Goods and services tax launched in India on 1St July 2017. The country’s biggest economic reform for One tax, One market, One nation. Currently 160 countries across the world have implemented GST system. In GST regime, consumers get the benefit due to removal of cascading of taxes and efficiency gains. Indian government is dedicated to improve the IT enabled framework which supports tax filing. It also seeks to reduce direct interface with tax authorities. GST will benefit and empower citizens by reducing overall tax burden. Being a consumption based tax, GST will be paid to state where goods and services are consumed. GSTN, a non-profit organization has been formed to create an integrated platform for all stakeholders. GST is governed by GST council under the chairmanship of current Union finance minister Mr. Arun Jaitley. Council is entrusted with the task of balancing the three objectives: 1) Ensuring the interests for poor and vulnerable remain protected by keeping the goods of mass consumption at affordable prices. 2) Tax revenue of centre and states is protected 3) Tax on commodities does not increase or decrease substantially. Keeping the above objectives in mind, GST is being touted as one of the biggest tax reforms of independent India. It is the 2nd major surgical strike on tax evaders, brings most of them under tax net, makes movement of commodities freer in the country, and attracts foreign investment with a unified market with a single tax. It may improve country’s rank in “Ease of doing business” in long run. GST can be seen as a business change, a social revolution that will reenergize the sagging wheels of our economic growth. Though the prices might inflate on short term or remain unpredictable but long term benefits may compensate for the effects.
