Answer: as far as
The correct idiomatic usage is €˜as far as €™ something can go. Option B and D sound extremely confusing as they add parameters. While option C sounds needlessly verbose. Hence, option A is the right choice.

idioms -
as far as - to the distance of/ to the extent that
how far - to what extent, distance etc

looking at the meanings, it seems option 3 would suffice.
can u plz explain what is wrong with option 3?

SET 35 (SC)Choose the answer that produces the most effective sentence; this answer should be clear and exact, without awkwardness, ambiguity, redundancy, or grammatical error.7>Johnson, whom according to the local community is the twenty-first century Don Quixote, is fanatically idealistic in his approach to correcting modern society's incorrigible wrongs that have corrupted human hearts and minds.a whom according to the local community is the twenty-first century Don Quixote, is fanatically idealistic in his approach to correcting modern society's incorrigible wrongs that have corrupted b who according to the local community is the twenty-first century Don Quixote, is fanatically idealistic with his approach to correcting modern society's incorrigible wrongs that have infused corruption in c whom according to the local community is the twenty-first century Don Quixote, is fanatically idealistic in his approach to correcting modern society's incorrigible wrongs that has corrupted d who according to the local community is the twenty-first century Don Quixote, is fanatically idealistic in his approach to correcting modern society's incorrigible wrongs that have corrupted e who according to the local community is the twenty-first century Don Quixote, is fanatically idealistic through his approach to correcting modern society's incorrigible wrongs that has corruptedQ.8The insecurities of the suburbia is heightened at a time when economic crisis has gripped the western world and it is this state of affairs that is compelling the western nations to witness the rise of financially powerful and independent Asian countries.a The insecurities of the suburbia is heightened at a time when economic crisis has gripped the western world and it is this state of affairs that is compelling the western nations to witness b The insecurities of the suburbia are heightened at a time when economic crises has gripped the western world and it is this state of affairs that is compelling the western nations to witness c The insecurities of the suburbia are heightened at a time when economic crisis has gripped the western world and it is this state of affairs that is compelling the western nations to witness d The insecurities of the suburbia is heightened at a time when economic crises is gripping the western world and it is this state of affairs that is compelling the western nations to come together and become a witness to e The insecurities of the suburbia are heightened at a time when economic crisis have gripped the western world and it is this state of affairs that is compelling the western nations to witness9>The success rates of recent open offers seem to have gone up as the stock markets fell from their high in January.a seem to have gone up as the stock markets fell from their high in January. b seem to have gone up as the stock markets fell from the high in January. c seem to has gone up as the stock markets fell from their high in January. d seem to have gone up as the stock markets fell from their high on January. e seems to have gone up as the stock markets fell from their high in January.10>Discarded human skin can be used to test new drugs and cosmetics, a researcher has found, sparing animals much agony in test laboratories.a a researcher has found, sparing animals much agony in test laboratories. b a researcher had found, sparing animals much agony in test laboratories. c sparing animals much agony in test laboratories, a researcher has found. d researcher has found, sparing animals much agony in test laboratory. e a researcher has found, spared animals much agony in test laboratories.
OA:
7> D
Sentence a is incorrect because it uses the relative pronoun 'whom' in place of 'who'.
Sentence b uses the preposition 'with his approach' in place of 'in his approach' and it is too wordy 'that have infused corruption'; which to an extent changes the intended meaning.
Sentence c uses the relative pronoun 'whom' in place of 'who and the verb 'has' has been used incorrectly with the plural subject 'modern society's incorrigible wrongs'.
Sentence d uses an incorrect preposition 'through his approach' and there is a subject verb agreement error because 'has' is used. Sentence d uses the relative pronoun 'who' appropriately and it is also grammaticaly correct.

8> C
Sentence a is incorrect because the subject 'the insecurities of suburbia' is plural. Therefore, the verb 'is' should be replaced with 'are'.
Sentence b is incorrect because the sentence pertains to a single crisis, namely – economic crisis. So, the use of the plural form - 'crises' is inappropriate here.
Sentence d is incorrect because there is a subject verb agreement error – 'is' used for the plural subject 'insecurities. Also, the plural form of 'crisis' with an 'e' is used in the sentence. Note that the sentence is extremely wordy and some of the words are redundant.
Sentence e uses the plural verb 'have' for the singular form–crisis. Therefore, it is incorrect.
Sentence c uses the correct verb form 'are' with the plural–insecurities. Also, 'crisis' is singular and it is followed by a singular verb–has. Hence, c is correct.

9>A
Only option (a) uses the correct forms of the verb as well as the preposition. Choice (b) is incorrect as it incorrectly uses 'the' to describe 'high', choice (c) is incorrect as it uses the singular present tense 'has' instead of present plural 'have', choice (d4) is incorrect as it uses the incorrect preposition 'on'. Choice (e) is incorrect as it uses the singular form 'seems' which is incorrect as the subject is 'success rates' which is plural.

