Long but worth reading. There is a small restaurant opposite to my apartment with just four tables in it. Only four people work there, and all the four are below 25 years of age. One of the guy was from my native, and I was comfortable speaking to him in my mothertongue. I know these guys for past four months but never had a chance to talk to them about their life, because, whenever I cross the restaurant to go to gym around 5 A.M in the morning, he use to cut vegetables or he will be cooking. When I return from gym, he will be preparing tea, or serving the customers. When I return from office, he will still be busy in preparing parotta. Two weeks ago, I went to meet my friend and came back to my flat around 1 A.M. I saw him washing all those big vessels, and cleaning the restaurant. I wanted to have tea. So I asked him, “Saravana, if you are free, can we go for a coffee now?” He said “Sir, 5 minutes, I will eat and come.” Yes, he use to call me as ‘Sir’, eventhough I have said him a lot of times not to. I saw him eating the last two parotta and I could see him eating the parotta with chutney. I understood that all the other food items were sold out. Amidst this, he asked me “Sir, Do you want to eat parotta”. I said, “No Saravana, I had my food. Do you really want to eat that parotta? Come, let’s go out and eat” He said “No Sir, this is enough for me”. Before he could finish eating, he asked me thrice whether I want to eat or not. He was just wearing a shirt and a lungi. He finished his food. I told him “Go and put on a trousers and come. Let’s go for a coffee”. He said “Sir, if you don’t mind, shall I please come with this lungi?”. “No you can’t come with this lungi, just put on a trousers and come” “Sir, actually after standing whole day near the stove, I feel heat all over my body. That’s why. I hope you can understand my situation” I got shocked and pity from his reply. I could feel his pain. But still I demanded him to change it and come. He did changed his dress. “Come on Saravana, get on the bike” “Where are we going Sir?” “Just come with me” I took him to a CCD nearby. He said me, “Sir, I don’t want to have anything. I am full and this hotel looks costly” I ordered a cold coffee for him. He drank and said “Sir, this guy has cheated us I guess, there is no hotness in the tea. Shall we tell him to replace and bring it hot?” I smiled at his innocence and told him “It is the way it is supposed to be. Drink it” I asked him, “Tell about you Saravana, How did you come here, what’s your age, your family?” He said, “Sir, my age is 22 now. I am a 10th standard drop out. I flunked in Maths and Science. I re-attempted. However I failed again. My Parents are farmers and I have two elder sisters. When I was in tenth, one day, my father got drunk and he fell into the irrigation well. After that he couldn’t walk. He got paralyzed. I am the only bread-winner of the family. So I didn’t want to burden my family by asking money for studies. So I came to Bangalore through one of my relatives to work, since my family has debts. I did all the work like delivery boy, cleaner, and a lot more. I ended up working in a small hotel where they allowed me only to wash the vessels, take the waste plates and nothing else. I slowly learnt cooking. Then I joined as a cook in another hotel. I learnt to make idly, dosa, parotta, almost everything. Now in this hotel, I am getting 500 rs per day as salary” “Where do you stay Saravana?” “I don’t have any place to stay sir, I just sleep above those tables in the restaurant.” “What is your future plan Saravana?” “Sir, I somehow worked hard. Our family is having some debts. My two sisters got married. I was able to afford their marriage expenses by working day and night. But I still have some debts of around 7 lakhs. Once I clear that. I will go to my native and start my own hotel.” The things which I learnt from him was, He always kept smiling while telling about him. He never lowered his tone in a way that would create sympathy. Infact, he told me in such a way that I got inspired from his boldness and his determination to work for his family. “Saravana, have you ever cried because of your situation” “No Sir, I never cried. God gives us tough situations in our life, either in our first half or in our second half. I believe that my tough situations are now, and it will be over soon. I will lead a peaceful life once I go back to my native and start my hotel” I dropped him back in the restaurant. “Saravana, I am sorry, it is too late. You have to wake up early tomorrow right” “Sir, why do you say sorry for this? I am really very happy that you took your time to take me out. I am really happy to get some talking time with people like you sir. Come tomorrow to hotel sir, I will prepare your favourite biryani for you” I left with a heavy heart. I wanted to do something for him. I spoke to few people in my office and the management. And I got him a job in the food court. Where he will be working less hours and also he gets a place to sleep with double the salary. I am going to give this job as a gift to him on his birthday which comes on Oct 3rd. I just tried my level best to go to his peaceful life a little faster. This guy is really my inspiration. EDIT 1: I had two motives while writing this answer. 1. To inspire you in facing your life – from the life of Saravana, from how he is able to live his life amidst all the pain. 2. To inspire you in helping others – Few good souls messaged me in Quora and I could see few comments too saying “I really want to help others like you do” Yes. That was the only thing which I wanted. To spread positivity. Everyone has a helping tendency at some corner of their heart. But in this busy life, we don’t get time to do it. There is a dialogue from a Kamal Haasan movie “Anbe sivam” which means “Love is God”, where he says, “Aduthanvanga kasta padratha paathu uthavanumnu nenaikira manasu irukae, athu thaan sir kadavul” (Tamil) “The heart which longs to help others by seeing the people who are in pain, is God”(Translated) I would really be happy if you all take a five minutes of your time and talk to your milk man, or your cab driver or whoever. Talk. You could see the happiness in their faces. And I could also see some comments condemning me because of that “Lungi” issue. Brother, Do you really think I am such a kind of person to downgrade or get embarrassed? If that so, you don’t know about me brother!. Myself and Saravana, are like friends, like brothers. And I have the rights to say him, “Dai just go and change your dress and come”. He won’t mind anything. And I too don’t have any intentions of getting embarrassed or whatever.

At the end of my interview, the main interviewer told me something. He said that I'm clearly a smart guy but that I needed to give better attention to details. Is this a good thing? Was he just blunting the effect of his remark by prefacing it by saying that I was smart. I have no idea what to make of this.
