Hi There,
well today wasn't the best of days for me.....The IMI shortlist finally came out and guess what I didn't make it through to the next round with a 93.13%ile in CAT cz the cut off was 93.65.......so kinda depressed and now more desperate to convert the SIMS call........

Hey Digi,
nice of you to upload a few case studies.......and i believe people have responded well to it.......the solutions that they have come out with seem quite appropriate.....however more than the solution here, its the path via which you arrive at it.........let me try......step by step........
lets take the frst case study...........

Step 1....SITUATION ANALYSIS
Gautam Mukherjee GM of a foreign bank....recruits 5-6 people from b-schools ever year and they are doing very well...his selection is good.......
Vijay's project -grand success.....offered better paying job with better perks.
Vijay is an asset to the bank and the bank doesn't want to lose him.

sry have a power failure
will continue as soon as the lights come back on......

hey guys!

I would suggest all of us to go thru Harward Business Reviews,it wud be of great help...Also all non techies! Please dont think U all guys lack something. Now U cant go back and do an engineering course, what matters most is ur attitude and the thing that how much U r clear with ur goals...engineers are not some superior ppl, only an engineer knows how he has become one and what all knowledge does he possess(being an engineer I can say that)...

hey rocky!
I m from mumbai and I m going to pune
Great...
read the case studies and wonderful inputs from u all...
here's my contibution...

CASE1...
Gautam Mukherjee should tell Vikram to train some other employee working in ANZee Bank for atleast oNe month..and till the time that employee gets the same kind of work results and clientle like Vijay, the training should carry on.Once AnZEE Bank has produced another bright worker,Gautam can relieve Vijay off his duties and Gautam can proceed further with his new job...
(Otherwise use Rocky's points....better!!)

CASE 4....
A pipeline or a canal from the nearby river or distributery can help to solve the problem. If the temple can be shifted safely to a new location and the villagers convinced of the long term gains, the alternate plan to increase irrigated area by 15% can work well.

Kindly pass comments on each other's reply too so that we know the mistakes...
Happy Republic Day to all of us...!!
  1. Thanks sims007..for all ur good wishes..
  2. So digi..did u get the idea on case studies...lets discuss some more frnds..
  3. Raghav..holding a conference on yahoo is a good idea..tell me the procedure please.
  4. Thanks for the info saurabh..me going to stay with my relatives in Pune(found one..!!)...and see u all there!!!
  5. Saurabh regarding the marks in acadmics..one can just confidently say... now is the time to improve and get better marks..!!
  6. Guys any idea about display of GD/PI dates of SIMS..just visted the site..no sign yet..!!
  7. Hey Rocky..dont worry..engineer or non engineer..everyone has to undergo the same procedure for entry into a B-School....what the whole thing is that engineers will be asked questions in their field..while u'l be asked questions i ur field of Graduation...so just brush up ur knowledge and give ur best...
  8. Diksha, when and where do u have ur GD/PI...what other calls u have..??
  9. Akshay,Sidhant,Raghav,rainbowsparks,ice...good inputs frm u all...
keep going folks...!!

result nahin ayyaaaaaaa..i mean sched nahin ayyaaaaa:neutral:

Hey there,
People it has been most informative listening to your views regarding case studies.......one can deduce that perhaps the most important factor that will help in arriving at viable solutions is common sense. After all why are we planning to do an mba? It is so that we can have the necessary skillset required to make such complicated decisions.........regarding the case studies discussed i'm not sure if every person can arrive at the exact same solution, people have different thought processes thus giving rise to conflicting solutions and personally i believe that the true test of a case study is not to arrive merely at solutions but to arrive at a consensus regarding the solutions if it is possible at all. Ladies and gentlemen i currently do not have the resources due to my location, which will enable me to get some gd/pi training...........thus i presume for me it will more be a case of on the job training. Considering my at best atrocious academic record and lack of experience i feel the interview is going to be a real interrogation for me. But then answering tough questions is what being a manager is all about.......in fact i'm actually looking forward to being asked about my dismal academic performance because it is mere confidence and common sense that i'm putting my stakes on......... what can i say........i've a penchant for being an accidental hero. ANd no word on the gd/pi schedule for the time being..........will keep checking.

Sorry People about last night but then as i told you had a power failure....so i'm continuing from where I left.....

Step 2.....ASSUMPTIONS
The success of the project was solely bcz of vijay.
It has also been assumed that if Vijay leaves the bank the customers will also shift......

Step 3....PROBLEM DEFINATION
So the main problem here is that the company wants to retain Vijay at the same time, this would mean offering him an immmediate promotion that would superseade 8 other employees who have been working equally well....

