STUDY SMART

This is a handout cum ebook authored by me. It explains how a student can excel in studies, school/college exams or competitive exams by studying smart. This book includes some smart study techniques which will make studying easier and more enjoyable.
ISBN No 978-93-5361-168-2 (isbn.gov.in)
✓ INTRODUCTION
The future of any nation depends on how strong and capable its YOUNG generation is. Therefore, we must ensure that the future of our YOUNG generation is bright. EDUCATION & CAREER is what matters the most to them. We all know how important it is to STUDY! Our teachers, our parents, educational institutions, coaching institutions etc. keep on advising the students/children to work hard, study hard and focus more and more on studies etc. but never do they tell us how? How to study and How to focus? Like in any sport, there is a TECHNIQUE to play or hit a shot and when you follow that technique, you are likely to succeed. Same way, there has to be some technique, some tips and tricks to study as well, which will make studying easier and enjoyable.
✓ HARD WORK VS SMART WORK
So, here we need to understand the concept of SMART STUDY. Abraham Lincoln, the former US president, once quoted, “Give me eight hours to chop down a tree and I will spend the first six sharpening the axe” So, this is what SMART WORK is all about. In this case, a person following a hard work approach will straight away start cutting the trees and he would fail. The smart approach behind this task would be to make the axe more and more sharp so that cutting the trees will become much easier and he will be able to cut the trees within two hours only. In case, the axe isn’t sharper, that person won’t be able to finish the task even in 8 hours.
Now that we have realized the difference between hard work and smart work, let’s have a look at five main components of SMART STUDY!
PLAN & ORGANIZE – As Benjamin Franklin (the founding father of US) quoted “If you fail to plan, then you are planning to fail” Yes, planning is that important. Without a study plan, we are bound to fail. Because when we do not have any target, how will we hit it? We are certainly going to miss the target. In the same way, we cannot succeed in exams if we do not have any plan or strategy for exams. Though we know how important it is to study, we do not really know how important it is to plan! We haven’t yet realized the importance of planning and organizing. The best part about planning is that HALF of our work is already done (in form of a blueprint), which gives us mental peace, which ultimately gives us confidence and serves as a stress buster. So, make a plan with regard to:
- WHY TO STUDY?
- WHERE TO STUDY?
- WHEN TO STUDY?
- WHAT TO STUDY?
- HOW TO STUDY?
- WHY TO STUDY?
Here, we need to work on two important things. The first one is that before studying we must be clear about our mission and vision i.e. INSPIRATION to study. Introspect and ask yourself, “Why am I studying?” Once you have found out what inspires you to study then the second thing is that you must keep yourself MOTIVATED so that you can focus on your studies for a long period of time.
a. INSPIRATION- “Do something, not because someone else is doing. Not because someone else is asking you to do. Not because you want success. Not because you want money. Not because you want fame. Not because you want this or that BUT because you LOVE doing that. Either do what you love or love what you do because when you put love into work, it becomes a masterpiece”. So, the first thing is to find out what inspires you to study? Unless you have found out the INSPIRATION to study, do not study because it won’t bear fruits at all. We all have some dreams, whether you want to become a scientist, doctor, singer, sportsperson or anything but we do have some goals or dreams and we must find out that. Because if you do not know that, your life will be like a journey without a destination. You know that you have to travel but you do not know where to travel and so you end up getting nowhere. As one of the quotes of Bill Copeland goes like, “The trouble with NOT HAVING A GOAL is that you spend your life running up and down the field and NEVER SCORE.” Therefore, the best choice is to find out your vision first and then start working towards it.
b. MOTIVATION – “Push yourself because no one else is going to do it for you.” There is another saying which goes like, “The secret to going ahead is getting started” meaning that once you begin, rest of the journey will be a cake walk for us because the BEGINNING is always the hardest.
Another thing we must understand that INSPIRATION is the real thing because it is an inside force whereas MOTIVATION is an outside (external) force. That is why we call Motivation as a temporary aid. So in my opinion, your real MOTIVATION has to be your INSPIRATION. In short, MOTIVATION = Others inspire you. INSPIRATION = You inspire yourself. Hence, motivation is short lived and inspiration is a life long process.
- WHERE TO STUDY?
