Anybody applied to IIM-Visakhapatnam?
2019 FPM interview experience, IIM Bangalore
Area: Finance
CAT score: 94 percentile (English section was a little screwed; 86 percentile)
Profile:
Work ex: Vice-President, Market Risk, Leading European Bank. Earlier worked in Credit Suisse, Nomura, Capital One. Total experince of 13+ years; 5 years in USA. Visiting faculty (Financial Risk Mgmt) for PGP students in lower-rung IIMs. Referrals from 2 senior Directors (Inv. Banks), who directly managed me.
Professional qualifications:
CFA charter (CFA Inst., USA),
FRM (GARP);
Currently pursuing actuarial sciences (IAI).
Education:
Class X: 90%, Class XII: 72%, B. Tech.: 77%, MBA (VGSoM): 8.7 CGPA.
Faculty interviewer: 2 senior profs (do not remember the names)
Interview duration: 25 minutes.
Questions asked:
1. Brief of work-experience -- Told
2. Why FPM now? -- They were not convinced that my industry exposure will be helpful in pursuing research
3. Why low marks in Class XII? (had scored 45% in vernacular literature)
4. How will I take the rigour of academics after being in industry for long? -- I had completed CFA in 1.5 years (Dec-Jun-Jun), FRM also in first attempt and currently doing actuarial science, and all of these while working in a high-pressure job env, but they were not convinced.
5. Enquired about my writing skills -- Told that as part of job, need to write detailed model validation reports, market risk methodology requirements, documents of 100+ pages over 4-6 months of time, still they were not convinced.
6. How will I survive on a stipend, given that I have a very high current salary? -- Again they were not convinced with my answers.
7. Which other institutes have I applied -- None, as I cannot move out of BLR due to family constraints.
I was a little disappointed because they did not ask me any technical questions at all to judge my capability. But, I guess thay are so experienced and probably know more effective ways to judge a candidate's suitability for the FPM program.