Step 4.....OBJECTIVE
Suggest a plan of action that would go in the best interest of the bank at the same time keeping its future growth in mind.

Step 5....GENERAL ALTERNATIVES
Vijay can be allowed to go and work for the other bank after serving the appopriate notice as
1) the customers may be retained to ANZee through the efforts of other eight employees.
2)Person appointed in lieu of Vijay may be able to serve the existing clinets in a better way and also, he may be able to bring many more clients for the bank .

As given by Raghav.....
- Promote him- Yes it might sound a blatant statement, but we should remember it as an MNC bank and not an PSU .In MNCs they have a work culture where performance gets rewarded and I feel after 5 yrs vijay needs a promotion.

- If still u r in a flux to promote him then give him a plum foreign posting which he cant afford to resist for a short duration.

-And still he gets unmanageable then talk with him ask him for some time appoint a replacement for him ask Vijay to train this new appointee and just relax coz u have got a replacement.

As given by Rocky..........

Its nice to have a lot of alternatives but since there is a time constarint its better that the group comes up with a max of 2-3 alternatives cz as the next step says we have to evaluate the alternatives.......

Step 6.....EVALUATE ALTERNATIVES
If Vijay given promotion then the bank doesn't lose its imp employee but it creates a sense of hostility amongst the 8 other employees and they will feel cheated and that is bound to affect the work that they put in.....
So even though for the time being the bank might do good business its long term goals are sure to be affected since in organisations its the team that plays an imp role rather than a single individual......
plus if his demands met right now he might ask for more some time down the line..........
However if he's retained it will benefit the bank since he was involved in a successful project that would have given him a lot of confidence and quality experience............

So you basically go thru the pros of cons of all the alternatives that the group comes up with and thats why trying to keep the nbr of alternatives less will work to the advantage of the group..............

Step 7......RECOMMENDATIONS
Based on the above evaluation of the alternatives recommend a suitable plan of action that has the least cons.........
in this case could be......Gautam go and talk to vijay and try to asses him as to even if given what he's asking for will he commit say about another 2 years with the bank.....if no then no point giving in to his demands....if he is then try and negotiate with him so that he agrees for the least......
at the same time talking and conyeing the entire situation to the other 8 employees who will be affected will be a good idea and asking for their suggestions will make them feel a part of the bank and they will then be able to put the bank's interest in front of their own...................
At the same time gautam can try and make sure that the success of a project, in future , are not credited to a single individual but to the entire team to avoid such a problem in future.........

So this is basicall how the group has go about in a case study......step by step in a sequence so that the group moves forward in a specific direction....plus the panel don't expect you to come out with a really good solution....they just want to see how as a group you asses a situation presented to you..........the above approach will convey to them that your thought process is logical and sequntial.........thats all they wany to see cz how to come up with good solutions is something that they are going to teach you in the MBA course...................

comments to the above are most welcome............

