ANSWERS TO FAQs ABOUT LPT
1. Last year, those who studied the regional/official language till 10th standard in school were exempted from LPT.
2. Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking the regional/official language are all tested. In general, a standard 10th level proficiency in the local language is required to qualify in LPT.
3. For the regions having more than one official language as mentioned in Annex IV, proficiency in any one will suffice.
4. The pattern of the LPT varied from one region to another last year. While in some regions it comprised of a passage in the local language followed by 05 descriptive questions with a composite time limit of 30 minutes, in other regions it included a test of dictation and newspaper reading in addition to a passage-based test. Further, in some (or probably all) regions the test was conducted and evaluated by State Board authorities/State Public Service Commissions.
5. The exam was qualifying in nature. The marks awarded (if any) were not disclosed last year. Only those who qualify/are exempted from LPT and who clear biometric verification are eligible for final selection (which will be in the order of merit in Mains).
6. Different regional offices may conduct the LPT on different dates as per their discretion. No grace period is provided to learn the language or to appear for the test on a later date.
7. A difficulty faced by many candidates is that they are unaccustomed to reading/writing in the local language. Last year, few people whose mother tongue was the local language failed to qualify as they took LPT lightly despite being out of touch with the language. Therefore, if you happen to clear Mains, I recommend practising for LPT, especially if you cannot remember the last time when you wrote a few paragraphs in the regional language.
NOTE: This year, the process may change in some particulars. For example, everyone who clears Mains may have to appear for the LPT, as implied in the notification.
