Hello everyone!

This post is regarding the Group Exercise and Personal Interview of SBI PO. I've had two experiences in SBI PO GDPI, once in 2015 and the other in 2016. In the very beginning I'd say that, luck plays a big factor in GDPI, and not just your knowledge.

In this post, I'll just discuss the process of GDPI and the Do's & Don'ts. I'll write up another post for FAQs about Documents, Dress code and the Bio-Data Form.

I'll first discuss GD, or as this time it is being called Group Exercise.

1. Group Exercise-

I think each one of us is aware of Group Discussion (GD). Last year too, we had GD, however, we were given another 'task' of Group Exercise (GE). GE is essentially a GD, but as the name suggests, it is an "Exercise", and not a "Discussion". In GE, they give you a topic, say, "What qualities should are essential for someone to be good at time management?". Now, here the'll provide you with 7-8 qualities, and the'd ask you to priorities them in order from 1 to 8, with some valid reasons. Qualities can be - knowing time wasting activities, knowing urgent and important activities etc.

As of last year, there would be two members in the panel, and 10 candidates. But since, they've called in 6300+ candidates, they can take upto even 14-16 candidates in one panel.

Now, as of the order of speaking is concerned, it depends from panel to panel. Some go with giving chance one by one to each candidate, and after everyone has spoken for the stipulated time, the discussion is open for everyone. Whereas, some go with idea of opening the discussion to everyone from the beginning, which in my opinion is the ideal form of discussion.

GE is a fun part, in fact, the complete process of GEPI is fun. And, I'd suggest you not to worry a lot about this. Do not prepare from plethora of topics, because trust me, the topics which you discuss will never come. Also, since this year its GE, and not GD, hence the preparation of these many topics should be ignored. I'd suggest you to keep it more instinctive, it brings more passion and sense, in my opinion. Also, the language - people who get their GEPI in any place where Hindi is not spoken in numbers, should forget about any language other than English. However, people getting centres like Delhi, Lucknow, patna, Bhopal, Chandigarh and even Ahmendabad can use Hindi, given that other candidates are okay with you speaking in Hindi. If anyone, I mean anyone says that Hindi is not allowed, then please unfriend him on Facebook, block him on WhatsApp, he's not your friend. It will be clearly mentioned in the Bio-Data Form that you can choose your language for GEPI between Hindi and English. So, don't have this doubt that you cannot use Hindi. One more thing, it is not the language, but your knowledge and expressions that matter. Marks have nothing to with language. I've known people scoring as high as 45 and 47 out of 50, even though they had their GDPI in Hindi. But, if you use Hindi, then just use Hindi, do not switch between the languages. Its your GDPI, and not a club.

DOs:

1. Try to be the first one to speak, but only if you're clear about the matter in question. I'm telling this because, many of the good points which you have in mind, will be spoken by someone else, if you don't start in the beginning, and then panic sets in while looking for new points. However, if you don't have much idea about the topic, just listen on for sometime to other people, then speak.

2. Look into the eyes of every candidate while speaking, you're addressing to the group, and not one individual.

3. Use non-verbal gestures, (not fingers ;) ). Hand movements suggest that you're really into the discussion. This is a very perosnal opinion, You might not find it okay.

4. If someone is trying to speak something, and he's fumbling, and someone else tries to jump in, ask that person to kindly let your fellow candidate make his points.

5. Give everyone a chance to speak, and listen properly. Sometimes, that panel members picks up one candidate, ank asks him to tell everyone what a particular candidate spoke. So, please listen everyone, diligently.

6. Be assertive, not aggressive.

7. Keep your tone firm, and not loud. Be open to other's opinions.

DON'Ts-

1. Don't be the only one to speak. Don't overspeak, don't underspeak.

2. Don't look at the assessors (panel members). They're not the ones you're doing the exercise with.

3. Don't interrupt anyone, however, wherever you find someone completing his points, and you feel the need of jumping in, go on. Make your points again, and sit back, waiting for another opportunity.

4. Do not repeat points, however, if you want to make any other point, you can take aid from someone else's point, and make your point stronger.

5. Don't be adamant of your own view, keep room for  views from others too, and accept if, if it is more rational and pragmatic than yours.

P.S. Similing is important, but farzi ka smile is more detrimental. So don't smile, unless there is anything to smile. A topic of Green House Effect is not someting to smile on. Please mind that. 😊

Personal Interview:

This is pure luck, actually. They can ask you anything, so any amount of your preparation can prove nothing, if you don't have luk on your side. I doo't think I've much to say about this part, as most of you already know what to do and what not in PI, however, I'll mention some important things in brief.

First of all prepare eveything that can be mentioned in your biodata, everything -

1. Personal Background - father, mother, siblings, birthplace, state, hobbies, etc.

2. Educational Background -mostly graduation.

3. Professional Background -Work ex.

Apart from these, there are few more things that one needs to prepare.

1. Current Affairs (1 or one and half months)

2. Banking and Economy (Basic questions, if non-commerce background)

3. Other miscellaneous General Knowledge.

You must have heard about how you can change the way your interview goes, and I used to think it as complete rubbish, until last year. You surely can take the interview the way you want. Answer the first few questions in a way that it shows that you're strong in that particular section, and things will start going in that way.

Anyway, lets comeback to the main part. There will be five menber, different from the one in GE, in your panel, and one would obviouly be a lady member. There is always a Chairman/woman of the panel, and he'd sit in the centre.

1. Knock before your enter, and ask May I come in?

2. Wish the lady member first, because, karna padta hai.

3. Then wish everyone in unison. (Good <insert the time of the day>, Sirs!)

4. Look at everyone initially, with a smile. (Chavanniya Muskaan, if you know what I mean)

5. When someone asks you a question, answer him and him only, look into his eyes, that's all. You'll find people saying that you need to look at all the member, but I differe from this opinion. Please do according your thinking.

6. Do not interrupt any member, even if he interrupts you. Listen to him, if you happen to interrupt by mistake, then apologies and let him continue.

7. If you don't know the answer, simply say "Sorry", that you don't recall or are not aware of. If you're a liitle bit confused then you can ask if you can take a guess, if they allow, then take an intelligent guess. Even if its wrong, no worries. A guess is wrong one out of two times, if you talk about probability. 😊

8. If any member tells you the correct answer then, acknowledge that and say thank you.

9. Sit straight, do not lean, and you can use hand gestures, in my opinion. Also, keep a smile throughout, while answering and while listening to their questins.

10. If they offer you a chocolate, or a toffee or a cookie, take it. I've heard that you shouldn't take it, but I find it stupid to reject. A very personal thing. Do what you think at that particular time. I really don't feel that they give/deduct marks for such a thing.

11. If they ask whether you have any questions, simply say "No sir, Thank you". Please don't ask "Mera interview kaisa hua?"

11. When the interview is over, say thank you to all, and wish them a good day ahead.

13. Close the door with your hands, gently, without making any sound, and don't keep it open or let it close by itself.

I'm mentioning the link that has the transcript of my interview that happned last year in Mumbai, please read if you wish so.

Anyone last year kya kya documents chahie tha ???

I am a 2014 batch passout. I have a 3 years gap since then. No work experience. The real reason behind that gap is I was preparing for RBI Grade B. Wasted the first year after Btech in job search. Then appeared for RBI Grade B twice but could not clear it. Meanwhile, wrote SBI too but failed eventually. Now how can I justify this gap of 3 years if asked by the interviewer? What should be my answer to them? Will this be taken negatively by the interviewers? Share your honest opinion please. 🙈 🙈
