GOODS AND SERVICES TAX (GST)
- Proposal = merging many indirect taxes
- comprehensive tax levy on manufacture, sale and consumption of goods and services at a national level
- collected at VAT method
- Uniformity of rates = Single VAT
- Centre: CENVAT + Service Tax + Sales Tax + Stamp Duty +Custom Duty
- State: State excise + sales tax + entry, lease, work contracts, luxury, octroi, turnover, cess, lottery taxes, electricity duty, state surcharges, entertainment tax
- Single rate of 20% = Centre (12) + State (8)
- end consumer bears this tax as he is the last person in the supply chain
- Experts say that GST is likely to improve tax collections and boost India's economic development by breaking tax barriers between States and integrating India through a uniform tax rate.
- transparent and corruption-free tax administration
- both Central and State taxes will be collected at the point of sale, will be charged on the manufacturing cost
- India will gain $15 billion a year by implementing the GST.
- Under dual GST, a Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) and a State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) will be levied on the taxable value of a transaction.
- France was the first country to introduce GST system in 1954.
- Alcohol, tobacco, petroleum products are likely to be out of the GST regime.

o States are collecting tax at 5 rates (0, 1, 4, 20, 12.5 = revenue neutral rate), challenge is to convince to state at 8%

The symbol for square root, the one which resembles a tick; does it usually refer to only the positive square root or both ? I seem to recall that the exponent (1/2) refers to both the +ve and the -ve square root, while the tick sign refers to only the +ve one.
