In merger two entities which are separately working are combined to form one entity with single ownership. In this process one entity loses its identity and merged with the other. In banking parlance merger is consolidation of two banking companies in one. Merger is not new in banking industry of India.After independence many banks merged. Recent example of merger is merger of state bank subsidiaries and Bhartiya Mahila Bank in State Bank of India. Merger of Banks can be done in two ways, First one is voluntary and the second one is forced merger. In forced merger banks are forced by the regulator to go for merger. In case of India, Reserve Bank has power to direct banks to merge. There are several advantage of merger of banks. Merger increases the customer base for the banks as well as diversification of products. Merged entity is capable to deliver various new product to their customer. It increases their profits. In Indian Banking parlance generally a weak bank is merged with the strong bank. This acts as the bailout for the weak banks, and the strong banks suffers several issues like profit decreases after merger, staff resistance in merger. Sometimes bank have to cut their work force and redeployment of employees. In a nutshell we can say that merger has both pros and cons. To reap the maximum benefit of merger, it should be synergy driven and the issues related with merger should be addressed suitably.