Studying for exams requires hard work and dedication. It can become very easy to get distracted while studying, between the longing for a snack break or the urge to check a phone notification, but establishing a dedicated study area at home should help with keeping focused. A designated study space free of any distractions is likely to sharpen the mind and improve concentration. Before you even start studying, you must have a dedicated study space. It should not be like, one day you study here and the next day, you study at some other place. There has to be a fixed study area where you can study fully focused. Now, imagine how comfortable do you feel
staying at your friends’ or relatives’ house as compared to your own? Certainly, we do not feel comfortable because our mind needs some time to get accustomed to the new place. Same is the case here. When we do not have a dedicated study space then one day we study here and some day there. So, every time you change your study area, your mind takes time to get accustomed to the new area and therefore, we cannot start focusing on our studies the moment we start studying. Now, the question arises how a designated study space should look like or how can we decide upon it? While looking for a dedicated study space, we must ensure that we do have a desk and a chair. Make sure that you put your desk and chair in that area where there is proper ventilation so as to get fresh air and sunlight. Make sure that your study space isn’t near bed, dining table or television because environment does affect us. Dining table or Bed Room or Living Area having television isn’t meant for studying. There will be lots of distractions.
- WHEN TO STUDY?
Some are early risers and some are night owlers. Some of us prefer to study during day time while some prefer to study during night time. But we must understand what time is actually the best for us? What time will fetch us more productive study hours? Although, there are several medical reasons that make studying in the early hours better than studying at late hours, the choice also depends on the individual’s preference and habits. For e.g. most students prefer late night studies, because waking up early is pretty much of a tough job for them, while others who are early risers do prefer morning hours to study.
Researches on the best time to study suggest that students who study early in the morning remember the things for a long time and also learn it in a quick time. Some might not agree to that. However, the reason is quite simple, early in the morning your body is fully relaxed and you are totally fresh. All the tensions in your mind were overrun by a good sleep and now your mind is totally free from all worries. Fresh air of the morning makes you feel comfortable and you feel extra power in your body. Since, sleep rejuvenates your mind and body in a mystical manner, in the morning hours you tend to use the full capacity of your brain and body.
Our brain is most active while sleeping but we cannot study while sleeping! Jokes apart! Sleeping aside, our brain is more active during early morning just after we wake up and this is the time that will fetch us productive study hours. As the day is passed, our productivity declines. Our mind’s ability to absorb things reduces and hence, even if we think there is lesser distractions during night time, our absorption capability is bare minimum. Due to this, studying in the night takes more time to learn that particular topic. At night students get proper concentration but still they take more time. This is because, all the things that you have done during the day keeps roaming in your mind continuously and distracting you from studies at night, and your brain doesn’t get much room to process it as well. Late night study can also affect your daily routine.
A study conducted in 2008 by Texas University concluded that those students identifying themselves as early birds earned a full point higher on their GPAs than
those who identified themselves as night owls. This further proves that studying in the wee hours is scientifically better than studying in the late night. Yet another study claimed that morning people are actually happier than night owls. One of the online reports also reported that early birds are more likely to exhibit traits like optimism, satisfaction and conscientiousness as opposed to the night owls. Moreover, research further indicates that people who stay up late are at higher risk for depression. Additionally, other studies on the same subject reveals that night owls are more prone to significant tobacco and alcohol use.
- WHAT TO STUDY?
Most of the students fail, not because of lack of study but because of over studying. They fail because they focus on amount of time spent on studying, putting quantity over quality, not realizing that 2 hours of consistent, planned study schedule will fetch them more marks than 6 hours of unorganized, inconsistent study schedule. So, we must focus on what to study and how much to study?
a. PARETO’S 80/20 PRINCIPLE
(How to spend less time studying but be more productive)
As Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, once quoted, “I will always choose a lazy person to do a difficult job because he will find an easy way to do it”
We all know how it feels to be inefficient: spending many hours “studying” without getting much productive work done can be incredibly frustrating, and is a drain on time and energy for students everywhere.
What if you could spend LESS time studying, but still get MORE done in your day? If this sounds too good to be true, then prepare to be pleasantly surprised. The secret to maximizing productivity is The Pareto Principle, otherwise known as The 80:20 Rule. Pareto was an Italian economist in the early 1900s, and he declared that in many aspects of life, 80% of effects come from 20% of causes. In other words, 80% of your exam success will come from 20% of the work or efforts you put in.
