My take to Set 39..

59. (c) A & D
60. (a) A & C
Hi Guys,

I have a doubt with Set 39:

In question 59, the first sentence was: "Ren Descartes had a short working life and it begin late"

Now I know that the correct sentence is with 'began' in it but my doubt is, won't it be 'had began'? Please explain.

See, simple past (began here) refers to an event that has been finished in the past.
But, using past perfect implies there's another event that has occurred.

So, in the sentence, there's no event that occurred previous to what follows (as in "it began late"). Hence, the usage of simple past tense.

Reference - What is the difference between a past tense a past perfect tense

P.S. - Hope this helps !!

Niggle means "spending too much time on petty and trivial things" which creates annoyance, discomfort and anxiety both to the creator of such situation and to the others.
My Take
(E)that the North American Indians developed advanced full-year calendars based

"Have developed" means the activity has just completed. But, it is mentioend in the first sentence as "A calendar stick carved centuries ago" so it will be "developed" instead of "have developed". Moreover, instead of "basing them", it should be "based".
