CLEAN INDIA

Cleanliness is next to godliness is a famous proverb and the best application of this is Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is a national level campaign also known as Clean India Mission or Clean India Drive, initiated by our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 145th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, on 2nd October,2014 at Raj Ghat, New Delhi.

It aims to make all backward statutory towns clean by construction of latrines, promoting sanitation programmes in rural areas, cleaning streets, roads and providing better infrastructure. The first drive was on 25th September, 2014 and approximately 3 million government employees and students of various schools and colleges participated in this drive. The Prime Minister nominated 9 personalities to initiate it.

This campaign was appreciated by everyone around the world whether belonging to India or not. It was also a very talked about event on the social media like Facebook, Twitter etc. People from every age group became a part of this campaign with a hope to change the condition of our country at present.

This initiative will prove to be very effective for even the growth of country in different ways. After the full achievement of the set plan to make our country clean by 2019, the prospects of investment in our country will surely improve. It has the capability to draw attention of investors and this in turn will boost the GDP.

It is said to be 'beyond politics' and 'inspired by patriotism'. Modi also said that each person should devote at least 100 hours per year to do their part in this campaign. It is definitely a positive initiative and after its achievement we would be able to live the much awaited dream of Clean India.

Para completion is one of the prominent topics in the English Language section of several bank PO examinations. Short paragraphs with a missing sentence is given and the candidates have to choose an appropriate sentence from the given choices to complete the paragraph. The missing sentence can be the introduction, end or sentence from the middle.

The prospect of recognising the author's line of thought to pick the right sentence may be daunting. However, with the right approach and a few tricks in your arsenal, you an easily crack these questions.

Tips for para completion:

1. Gauge the paragraph's subject/theme: Read the paragraph once to know what the author is talking about. This will make it easier for you to identify the direction of the author's views, the nature of points discussed further and thus the right answer.

2. Author's tone:  The correct choice for the missing sentence would be extension of the original paragraph and thus will have references to the author's style. This includes the general tone of the passage. It tells us whether the author's opinion about something is critical, complimentary or simply factual. Keeping note of the adjectives used is helpful to understand the tone.

3. Continuity: Flow of thought has to be maintained in the para and thus the answer option Sentences in the paragraph have a logical flow and the answer option should thus take this flow forward. Sentences immediately before or after the blank helps you glean what point should follow or precede.

4. Introductory sentence: If you have to fill in the opening sentence, look for choices that clearly introduce the concept/issue, person or location.

5. Middle sentence: Sentence in the middle of the paragraph will generally be explanatory in nature. Such sentences will contain examples, comments, comparison, etc.

6. Closing sentence: This sentence sums up the subject discussed in the paragraph.

What to eliminate?

Elimination is the best tool when it comes to tackling questions in the English Language section. For para completion, eliminate answer choices that are:

1. Breaking the flow: An option that breaks the flow of the para is either a repetition of a previous point or an irrelevant idea altogether.

2. Beyond the general theme: A choice that veers from the main subject/theme of the passage. If the passage talks only about advancements in biotechnology, specific reference to a particular branch of biotechnology, say medical or marine, would be unrelated.

3. Lengthy: Sentences that are unusually drawn-out are deliberately given to confuse you.

4. Not matching with the tone: If the passage has a positive take on an issue/idea then the answer choice cannot be negative connotation.

Consider the following example:

Iran President Hassan Rouhani's government is taking measures to abolish visa requirements for foreign visitors and build as many as 200 new hotels. The country's vice-president for tourism, Masoud Soltanifar, said that "bright days" lie ahead. This upbeat mood is the result of Iran's historic nuclear deal that may lead to a significant rise in the number of tourists visiting the country. _______________ ___________________________. The UAE-based Rotana hotels is planning to open a number of hotels in Iran. France's leading hotelier, Accor, is involved in at least two four-star hotels in the country.

a) Iran's unique cultural treasures have thus far remained largely unseen by western eyes.

b) After a long time, the nation is set to witness a staggering rise in number of tourists visiting, thanks to the landmark nuclear deal.

c) Experts project that in a few years' time Iran's economy may swing upwards.

d) Iranian officials have expressed hope that the country could attract as many as 20 million tourists a year by 2025.

Solution:

The missing sentence is in the middle of the paragraph.
Choice (a) is incorrect as the statement does not keep up with the flow of the paragraph though it is related to tourism. Neither does it logically follows the previous sentence nor is it related to the next sentence.

Choice (b) is incorrect as it is very obviously a lengthy reproduction of the sentence preceding the blank.

Choice (c) is incorrect as it is beyond the general theme. Iran's economic growth is not in discussion here.

Choice (d) is correct as it matches with the flow- after a statement about rise in number of tourists, it is logical to mention the number of tourists likely to visit the country. It also keeps up with the tone and general subject of the passage.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan  : Dream or Reality ?

Just remember a Hollywood movie be it Slum Dog Millionaire, Eat Pray Love, Exotic Marigold Hotel or any other . All these movies are made on different stories but one thing is common, in the frame of these movies "dirty , dusty and sometimes filthy surroundings".  Beside Taj Mahal India is also a nation of cow sitting in the middle of road. Still we were ignorant or in reality choose to ignore of all these facts till recently.

But the time changed after 2nd Oct 2014 which marked birthday of our Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi. On this auspicious day Prime Minister launched an ambitious mission of Clean India or as we say " Swachh Bharat Mission".This campaign was a instant hit from the very day it started. Famous politicians, actors , beaurocrats, institutions, all of them were seen with broom cleaning roads , offices, homes, parks and every thing which they thought was worth cleaning. But after 10 months of all these great efforts can we say we are cleaner than last year?

Lets first understand what this mission is all about. Swachh Bharat Abhiyan is an old wine in new and of course attractive bottle. It started as Total Sanitation campaign in 1999 and then name was changed to Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan. But all those previous missions were government program, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan became a public awkening and public oriented program. In this campaign mission is of Clean India by 2nd October 2019 which 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Cost of this mission is burdened by both center and state in 75:25 ratio (in north east its 90:10). Various eminent personalities has been nominated as Brand ambassador for this program, which includes Anil Ambani, Baba Ramdev , Salman Khan,  Kiran Bedi, Saurav Ganguli , Amitabh Bachhan and many more. This campaign is expected to cost around  rupees 62000 crore.

This kind of massive campaign is one of its kind in whole world but yet unable to show the proportionate effect on ground. This campaign has brought awareness in common people but it's not enough. First problem lies with government body itself. Local Authorities are unable to collect waste on daily basis; they either lack man power, machinery or will power.  Even if they collect, there is a far bigger responsibility to dispose these wastes as dry and wet waste or degradable and non degradable waste. Unfortunately Human Scavenging is still practiced in few parts of our countries.

Second problem lies in the heart of nation, this is our sanitation habits. Swachh Bharat campaign has also laid emphasis on this, as most of the deadly disease spread is due to the unclean habits. Urban and rural women has to be made aware about their sanitation health in a more rigorous  and dedicated campaign. Our society has to shed away some myths and old rituals for the clean India.

Best part is we are already on it. Toilet for every schools and home is one of the succeeding cleanliness campaigns of Government. Although not complete but still has a strong ray of hope for Clean India. And as for Swachh Bharat Abhiyan   we can say "the woods are lovely dark & deep ,but I have promises to keep , and miles to go before I sleep".
