Aadhar Card: What do you think of the expansion of the scope of Aadhar Card
Aadhar Card is a product of Union Identification Authority of India. It contains a 16 digit unique number, along with the address and bio-metric details of the card holder. Currently, the government is linking Aadhar Card to its numerous welfare schemes, while also making the card mandatory for a host of other activities. Its current scope ranges from availing LPG and kerosene subsidy to filing of income tax returns. The government has also linked it to the Mid-Day Meal Scheme and application for government jobs, etc.
The introduction of Aadhar Card is a revolutionary measure by the central government. It is expected to check leakages in the delivery of welfare schemes and ensure that it reaches the intended individuals. In the process, the black marketing of these essential commodities will also be contained. Besides, with interlinking of Aadhar and other identification documents, the administrative and healthcare delivery can be simplified to a great extent.
However, it has raised questions related to potential breach of piracy, as no clear assurance has been given by the government relating to the protection of information and bio-metric data collected by it. Besides, some proponents of freedom of choice have also opposed the Aadhar Card being made mandatory and have raised objections on the ever-expanding scope of it.
The government needs to take care of these concerns. Stringent measures should be taken to ensure that the data collected by the authorities is protected and is not misused. However, in light of the various potential visible benefits of Aadhar Card, restricting its scope would be detrimental to the citizens of this country.Â