Here, let us try to understand how a student can execute this principle in real life. Many students, after they finish their graduation, appear for bank exams (conducted by IBPS). Nearly, 15 lakh candidates apply for a single bank exam conducted every year from which only 7000-8000 candidates make it to the final list. So obviously, competition is very tough but a smart candidate knows how to excel here by implementing Pareto’s 80/20 rule here. More than 80 % of candidates waste their most of preparation time in understanding, learning and then practicing all the topics and they try to cover all the syllabus of each and every section. Now, what a smart candidate would do is that he will go through the syllabus and previous paper pattern and will try to understand the weightage of each topic of a section, say for example, Maths section.
Ideally, there are 14-15 chapters in this section. But while he tried to understand the actual paper pattern, he realized that by learning and practicing only 20-25 % of the syllabus which carries 75-80% of the weightage, he will surely be able to qualify the section with good marks and the 70-75 % of the time he saved by not looking at the rest of the syllabus, he can dedicate that much time to excel in some other section. This is not something I am saying on the basis of theory but the same thing I did apply myself while I was preparing for bank exams and I have cleared 3 bank exams same way.
The main goal of using the 80/20 principle during schooling and college days is to study more efficiently. Whether the principle is used to determine and eliminate distractions or to find trouble areas that need focus, it can be a powerful tool that can improve grades, help with time management, and improve the college experience overall. Today’s students, burdened with debt and too many distractions, need every single bit of help they can get.
b. SOURCES, STUDY MATERIALS ETC.
Whenever we think about studying, we give more importance to materials and reference books than study itself. We should make sure that we do not end up buying too many books or study materials for reference. Lesser the books, lesser the stress because when we see too many books in front of us, we naturally get tensed by having a look at it. We would be like, “Ohh there are so many pages,
so many chapters and I haven’t yet finished even 10 pages etc.” and all such thoughts will distract us. Another thing is that we have a lot of sources from where we can prepare i.e text books, reference books, notes, other study materials, internet etc. However, we must decide one or two good sources from where we can prepare because if we do not decide the source we will always be in dilemma as to whether to prepare from here or there or we may end up wasting our lot of time in just referring to dozens of books and websites and yet not getting anything at all.
- HOW TO STUDY?
Now that we are clear with Why, Where, When and What to Study, it’s time to get a brief idea about how to study. Knowing how to study is all about SMART STUDY. It is about knowing your strengths and weaknesses, your learning style, your focusing capabilities, your productive hours etc and studying accordingly.
a. POMODORO TECHNIQUE
The Pomodoro Technique is a time management philosophy that aims to provide the user with maximum focus and creative freshness, thereby allowing them to complete projects faster with less mental fatigue. The process is simple:
- For every project throughout the day, you budget your time into short increments and take breaks periodically. - You work for 25 minutes, then take break for five minutes. - Each 25-minute work period is called a “pomodoro”, named after the Italian word for tomato. Francesco Cirillo (developer of technique) used a kitchen timer shaped like a tomato as his personal timer, and thus the method’s name. - After four “pomodoros” have passed, (100 minutes of work time with 15 minutes of break time) you then take a 15-20 minute break. POMODORO technique is explained in simple words as above. However, keep in mind that we can always extend our pomodoro (work period) upto 50 minutes depending upon our practice and focusing capabilities. Initially, it is advisable to keep it under 30 minutes and later on as you progress and have practiced enough, you will realise that you can extend your pomodoro to may be 40 minutes or 50 minutes. So, when your pomodoro is increased to 50 minutes then you should also extend your break time to 10 minutes, instead of 5 minutes. Now, the question might be what to do in those 5 or 10 minutes? That you have to decide. Do whatever makes you relax, rejuvenate and feel much
better. You may just go for a walk, have a glass of water, take a short nap, close your eyes and breathe deeply or it may be anything else.
b. Study less with your EYES looking down (EYE CONTACT)
How many of us do feel sleepy while studying? Almost all of us!! And it is natural. Why? Because we usually read and re read our texts or reference books while looking down and when we look down, our eyes gets little strained and as a result we feel sleepy. So, the question might be, how to study then?
