ESI - 83 Eng - 60 F&M - 58 Interview - 34

There's some subjectivity in marking descriptive papers and there is no way it can be ruled out. It can be toned down by increasing the number of questions. Descriptive English has flushed my chances before when I scored 40/40 in SIDBI but meager 20/50 in descriptive. So there's definitely a mismatch between what I deliver and what the examiners expect. Maybe next time I'll close the gap.

You all are warriors.. some won the war and some lost a battle. 😃

English made up for the somewhat low score in ESI.

To those who are asking about English prep, I'd say two things: - Practice at least 5 precis and 1 essay before the exam, and NEVER exceed the word limit by more than 2-3 words.

Most of us take English lightly and look for improvisation at the time of the exam. This can be fatal as we are out of touch with English-writing and end up writing haphazardly.

While a good essay can help, a good precis can be the real differentiator. The precis should be a summary in YOUR OWN WORDS. It should convey the theme or main idea/points of the passage, while not necessarily using its language. The quoted speech must be avoided - it is not important to write 'who' said 'what', but what overall idea is conveyed by that speech.

For eg, in this year's precis question, there was a paragraph -

The department is spearheading the Start-Up India initiative announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day address. Sitharaman said DIPP would work with banks across the country, espcially in rural areas. "If each of these (bank) branches gives tribal or Dalit population something to start up with, it would take the whole startup and innovate India (initiative) thought to district level," she said.

Here, one doesn't have to write about what Sitharaman is saying but the overall idea of providing credit to startups by weaker sections. Hence the precis should go like this -

DIPP will work with the banks to make startup-credit available to weaker sections and take the startup and innovation culture to district level.

Further, facts /figures/data should be avoided. For eg, if data for India's exports of last five years has been in passage, you must exclude this data and may just mention the "trend" i.e., upward, stagnant etc. However, this should be in line with the overall theme of the passage, and one may have to quote some figure/data in precis if it is integral to the theme of the passage.

Lastly, the title should be concise and all-encompassing. I gave the title - "India's push for startup culture".

Again, one must practice writing precis of different kinds of passages before the exam. It can make or break your final result.

Disclaimer- I am not an "expert" in English and above points are as per my observations and experience. So, please correct me if I am wrong.

Wrote an essay (Does India need Capital Investment? )of around 500 words (breached the limit by ~100 words) and Precis of 118 words (+ 8 words). I believe,I wrote a fine piece discussing various dimensions {physical capital(infrastructure),human capital(education, health),social capital(SHGs,Co-operatives)} corroborating arguments with numerous facts.

However,couldn't tame the RBI bull.

Lessons learnt: Respect the word limit,as far as possible