Akshay

another CASE study to solve

CON IN DOTCOM
A dim light lit the corner of the fifth floor office. Jay Menon sat alone at his desk, lost in thoughts. Myworld.com was his baby. He had nurtured the dream from his b-school days. He always wanted to be an entrepreneur. After graduating from Paramount Institute of Management Jay, then 26, joined a dotcom incubator. He had the opportunity to work for a number of startups. And then came the big day. On his 27th birthday Jay launched his own dotcom. Myworld.com. It was the first horizontal portal in the country providing service in four Indian languages. And eighteen months down the line he was seeing his world fall apart. The world, that he had nourished with his own hands.
Jay had carelessly piled up some papers on his desk. One of the papers particularly had troubled him over the week. It was from his right hand man, Sanket Kulkarni. Jay knew that if there was someone he could depend upon in troubled time, he would be Sanket and the memo was the last thing that was expected from him. In fact they were classmates at Paramount. Sanket had a computer science background and he joined a web development company after finishing b-school. When Jay invited him, Sanket was overjoyed.
Sanket wrote, "Jay, what is happening at Myworld during the last six months does very little to comfort me. I realize that Myworld thrives on content and we must do everything to see that the portal carries a lot of stuff. But it is important that finally it makes sense for the customer to log on. We entice our customers to plunge into pristine waters and when they do so they find that the place is no more than a ditch. We need to understand the customer, his needs and give them just what they want. Customers should find navigating our site to be easy, quick, responsive and rewarding. We must not forget that in this country, customers pay for every minute that they spend on-line and the pinch is very painful. They are doing too many things in too short a time. We must help the customer to identify the message in the clutter.
I think your content guys are just going too far. They are too far overloading the ship to make it comfortable for sailing smoothly. The Plimsoll line was crossed more than once. You are aware that our site had crashed on five occasions last month. That was 120 minutes of total downtime, and you know how painful that is for our business. I hope that you understand the situation and would repose fast."
Sanket had never been so acerbic about the content people. Pranav Das headed the content section. Before joining Myworld.com, Pranav worked for "The Expression", the largest circulating daily in this country. Pranav was a postgraduate in journalism and also had a diploma in Media Management in his kitty. Content was the key for Myworld and Jay thought that Pranav was the right fit. Pranav managed to get four of his former colleagues at Expression to join Myworld. Together they formed the content group. Pranav reported to Jay. He had joined Myworld with a big bang. Jay remembered his maiden address at Myworld. Pranav said, "The key to succeed is to have different reasons for the customer to come to you. And when the customers come over to us we must ensure that they stick around. Customers experience on Myworld must be like an adventure trip. We must give them countless options. Our role lies in creating expectations. Customers must begin to believe that each successive click would lead them to more enchanting, more interesting and more desirable pages. We must provide them the access, the key to bliss. And then induce them to use the key." Jay believed that content was the lifeline for the venture and the content guys cannot be kept discontented. He offered Pranav the best compensation package, including an Opel Astra and company leased apartment.
When Jay started Myworld it was one of its kind portal. Myworld had tie-up with some of the local newspapers for news, weather reports, stock market analysis and commentaries on current issues. Most of the content was outsourced to professionals and free-lancers. In-house content team collated the stuff and packed it into an aesthetically pleasing composition. The Technicals department headed by Sanket developed the databases and application programmes that enabled the content to be hosted on the site. Frameworks were used to structure the content such that it could be easily translated into the three regional languages using translation software. The ability to achieve such a transformation of the content at least cost and minimum human interface was the competitive advantage of the firm. In fact Sanket and his team developed the entire sets of templates, frameworks and software interfaces much before Pranav joined the venture. After joining, Pranav had got some modifications made in the templates. Sanket had objected to it, but Pranav intervened explaining that the content-side view must be given due consideration.
Myworld had recently recorded 2 million page views every day. One could log on to the site and surf in English, Hindi, Gujarati or Tamil language. Traffic included a number of hits from the NRIs, especially the Gujarati community settled down in US. Myworld facilitated downloading keyboard conversion software. This software enabled the normal keyboard to be used to key in Devanagri, Gujarati or Tamil script. One could then browse, chat and send e-mails in either of the languages. Customers were charged for the software. Besides the site provided a value added service. It enabled the user to fill in details to any other site using any of the four languages.
Myworld started its operations when venture capital funding was very easy. The venture started with the help of an angel investor who held 70% stake in the firm. While Jay held 20%, Sanket held 2% of the equity and the rest was shared between their families. Myworld had not come out with IPO. Sentiments in the stock market were not too conducive to go public. The venture was launched amidst an extensive media campaign. In its inception days one could find Myworld advertisements on hoardings, in newspapers, on radio and television. Revenues came in from selling the conversion-software and through banner advertisements. However eighteen months down the line the number of new customers registering with the site reached to a plateau and cash was just not flowing in. The massive media launch had rendered the cash-coffers dry. Jay estimated that he had money left for just another four months. He also knew that his portal was only as good as any other horizontal portal providing an array of information on diverse topics. The only distinguishing factor was that it was available in local languages and that this was its key strength. Myworld had not changed much from where it had started.
The pressure was increasing from his key resource departments. Sanket had sent a requisition for purchasing business intelligence software. "We need a quick, responsive system that will capture how the customer spends time on the site, which areas interest them and what are the points at which they log out. This will help us in understanding customers requirements better. Besides we have already overloaded our servers. We must quickly think about investing in some more hardware or if that looks to be costly get some server farm to work for us," he had pointed out.
"Guys we have had enough of plain dal-roti for the customer," said Pranav in the last general meeting. "The customer must now get butter-chicken. Enough of that plain old stuff like news, astrology and sports. We must think of some interactive activity that will make the customer cling on longer."
Late that evening Sanket poured out his heart over a drink, "You know Jay, we have built this firm. You remember how we have struggled door to door, our egos battered and smashed to pieces, to get this venture working. We still do not hesitate to travel in autos and stay in rented flats. Then this chap, Pranav, walks in midway. He moves around in Astra and stays in Company apartment. How far do you think that is fair."
Jay knew that something was amiss. The customers were not coming. Cash flow graphs were due south. There were disagreements in the firm. He knew that he could not do without his content guys neither could he antagonize Sanket. A general meeting is scheduled next morning. What must Jay say?
dudes and duddettes please suggest the remedy