It is advisable to bring the book up to meet the level of your eyes, which will help in keeping your back straight. Your eyes must look straight into the book while reading. Another option would be using a laptop or PC because it is always in front of us and we always look at it straight and not down. Studying looking down is only advisable while writing notes or while doing mathematics, reasoning, accounting, statistics or other practical subjects.
c. KNOW & DESIGN YOUR LEARNING STYLE
Students learn 10% of what they read, 20% of what they hear: 30% of what they see, 50% of what they see and hear: 70% of what they discuss with others, 80% of what they experience personally and 95% of what they teach to someone else. First, get to know about your learning style. There
must be a proper study pattern and study method for different types of learning i.e Rote Learning (for memorizing facts & figures), Conceptual Learning, Verbal Ability, Practising Math/Science/Accounting/Statistics/Reasoning problems.
Let’s take example of three different formats of cricket: Test, One Days & T-20. A player needs to adjust to a different format of the game to become successful in all formats. You cannot take the same game plan, technique in all formats of the game. In order to succeed, you must adapt well according to the situation and demand of the game. When you are playing Test Cricket, you need to be focused enough to stick to your basics. You do not need to invent or try new shots; you just need to play conventional cricketing shots because that will minimize the risks of getting out. When you are playing One dayers, you need to strategize your game plan for 50 overs. You need to set targets, set roles for different players and execute your plan on the field. When you are playing T-20 format, then you need to take more calculative risks, try more un conventional shots and at the same time, score runs since you have fewer balls.
Same way, you must adapt to different modes of learning while approaching different subjects and different topics. Design your learning style and pattern and stick to it.
d. READING IS NOT STUDYING
Do not re read the text, it shows no improvement. Rather make your own summary notes using internet sources. Learn about the concept using audio visual tools. Use flow charts to memorize stories, in visual form. You may take audio tapes of classes or record yourself etc or try relating the information you already know with something new having some flow.
Let me give you an example. While I was preparing for bank exams, my biggest scare was GENERAL AWARENESS because this section is so broad and you cannot predict anything. So, preparing for this section for the biggest challenge for me. Initially, I used to read, read and read. Merely reading the stuff didn’t help. In fact, it was more like waste of time. It didn’t bear fruits at all. My morale was getting down but I had to do something. Then I thought may be I need to change the way I am studying, the way I am preparing for this section. The first thing I did is that I stopped referring/reading different books, websites etc. and while analyzing my learning style, I found that my study would be more effective and productive if I follow a Youtube Channel named Study IQ Education.
The biggest advantage for me was that this general awareness section was not a broader section then as such I had one and only one source and that too was a genuine, quality driven source which you can rely upon. I used
to watch one video (weekly current affairs- usually 50 mins longer) and that was more than enough. While watching the video, I used to watch as well as listen to one question and then pause for a minute. I would read again and write the same question while making notes. Since, it was a three way learning i.e visual, audio as well as making own notes, it was very effective, easy and free from stress. Studying was more of a fun. So, yes always make your own notes and always refer them each time you revise.
e. KNOW YOUR PRODUCTIVE HOURS
One of the researchers suggested that a person needs to evaluate their entire “ecosystem” in trying to understand their productive rhythms and peak performance times. In order to maintain the productivity of what we study, we need breaks at regular intervals as we discussed in POMODORO technique. But here we need to identify the most productive hours amongst 24 hours and then studying during that time only so as to get the most out of it.
Start tracking your routine and find out your peak hours when you are fully or most focused. It may be like 6 to 9 in the morning, 11 to 1 pm in the noon, 4 to 7 in the evening. Once you have identified your peak hours, make sure you do not waste those precious time and make the most out of it. Also, avoid studying during non-peak hours or unproductive hours
because that would be of no use. Instead you may utilize those time in doing some other routine work or creative activities or spend some time for personal hobbies etc.
Besides working on above five components of SMART STUDY i.e. Why to study, Where to study, When to study, What to study and How to study, we must work on points mentioned below, which will eventually make studying easier, more focused and more productive.
➢ Be process oriented and not result oriented
➢ Understanding the importance of sleep and power nap
➢ Work on your habits (study habits, food habits, sleeping)
➢ Remove distractions (social media, smartphone etc.)
➢ Focus more on what NOT to do, instead of what TO do
➢ Prioritize your work
➢ Understanding the Importance of Sun Bath
➢ Work on mental fitness
➢ Understanding the Importance of consistency and revision
➢ Understanding the Importance of stretching and blinking while studying
