India had established itself as IT power more than a decade ago. But that was only business side of our achievement with little to effect common people outside IT industry.
Digital India is a new initiative launched by Government of India to fill this void.This programme has three basic aims, first is making digital infrastructure as basic amenity for every Indian, second is to provide e governance solution instant digital services from government and lastly digital empowerments of citizen. This project will be under direct supervision of Prime Minister and will be the responsibility of Ministry of communication and IT. But this type of infrastructural change is not just one department responsibility. Hence Digital Advisory group is formed comprising of all departments of government. Private sector will also be contributing in making India a digitalized place.This project has a time target of 2019.
Work has already begun. United telecom Industry has been given a target to connect 2500000 villages with broadband. "Meghraj" the flagship project of digital India has already been launched. It gives a personal cloud space for storage of important documents in digitalized form to create paperless and effortless governance. Various government departments have already started effective digital work stations which are helpful in creating a transparency in working of ministries.
But road to Digital India is bumpy. India is a huge nation with different geographical and social background. Providing digital infrastructure to every nook and corner is going to a Hercules effort from the government as well as private players. Also we need to have some thought on existing cyber laws and civil intimacy rights. With all the document on internet it becomes more sensitive toward theft of personal information. We have already seen incidence of such theft in US about the social security numbers. Our laws are far more ignorant towards cyber crime than US.
Concept of e governance is not new and has been around the corner for long time, but yet has not been implemented at every level. Panchayat and rural governing bodies still are far behind this concept. But the biggest problem is Digital literacy. People who cannot even write their name how we can expect them to be fluent with digital gazettes. We have not yet been able to give every citizen identity of its existence, and still dream of giving them digital space for their document.
Digital world to every Indian seems to be like one tough task. But then it was also said about mobile phones to everyone, now we have almost achieved it. Digital India is a collective effort of government and every citizen. Lets try to educate every possible Indian about the use and benfits of this initiative and add them in big, advanced and electronic India.
