies have no legal power to punish you and hence one should use his/her own discretion in all of this. These assignments could become useful if the seniors really go through them and give you feedback. But, in all likelihood, nobody is going to even open your files. These assignments are another instrument to harass you. Legally, they can’t harass/punish you anyhow, so they must devise other means to harass you psychologically. This is a toxic mentality that makes people derive pleasure from harassing fellow beings. But as so-called ‘juniors’, people will follow their ‘respectable/to be respected seniors’.
My opinion is that in a B-school, nothing like senior or junior works, in practice because somebody as fresher may be your ‘senior’ and somebody with 5 years of work ex will be joining along with you. So it really should not matter which batch you are from. One should use common sense and logic in making decisions, along with others’ suggestions.
Initially I also did some assignments but towards the mid, seriously stopped doing it. This continued even after joining the college. There is generally a hue and cry about the assignments and people will be copy-pasting each other’s assignments. People fell really sick (due to lack of sleep and mental pressure) but still continued doing the assignment considering them very seriously. Though on the surface, it may appear that those questions are very good and you’ll get insights by answering them, I would suggest to cherry-pick the questions (majorly the HR ones) and prepare (based on your own convenience) for your Summer-Placement preparation. This is about the assignments part. Actually the common notion that initially B-school is very busy and you get to sleep only 4 hours a day is rubbish. During our time also, the environment was such but if you really want to, you can find time for yourself and even sleep well. After you join college, some of the rules may be ‘created’ by the ‘seniors’ for the ‘juniors’ like not allowed to some particular areas in college till they allow it. For eg: we were restricted to visit the gym, not dine in a particular mess till they ‘allow’ it etc.

ANOTHER IMPORTANT ASPECT which you need to know is the interactions. Generally, it happens after 10pm in the night till 3-4am. Under this name ‘interactions’, they technically rag you. They can't formally call it ragging simply because ragging is a crime. It is not a 3-idiots type ragging but you may be made to dance, sing, abuse, create a vulgar story/poem, tell / narrate a story of your first relationship and the list is endless. I assure you that there is absolutely no physical abuse. However, you may be verbally abused. After doing this for a few days (typically a week), they ‘break the hoax’ and start behave friendly with you. This ‘supposedly’ marks the start of a very strong ‘senior-junior’ bonding. You may create the bonds (with senior batch as well as your batch), if required, even after not participating in these activities. And actually speaking, seniors are more desperate to spread ‘gyaan’ as compared to juniors seeking it, simply because this very act makes them feel knowledgeable, helpful and most importantly, influential.
One may be fine with doing all the above mentioned tasks but I suggest not to be a part of this because, practically thinking, one can save lot of time daily. As another user ‘aarkaye’ (whom I don’t have any connections with) also mentioned in a post dated 18/05/19 08:07pm, it’s totally okay if you don’t participate in all this mess. No one will care after a week about who participated and who didn’t. This may sound childish, but participating in all of this impacts you psychologically. When you start copying your assignments from the very beginning, you are adopting a habit which will be with you till the next few months (at-least) and you are likely to follow the same in academics as well (from my batch experience). After spending the time initially in these assignments and entertaining your seniors in nights at the expense of self esteem, you psychologically get tired. It may not exactly get conveyed to you at this point in time. You’ll feel this when you actually spend some days at campus. Now, by not engaging all of this, you may invest your time in:
a)Actually studying
b) Certificate Courses
c) Pursue an interest / hobby.
ADVICE: If you feel insulted or abused in any manner, feel free to exercise any of the following effective tools:
1. Make a group of friends and oppose the practice together. One man army won't help much
2. File a complaint to the officials in the campus (Dean Academics, Director etc). Anti Ragging Committee is a useless committee and hence it's advisable to directly approach people who are in positions.
3. Complaint online on the Anti Ragging Website. This commands immediate action and is a robust mechanism for those in need.

Student bodies (Council, PlaceCom and others), after reading all of this, will try to explain to you (via online platforms and in person when you reach campus) that I, a random Pagalguy user, is absolutely wrong and nothing of this sort happens. You should be wise enough to believe that nobody in position would ever admit that they do any wrong. Just use your own judgements of right/wrong while making decisions.
Similar things happen at other IIMs but for Kozhikode, I have collected this specific information and hence, sharing it with you all. There would be good / bad, all sorts of people in the senior batch. Therefore, it becomes very important to carefully decide whom you would like to associate yourselves with, as 'juniors'. All of us are getting into B-school with some ambition. In future, we will be managers. And therefore, I believe, we know what is right (& what is not) for us. I think, all of you are smart enough to plan your moves at Kozhikode.

i see a lot of the Konverts worrying about not getting accepting into the google groups. its alright, dont worry. the rejection is a part of the hazing. and a majority of the things that'll happen afterwards too will be the same. there'll be some information that'll be exclusive to the group, this you can get if you ask your fellow Konverts who have been accepted in. do not fret over not being accepted into these groups. its alright. all of this rejection is by design and is intended to make you anxious. if nothing else try getting in touch with your seniors on fb...
I am very confused between IIM TRICHY OR IIM RANCHI ...as I want to do Finance and no one in my family or friends circle doing MBA . If u give honest suggestion it would be very helpful as I can only pay acceptance fee of one college