10>A
The underlined part has no error thus making choice (a) correct. Choice (b) is incorrect as 'had found' is in the past tense and is incongruous with the present tense of the sentence. Choice (c) is incorrect as the phrase 'a researcher has found' has been used incorrectly and seems to be a dangling modifier. (d) is incorrect as the indefinite article is missing before the word 'researcher' and the singular form of 'laboratory' is incorrect as it is used without a word symbolizing its singularity. Choice (e) is incorrect as 'spared' used in it is incongruous with the present tense of the sentence, since the sentence is in the present tense, 'sparing' which is in present tense, should be used.

SET 37 (PC)

Q.1
The Case Foundation is embarking on an effort to test the potential of citizen-led philanthropy via the Internet. Starting at 3 p.m. on Thursday, readers of Parade magazine and members of the Causes section of the Facebook Web site can enter a contest to win a total of $500,000 and $250,000, for their favorite charities, provided by Case. The prizes will go to the charities and causes that attract the greatest numbers of unique donors, rather than the one that raises the most money._______________________

a “Small amounts of money given by large numbers of individuals can be combined to do great things,” she said.
b Randy Siegel of Parade saw the program as “a wonderful way to give our readers a firsthand look at how the Internet and technology have revolutionized charitable giving.”
c The contest is one of a string of efforts by Case to determine what role online technologies can have in the charity field.
d “Philanthropy shouldn't be defined as a bunch of rich people writing big checks,” said Jean Case, who founded the Case Foundation with her husband.
e Parade and Causes are eager to learn from the information gleaned from the contest.

Q.2
Early attempts at simulating human intelligence revealed that artificial cognitive systems that are not already equipped with a fair amount of “innate knowledge” about a particular problem domain are unable to solve even the easiest problems. In the 1970s and 1980s, the work of scientists like Noam Chomsky, Jerry Fodor, or David Marr further undermined the idea of the mind as a “blank slate” which acquires knowledge about the world by means of only a couple of general learning mechanisms. Their findings suggested instead that the mind incorporates a number of cognitive subsystems that are triggered only by a certain kind of input.___________________________________

a While Marr was working on the neuroscience of vision; Chomsky famously criticized the behaviorist idea that language acquisition is just an ordinary kind of learning that follows the stimulus-response model.
b According to Chomsky, a child cannot learn her first language through observation because the available stimuli neither enable her to produce grammatically correct nor prevent her from producing grammatically incorrect sentences.
c Instead, Chomsky argued, we possess a “language acquisition device” which, rather than extracting all information from the world through some general mechanism, comes equipped with a certain amount of “innate knowledge.”
d Just as our body contains a number of innate, genetically predisposed organs that serve a specific function, our mind also contains a number of information processing systems.
e The so called mental organs or modules in Fodor's terminology are designed to perform a particular cognitive function.

Q.3
If we think of a progression from Homer to Hesiod in terms of a passage from concern with human action, its sanctions and consequences, to concern with the role of the gods, not only relative to man but also with respect to the constitution of our world, the emergence of the Ionian natural philosophers can be seen as a new concern with the world itself and with man as a part of that world rather than as moral agent. To be sure, Ionian natural philosophy retains its links with the myths which form the background of the epics as well, but the beginnings of philosophy appear as a deliberate movement away from an anthropomorphic interpretation of the universe and a consequent decrease in interest in man as moral agent.__________________

a Xenophanes and Heraclitus exhibit a deep concern with conduct.
b The Pythagoreans express concern with a scientific explanation of the world.
c This is present as well in Empedocles and in Democritus.
d We cannot say, therefore, that concern with man begins with the Sophists.
e There is no complete break, of course.

Q.4
A career goal is a great tool in your hand to manage your career effectively. A career goal is like a compass on a dark and endless ocean and it guides your progress in the proper direction. Without a compass, you would be lost in the high seas. Similarly, without a proper career goal, you would be lost in the world of jobs and will find yourself unable to reach your full potential._______________

a This will help you stay focused on your chosen career path and work as great indicators to measure the progress you have made.
b Setting a career goal for yourself may be one of the most effective tools you have to motivate yourself and to make significant progress in your career.
c Career goals also give you directions that you need to follow to reach your full potential.
d In a nutshell, persuasive speeches increase your knowledge which helps reduce your stress and anxiety.
e Sticking to the plan should not become your goal in itself.

Q.5
Drug addiction is a serious worldwide problem with strong genetic and environmental influences. So far different technologies have revealed a variety of genes and biological processes underlying addiction. However, individual technology can be biased and render only an incomplete picture. Studying individual or a small number of genes is like looking at pieces of a jigsaw puzzle - only when you gather most of the pieces from different places and arrange them together in an orderly fashion do interesting patterns emerge.________________________

a They made this gene atlas freely available in the first online molecular database for addiction, with extensive annotations and friendly web interface.
b Assembling the pieces of evidence together, the authors identified 18 molecular pathways that are statistically enriched in the addiction-related genes.
c They then identified five pathways that are common to addiction to four different substances.
d A team, led by Liping Wei, collected items of evidence linking genes and chromosome regions to addiction based on single-gene strategies, or genetic studies.
e These common pathways may underlie shared rewarding and response mechanisms and may be targets for effective treatments for a wide range of addictive disorders.
